Thank you for watching....Nusantara, Malaysia, and Indonesia were my most requested topic. Hope you enjoy this video....let me know what you think....things you like didn't like, or what you think I can do to improve-Thanks Epimetheus :) Corrections: At eight mins 30 sec into the video I make the mistake of saying Malaysia when it was Indonesia. I had the correct thing written down and said the wrong country for some reason...so sorry :( At one mins 44 secs I meant to say East coast instead of West Additions: Before the Aceh sultanate there was Samudera Pasai sultanate on the northern tip of Sumatra that converted to Islam in 1267 believed to be the first to do so in the archipelago

There's not a lot of info in Indonesian/Malaysian history because majority of it is just base on a few stone inscriptions and a fairytale Malay/Javanese chronicles that can hardly be taken seriously in academic works. There was no such thing as a unified Nusantara or Empire if you will because there is no evidence of any imperial expansion other than a few scant sources and comedian Malay/Javanese books to go by. Not very convincing.

And the important thing, I didnt say malay is Malaysia, and Sumatra is Indonesia. Because this history has existed before long long long long long ago before Indonesia&malaysia is born.

@kepala kentang its explained in the video. Basically this Kublai Khan dude in Mongol hear about this rich kingdom in island far south called Singasari and wanted to make it his own (at this time, mongol already invading and conquering Vietnam). The Mongol send an emissary to Java and ask for a tribute in exchange for "protection". But Singasari refuse the demand for tribute and cut the emissary's ear. The Khan furious and send a huge army from modern day Vietnam to punish Singasari. Meanwhile in Java, Singasari is in war with Kediri and Madura. Singasari send Raden Wijaya up north to fight againts Madura and win, but Kediri, attacking from south won againts Singasari, thus ended the Singasari kingdom. At this time, the mongol army who just recently landed in Java meet with Raden Wijaya. Raden Wijaya tell mongol that Singasari is no longer exist, but he made a promise to mongol, if the mongol helping him conquer Kediri, he'll send tribute to Mongol and become Mongol vassal state. At first Mongol army hesitated, they don't have enough food supply to fight far south, but raden Wijaya said he'll manage the supply line for the mongol, and the mongol believe it... That's the greatest mistake the mongol army made in Java, believing Raden Wijaya. After the mongol army done attacking and destroying kediri, Raden Wijaya ask the mongol army to visit Majapahit for celebration. En route to Majapahit, Raden Wijaya ambushed the now hungry, tired and unprepared mongol army. Without supply line, it's almost impossible for mongol to fight against Majapahit and end up fleeing back to Mongol. Soon, the mongol empire crumbling after the death of Kublai Khan and Majapahit become the geratest empire in Nusantara. End of story... Damn, i feel like writing a Game of Thrones story...

fun fact Majapahit means "bitter quince" in Indonesian legend says that once, Raden Wijaya resting on a place with many quince trees after defeating Mongols (it's not really a quince, but i found it quite comparable). He eats one of it and spit it back because it was bitter. but, as wise as a king was, he tells his followers that this bitter quince that he just spit out gives a reminder to them for previous bitter struggle they had (chased by Jayakatwang, evicted with all their wealth, fighting Mongols) and he'll naming this realm just that. he name the realm Wilwatikta (which in Sanskrit also means bitter quince). and the rest is history

Great video, very well-articulated about the history of Nusantara! I’m Indonesian and gotta admit, Indonesian and Malaysian histories are extremely complicated, with too many kingdoms and empires as well as principalities, until Dutch, British and Portuguese colonial rule, until the Japanese imperial invasion which led to the independence of all states in the archipelago. Btw, Bengkulu was first colonised by the British (EIC) until the Anglo Dutch treaty where the Brits and the Dutch switched Bengkulu and Melaka.

Nusantara was not a unified kingdom or even an Empire for that matter. It is base on a legend or fairytale story of Indonesian Kings claiming they conquered all of the region of Archipelago South East Asia but the remnants of such imperial expansionism cannot be seen anywhere. Majahapit or Srivijaya was a city-state that hold vast tributary territories but never really had any direct control over them. This is not what we call an Empire or kingdom.
@bornwithvision
@bornwithvision 6 жыл бұрын
Tee Touch I dont know if there is any source saying indonesian kings claiming such thing, the srivijaya kingdom territorial are known mostly from notes written by foreign kingdoms (chinese notes for the most part) and explorers who visited sumatera (chinese buddhist monk i-tsing), and as for invasion, there is an inscription in bangka island written about srivijaya sending army to conquer java
@supremekhmer6596
@supremekhmer6596 6 жыл бұрын
You have to take any written chronicles regardless foreign or local with a grain of salt because it can be just a legendary event or base on nationalism. This is why experts rather focus more on the physical archaeological point of view rather than rely on secondary sources like annals, manuscripts, and such that may or may not be true.

South East asian countries had very strong Indian religious, cultural, arts and linguistic influence for almost two thousand years. Be it Indonesia or Malaysia or Cambodia or Thailand/Vietnam and Laos, Philippines. Almost all south east asian language alphabets and scripts have been derived from Indian languages mainly Sanskrit and Pallawa (the latter related to Tamil). The Angkor group of temples in Cambodia got full Sanskrit inscriptions to this day. Most of the people in these countries know the Indian epics Ramayana & Mahabharata. A splendid performance of Ramayana is staged on a grand scale in Java, Indonesia right next to the great Hindu and Buddhist temples of Prambhanan and Borobudur. Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei have strangely converted to Islam under Arab trade influence though their every day businesses and people names are full of Sanskrit words mixed with arabic. Indonesia cannot and does not hide its religious and cultural past as its visible clearly all over the country in its temples, rituals and monuments but Malaysia tried hard to wipe out its past and by imposing hardline Islam and does not teach its own history to the people. I actually feel quite strange that countries which followed Hinduism and Buddhism for millenia - such a long time - suddenly coverted to Islam like that and don't want to associate themselves with the world renowned monuments their ancestors built.

Fun facts! 1. There was once a prophecy that the offspring of Ken Dedes (later married Ken Arok) would be the ruler of Java 2. Jogjakarta's sultan, Hamengkubuwono X, can trace his ancestry back until to the famous Ken Arok and Ken Dedes 3. Jogjakarta is the kingdom inside the country, according to the treaty between the kingdom and Indonesia 4. There's a prophecy called Jayabaya prophecy arguably written by a Kediri king in 1200s. He predicted that Java would be occupied by the white colored skin people for very a long time and later yellow colored skin people from the north would occupy Java for the lifetime of a corn-stalk. This is the reason of why Indonesian (especially Javanese) accepted Japan very quickly compared to other countries in SEA region when they came to Indonesia. Also thanks for the video, much appreciated!

siscon NEET instersting to know about the Jogja, is it until today being recognize as a Kingdom inside Indonesia?
@s0ul216
@s0ul216 6 жыл бұрын
@Epimetheus You're welcome! @snoiprocs16 Yup though we call it Daerah Istimewa Jogjakarta or "Special Region of Jogjakarta", it was kinda like a special treatment from Indonesia since they were willingly joining Indonesia back then. Also there were once more than one kingdom inside Indonesia, however they were coup d'état-d by the communists or the heir was dead after the wars so the kings gave their power and wealth to the government, the only remaining kingdom who have the power is Jogja for some reasons. Still the royal families which were coup d'état-d are still exist until now, but they just lose their power unlike Jogja. On the side note, the previous president SBY once tried to abolish the monarchy power in Jogja, however all the people there objected it. The proof is he held the election about whether to abolish the monarchy power in Jogja, and most of the voters voted "NO" to abolish the monarchy power. Afterward the laws reconfirm the power of monarchy power in Jogja. The power is still there and the government can't intervene with anything related to Jogja. I heard that they said that if Jogja were forced to become a normal province, then might as well they released themselves from Indonesia. You can say that Jogja people are royalists as hell, not that it's a bad thing though.

This must watch by the milenials. They have to understand that in the past almost (if not) all of South East Asian countries shared the same history together. We have the same ancestors and ruled by the same kingdoms. Colonisation separated us into Spanish, Portugese, British and Dutch colonialization territories. As an Indonesian, I sometimes feel sad seeing how our Indonesian millenials with lack of knowledge about history bullying the other SEA countries from claiming their ancestors greatness. Fact: Srivijaya and Majapahit aren't only Indonesia. But also Malaysia, Brunei (Borneo), Singapore (Tumasik), Champa (Thailand), Philippines,Cambodia. Even thought their kingdoms were centralized in Indonesia, but they're still the son or doughters of the same kings. The colonialisation gives an opportunity for Indonesia to get the biggest share of what the parents have left for their children.
