Correction at 1:45 the Johor Sultanate was based in the far South of the Malay peninsula and not Sumatra. Thank you for those that pointed this out :) I misread one of the reference maps ;( Contemporary Aceh Sultanate is shown in highlighted area NOTE 1 Some people think it was actually a Malay Tiger that the prince saw while hunting...because he was unfamiliar with both he was told it was a lion. Or maybe an extinct type of lion (like middle eastern lion) that has not been around for a long time. ....or he just made it up...and thought lion city sounds cool

The Sultanate of Johor was founded and governed from the Riau Islands (even further south of Singapore) after the initial collapse of Malacca, only returning to the peninsula after the Dutch arrived to counterbalance Portuguese influence. Aceh was one of their major rivals in this period. Also worthwhile mentioning that the earlier generations of Chinese immigrants predated Raffles, settling in both Old Temasek and especially Malacca (following Zheng He's tribute missions and the marriage of a Chinese princess to the Malacca Sultan).

Well, a tributary state ain't exactly China's land. Just as Huns extorting Eastern Roman Empire, doesn't mean that they were subjects to the Huns, or how Alaric deciding whose the Emperor of Rome meant it's Visigothic lands. But I guess that depends on how one defines sovereignty over these lands. Is it based on allegiance, influence, or the level of autonomy?

He didn't have much choice. The current Sultan of Johor was a descendant of the Temenggung in Johor. His ancestor caused a conflict with the actual Johor sultan and go as far as gaining reputation amongst europeans without the sultan's permission. That way, he was able to take Johor from the Sultan by making the British buy SIngapore from him or perish.

Md IrfanShah Bin Somsol back then, sultans had limited power (Islamic religion & Malay customary) the rest under Residency/Governor system. And yet there is a threat of the throne. That was the transfer of executive power from feudalism to British indirect rule and to the constitutional monarchy. In contrast; Singapore is republic, so royal matter is a obsolete. But people still keep telling about Sang Nila Utama, the story of Hang Nadim(Singapore under attack of the swordfish). Sultan of Singapore? Vanish

You know what would help India tremendously? Singapore is a secular nation, religion is not a big deal. India needs to "pull back" a bit on Hinduism if India is going to join the modern world. This is what I would recommend: 1. Teach sciences in schools. 2. Separate Temple from State. 3. Tear down unauthorized shrines. 4. Get the animals OFF the streets and into zoos or sanctuary's. 5. Fence off the Ganges river so it can flush itself out and become a clean river again. 6. Get the "holy frauds" off the streets and into useful labor and TAX them at a rate of 99% if they do want to carry on public shows.

Malay newcomers? Mate, they have been living there for centuries. A quick look into modern Malay genetics will reveal that they are descendants of Deutero-Malay and Proto-Malay people, the latter settling in coastal areas of the Malay Peninsula around 2500 years ago. Closer to 0 AD, there was a rise in Indianized kingdoms in maritime Southeast Asia but that doesn't mean there weren't people living there prior. The people living there had always spoken either Austroasiatic (Aslian) or Austronesian (Malay, Javanese, Buginese, Dayak, Iban etc) languages. Singapore has always been a part of the whole archipelago (it's old name was Pulau Ujong which means 'island at the end' in Malay) and migration has always happened between Austronesian groups (known for their seafaring prowess) in the region from the time they first settled up till colonial era, where colonial powers start enforcing borders that would define the division between countries in the region today.

danil not fair at all, Singapore had no natural resources, was totally empoverished, had an uneducated population, was full of corrupted people and was and is easy to invade as could barely defend its sovereignty, with all that it ended up being one the best countries. El Salvador, Haiti, The caribbean islands, the pacific islands the Comoros are all small countries and arent exactly the best examples of a country.
@ignacioandresadasme8553
@ignacioandresadasme8553 6 жыл бұрын
danil Yeah, but that doesnt correlate to the low corruption and the high HDI, nor security. The strategic position itself is important but not all, it only explains part of the incomes, but not how the country is managed. The Suez channel is placed in Egypt for example and it isnt a good example of a country. Singapore has a geostrategic position thats all, the same way other countries have massive reserves of natural resources or other advantages but only some are capable of such development
@ignacioandresadasme8553
@ignacioandresadasme8553 6 жыл бұрын
danil Once again a good geographic position doesnt equal good politics, Singapore has a privilged position but more importantly they managed the country wisely. The same way as Uruguay, a small country with no natural resources nor a perfect strategic position but good political decitions

The truth of the matter is the British who gave the name "Singa" (translated from lion) while "Pura" is an old Malay word meaning City. City of Lion. It became "pore" because the British couldnt pronounce "po" properly. "Po" is a Chinese word also means City. So the local Malays & Chinese complied with the British occupier with a translated name from the English's City of Lion to locally pronounced as Singapura (Malay) or Singa-po (similar to I-po that became Ipoh city in Perak & Mua-po or Ma-po that became Muar city in Johor) or by the British, Singapore. England has for ever so long known as the "Three Lions" and also becomes their emblem for coats of arms. Moreover, there has never been any single lion that roamed on the British Isles or Ireland isle for as long as the British people can remember or know. Perhaps lions may have lived in the British Isles during the Land Before Times. Who knows. Therefore, when the British occuppied n colonised Singapura from the Johor Sultanate as a gift of friendship as part of armitice between Dutch-Johor & British Johor, the British stamped their presence with a lion, imaginary as it can be, in their new colony Singapura. For heaven's sake, the fake that lions never live in jungle area like in the Malay Peninsula Rainforest, never live with tigers in natural habitat, and that Singapura is in fact an island will tell you that lion was never ever existed naturally in Singapura that made local people called it Singapura at that time. It was the British "Three Lions" who made up the Singapura's lion.

The Dutch and the Chinese also took sides in the conflict.. Siam watched cautiously at the sidelines looking to swoop in any spoils.. It was not until the Anglo-Dutch treaty was signed, that stability and trade returned which Singapore benefitted from. But by this time the original 3 factions are themselves depleted and were supplanted by the new colonial powers.

In the second half of the 14th century, the kingdom of Singapura grew wealthy. However, its success alarmed two regional powers at the time, Ayutthaya from the north and Majapahit from the south. As a result, the fortified capital of the kingdom was attacked by at least two foreign invasions before it was finally sacked by Majapahit in 1398 [12][13][14]. The fifth and last king Parameswara, fled to the west coast of the Malay Peninsula.

How did a lion get to be in south east asia?
@TheLeolee89
@TheLeolee89 6 жыл бұрын
It is most probably a Malayan tiger since Singapore is located at south of Peninsular Malaysia. The founder are from maritime southeast asia which mainly consist of island state/country and highly influenced by Hinduism. Big cat mainly exists on mainland. So, the founder are most probably never seen a big cat before and decided that the big cat he saw was a lion based on Hinduism records. Hinduism which is from India, have records/story of lion since India have lion which is called Asiatic Lion. Elephant and rhino are not the only African animal that have Asian cousins. Even if he seen a big cat before which is most probably a tiger, he might think it is cooler to said it is a lion since Hinduism is in trends during those time.

Before the dawn of Christianity or Islam it was Hinduism everywhere in Indian subcontinent even in South east Asia, then these invaders came and converted people. Indonesia once a Hindu country is now the world biggest Muslim nation. At the end if everybody is settling down to peace I've no problem with where your faith is invested in.

Historically, Malay Archipelago (where Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore and Malaysia located at) was located in sea silk road. Due to the strategic location, a lot of cultures from Arab, China and India basically mixed up there, no exception for religions. Also in Malay Archipelago cultures in general, the king was basically their ideal person (like heavenly mandate in East Asia, esp. Japan), so when the king converted to a certain religion, everyone would jump to that religion too. And why did the king convert to a certain religion? Probably because of politics, like for example making connections to merchants. And accidentally, the one who spread Islam in Malay Archipelago was not only Arabians, but also Chinese. You can search about Zheng He for more informations about this. tl;dr merchants were important figures in Malay Archipelago history.

man o man oh man are there soooo many things wrong with your argumentation. You just love to twist what i say and straw man dont ya? "Fun fact: the Quran makes reference to the word Israel by name 93 times and makes explicit reference to the 'Sons of Israel' to enter the holy land." -*Show me anything about it saying they are to have it for all eternity or a right of return even after they break their covenant with God, did you also manage to skip the parts where it says the true followers of moses are the muslims and that the covenant has been transferred to them? (probably)* I have studied religions thoroughly. You claim to be an atheist yet your hard determinism in defending isreal along with your name tells otherwise. My guess is your are jewish by ethnicity, but not truly by religion. "There's a difference between a Jewish terrorist and a person who committed a murder who happened to be Jewish" - *AGAIN YOU BUILDING A STRAW-MAN* *I never said that* and on top of it you are a pure hypocrite because you talk about me calling you an idiot and you do it right after. classic, cant even hold to his own ethics lol. first lets establish the definition of terrorism *ter·ror·ism* *the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.* *BOMBING A HOTEL FOR POLITICAL JEWISH REASON IS NOT TERRORISM TO YOU?* *YOU HAVE ISRAEL PROPAGANDA AIDS SO FAR UP YOUR ASS IF YOU TRULY BELIEVE THAT.* en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_David_Hotel_bombing AS for everything else. *i was right you are an idiot* you realize you just skewered yourself again right? "There's a difference between a Jewish terrorist and a person who committed a murder who happened to be Jewish" - Did i say random Jews that happened to murder or did i say *JEWISH TERRORIST ORGANIZATIONS?* again you twisting my words.

@wannaim6499
@wannaim6499 6 жыл бұрын
up to down Angkor Wat is actually the term from KHMER language which also has roots or derived from old SANSKRIT language. "Angkor" means Temple City in KHMER derived from the vernicular word "nokor" which has its root from the word "nagara", a SANSKRIT word. Meanwhile Wat is also a KHMER word which is also from a SANSKRIT word, "vata". It means "temple grounds" in KHMER, and "enclosure" in SANSKRIT. It is the same thing happened with the word of old Malay Kingdom named "Nagara Sri Darmaraja" which in Thai was called "Nakhon Si Thammarat", both are derived from SANSKRIT language but the spellings are different due to the language spoken by different types of people.
