I've been playing for 30 years now, I discovered the Les Paul 20 years ago and since then, it's all I play. Maybe I'm old- school, but the weight is what draws me to a certain guitar. I love the heavy ones. I bought the Vermillion Burst Slash model a few months ago, and I'm pretty impressed. Good luck on your guitar journey, just keep playing! ✌️🎸

That's a beautiful guitar! Fender necks can have a lot of variation depending on the model, and the scale length is longer than a Gibson/Epiphone. The 24.75" scale length on Epi's is easier for people with smaller hands. The fingerboard radius on Fenders varies, too. Vintage-spec Fenders have a 7.25" radius, which is great for chords, but can require higher action in order to make clean bends. The 9.50" radius is a good overall radius. Gibson/Epiphone usually have a 12" radius. Epiphones that I would recommend are Wilshire, Crestwood, Les Paul Special. and SG. The Wilshire, Coronet and Special have chunkier necks. If you really want to take a walk on the wild side, try out the Epiphone Firebird! One last thing: You might want to look at the Squier Strat-O-Sonic. It has the Epiphone scale length with the comfort of the Strat body. Have fun on your guitar journey!

Great video, Ash. Your channel has a fresh approach in that you are not playing the part of an "expert." Like so many of us, you are finding your way. This is your journey and you have invited us to join you through these videos. Thank you. I have an older Epiphone LP-100 that I would not part with for the world. I also have an Epiphone 1960 Les Paul reissued as a Joe Bonamassa signature model. This Epiphone is my baby. Seeing you go with an Epiphone is the main reason why I clicked on your video when it appeared as a recommendation. Like you, I always thought that I had to have Gibson. Not anymore.

The "plays like butter" thing may be because of the shorter scale. That lets the strings stay looser while it still hits the same notes with standard tuning.

This guitar is great, I have one and if you can get it for the right price, it's a no brainer. They done a great job with the pickups too. I got this guitar brand new, luckily for me so cheap that I changed out the pickups for the proper Seymour Duncan Slash ones, and honestly there is very little difference. Tuners stay in tune, my best playing LP style guitar for getting around the fingerboard smoothly. Not a shred guitar but you can play fast on it. Proper wiring with the actual right components inside, nothing cheaped out on with pots etc. All the epiphone hardware on the outside works just fine too and feels durable. If I was being picky the one I got doesn't have the nicest flame top I have ever seen, proper thickness maple top and nice binding but the flame wasn't great but that's a small gripe. Only other thing to say that can be a negative with some Epiphones is the set up or lack of any set up, but the one I got was so close to what I would set up my LP style guitars to play like anyway, that it could have easily got by without a set up, it was so close to being spot on as to be great right out the box. Only thing that did need done was the fretboard needed some conditioning but that's usual anyway. Killer guitar. The price when it came out a few years ago was too expensive only because for the asking price it should have had Gibson pickups leading to some bad reviews but it has came down in price now and on the used market even better. Slash needs his cut as it's his Epiphone signature model, so you have to factor that in. Some people just blindly criticised the fact it came with Epiphone Custom Pro Buckers and for the original price years ago this was a valid point, but reviewers just assume Epiphone Humbuckers must be crap. Ones in this guitar are anything but crap. Custom for a reason, finely tuned against the real pickups and they did a great job. If you want the Slash tone this guitar has it in spades but it plays great clean too. I play mostly clean and it rings acoustically even when it's not plugged in. More versatile than you would think, so don't be put off by the Slash in the name, it does clean, over driven and distorted very well. Might be hard pushed to do metal but you can get in the ball park, but if that's all you play then maybe higher output pickups would be for you. Thanks, Ashley for a great unbiased review, covered all the bases and a very polished video as well. Sorry for the long comment but hopefully enough info here along with the video for someone to make an informed decision. One last thing, I have back problems and play sitting down and this guitar, one I have anyway, is the most balanced LP style guitar I own. Doesn't do that trying to slide off your leg all the time nonsense other LP guitars tend to do. Hope this helps someone.

July 5, 2023 I went to a Guitar Center close by to me here at Pasadena Ca. I went with my 15 year old daughter and 13 year old son. We just go there to hang out and at the same time. I wasn’t planning to get a Les Paul but, when I see this on SALE for 499$ ( I got the Anaconda burst) I mean all the slash was marked 499$ I just went ahead and bought one😂 I also went there on that day to trade some stuff I got a few years ago some ukulele that I don’t used anymore and a few 20$ behringer pedals that ended up getting trade after a few hours. In the end after the trade and sale I just paid 200$👌😅. As of this moment it’s in a local mom and pops shop close by to me to get a full set up, polish the frets and fret ends and just make sure the pick up height were taken care off. Im not a guy who shred I just happened to appreciate guitars and love to sing and play. Peace.

Congratulations on your Slash AFD purchase. I only play Les Paul's now after years of trying/having many different guitars over the years looking for what I like. I have found that the Gibson Les Paul is most comfortable for me. I like the Slim Taper C neck profiles; the Slash models are just a little bit thick for me to like. I have an Epiphone Joe B Lazarus, which is a 59, but the neck profile is on the slimmer side of the Medium C neck profile where the Slash guitars are in the thicker side of the Medium C neck profile. My Lazarus is the thickest neck profile I have, and it does give me a good workout, which then when I switch to one of my other guitars, they just seem easier to play. Enoy your Slash AFD for a long time.

It is a beautiful guitar, and I love the new range of inspired by Gibson designs. Les Pauls have always been heavy guitars. I like the weight of the guitar, but I'm over 6 foot tall. They definitely are not good for your shoulders and neck if you're shorter than 5'7. Epiphones are never going to be loaded with the same pickups as it's Gibson equivalent, it makes no business sense. However, if you want Slash's pickups, Slash has been using Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro Humbuckers since 1986. BTW, they're not too expensive.

U are pretty good just a tip try letting the string skim the strings instead of like putting the pick so far between the strings try attacking the strings while holding the pick at an angle so it basically just skims the string so it's easier to get to next up or down string kind of like lightly chop the string if u know what I mean it improves speed and accuracy 100 percent that's what helped me u are good on chords though good job peace out have fun dnt b afraid it's all for fun who cares

Great video! I have the Slash Les Paul too but have many of the same issues with it as you... mainly the weight and comfort. I've been trying out lots of guitars recently. PRS SE Paul's guitar or PRS SE McCarty are lighter and give single coil and humbucker tones and have chunky necks, very similar to the Slash neck. PRS Paul's guitar in particular can give authentic 'strat' tones. Keep rockin' 🎸

The discomfort level of a slab body can really help you stop playing guitar. Without pointing to another brand specifically to be a jerk; theres options i find more livable with belly cuts, comfort cuts, that come with weight reductions and an LP body with set neck. Epiphone makes an okay guitar, same with Gibson, so if back pain and discomfort are desired features then this nails it. Pickups sounded pretty good, at worst they are "not disappointing," which is a thing/should be a thing people understand at this pricepoint. I am not entirely certain if painting the interior if your house entirely in "Haint Blue" affected the tone by virtue of the large mount of ghosts youve trapped inside it, however.
@AshleyOffset

Hahah this comment is awesome simply due to the paint color comment. When I bought this house I had a list of must change things and the paint in that room was one of them. Mostly because it was the color of my bedroom growing up and I'm sick to death of it. Needless to say, other renovations happened first. We are about to throw some hardwood floors in and FINALLY paint it. Maybe the vibes will change :) Anyway, thanks for the fun comment!

The original versions of these from 2009-2018 were better. From 2009 to around 2018-2019 Epiphone released a different Slash LP in a different color every couple years (the first being the Appetite For Destruction replica in 2009). That series had the Slash logo on the headstock instead of on back and they were built heavier in an attempt to emulate a 59 custom shop LP guitar and most importantly had Slash's actual pick ups that were also used in the Gibson model. I recommend getting one of those used on Ebay or Reverb than one of these newer versions.

I was surprised you had the treble control on your amp on full 10. Try it on about 2-3. Two things I agree with you on, first they're uncomfortable bodies, not carved like a Strat body. Second is the weight. That's the reason I've switched to SG's, you get the Les Paul sound without all the weight. Although one complaint I always hear is "they're too neck heavy." That's okay, I always hold on to my neck with my fretting hand no matter what I'm playing. 😁 I had Epiphone Explorers, (talk about a heavy shoulder breaking guitar), a Les Paul, a V, and an SG. Ended up trading all my Epiphones for a couple of cheap Gibsons. Now using a Les Paul studio and an SG special.

The shorter scale on a Les Paul makes it more slinky. That’s why bends and solos are easier.

Sweet guitar, and I understand the ergonomics issues, I find them less comfortable than my Gibson Les Paul Specials from 1999/2000 with comfort carve on the sharp back, even the little one they use makes a big difference. Telecaster slab bodies are like that too, but my Shijie telecasters have a comfort carve. If you want the best T or S type guitar you ever played for under $1,000, Shijie makes them better than Fender versions costing twice as much imho. Cheers!
@AshleyOffset
@AshleyOffset Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for this info! I actually didn't know that those Specials had a comfort carve. And I love a good T-style, so I will definitely have to look into the Shijie to see what they're all about.

Noticed these have been on a steep discount for awhile now at Sweetwater. But I hadn't seen anyone on KZbin reviewing one? Why are these selling soo poorly? Personally I don't like any of the Slash colors, but for $799 they're the same price as a LP custom.

I'm really not sure unless they oversaturated the market back when there was a boom. At the time, I thought $799 was pretty solid, but these current discounts are where it's at!

When it comes to the body shape being hard on yhe picking arm around the forearm, you will have a better time playing it standing or with the guitar body resting in the center of your lap. You should be playing with the guitar in that position anyway, its better for about a dozen reasons not the least of which is you will be able to transition to standing up easier. Set up a mirror in front of you when you want to practice playing in that position without looking at the fretboard. Take care!

Easier to bend on a Gibson style which is 24.75 scale. Strat is 25.5 scale. I like Gibson scale more but prefer Fender as a whole.
