I cannot express how much all of these words have been needed to put into a video. I have always given everything I could to others and neglected myself. Thank you for explaining how that’s not correct, how we must take care of ourself first in order to do most good sometimes. I have waited so long to hear that. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I would add you should not neglect any of yours normal desires in order to do something good for others.

I would like to add an even more effective way of helping people in need is participating in mutual aid instead of private charities, like Steven mentions most charities are ineffective and even corrupt but mutual aid is designed to circumvent most of these issues and is just generally a more transparent and direct process than giving money to an organization and hoping they use it well

Would you ever be interested in discussing philosophy, consciousness, and ancient spiritual esoteric teachings (e.g., alchemy / Qabalah / tarot / etc?) I’m a Freemason in Colorado and a few of us really enjoy your podcasts. I would love to pick your brain on a few topics. Anyway - thank you for your contributions and for everything you’ve done and will do!

Well as long as we use the same system or how we use the system, the problem will always be there. You can give away the extra material or money all you want but that just solves the symptoms and not the problem. And even if you do solve the problem, you will eventually make a different kind of problem for someone else. So what's the solution? Maybe by finding out what our nature intentions are and try to help as much people as possible because everyone will be saved is a lie. Like human beings for example. We need food, water, sheltey, health care, electricity, education and safety(physical and emotional).If we can make easy access to these most people will definitely be satisfied with their government or ruler. How? Definitely not capitalism. Not the way that's used anyway. Maybe remove the company has to increase profits, removing tips and get employees get paid in full. But whatever the solution is, it must be discussed by most in not all countries or something

There's no way for me to make that right in my head.. my time and money would definitely go to better use so a person can get clean drinking water than some vain luxury.. thats really what i should do, but i cant get myself to do it :( one day i might though *that Peter Singer idea really dogs me on occasion and makes me feel all Oscar Schindler sad :(

Imagine I give 10% of my salary to charity. Let's say you do the same. We all know this would be noble. Ok, we've now established that we are altruistic. Question is, could not the money be misused ... or wasted ... or stolen? Think of people constantly depending on handouts. Fact is, you'd have to ask yourself, would this be the best way to help the poor? Christine Martin would say no. What I'm saying is that maybe, just maybe there's a better way. What if each person got educated, worked, lived frugally, and helped family members and a friend? Maybe poverty could be reduced. Consider this: only have children if you can afford them. Me personally, I think this would be grand. This is the point when you might be thinking, is she that selfish? No. My point is charity begins at home. Hope you liked the comment ... and thanks for listening.
@samismith8752 Жыл бұрын
You're missing the entire point. Effective altruism prioritizes a small number of organizations who verifiably put the money they have at their disposal to good use -- with "receipts," so to speak. It is through no fault of their own that hundreds of millions of children are born into circumstances where they are unlikely to make it to age 18. Your "better way" is just an easily refuted and cliched talking point to deflect personal responsibility and excuse your own selfishness. "Charity begins at home" is something only a privileged person can say with a straight face, and typically those who say it have absolutely zero interest in real, effective charity, and hold low to zero empathy for others.

Feels like Singer would justify capitalism or even outright imperialism for the sake of accumulating the most wealth for maximum helping power lol

Yeah - it seems Singers ideas could be used to justify some pretty questionable ideas out there. Like "benevolent dictatorship". That's the trouble with philosophy sometimes. It can be unintentionally weaponized.

Yeah I don't think I've heard anything come out of this guy's mouth that didn't make me want to hit him. He's quite awful. It's fascinating how this guy could become such a respected philosopher.
