Maddow once came to a hotel I was working at for dinner back in...I wanna say, 2016. We had a Michelin starred restaurant that drew a lot of celebs but she walked up alone to ask if it was "okay for her to visit our restaurant. I walked her over to the restaurant entrance I didn't tell her that back in the Air America days I called into her "Ask Dr Maddow" segment to clarify what a person who practices judo was called and she was as affable and polite on the phone as she was in person. In hospitality we're supposed to pretend we don't know who famous people are so it's more like I couldn't tell her but If they gave out Michelin stars for genuineness and intelligence, she'd have at least two! It's judoka, by the way. The Japanese suffix "ka" is like "ist" in English but no one says "judoist"! You'll hear "judo player" more than "judoka" but both are okay.

Randi Rhodes and Rachel Maddow did spectacular work on Air America in 2004. The coming fascist government is a four alarm fire for minorities, people of color and for political foes of Donald Trump. Ethnic cleansing in America is very real and very possible where the military, also the possible use of Russian troops on loan, and ICE will start picking up illegals, legals, and people of color off the streets and put them into detention camps. Americans need to prepare for their own personal exit strategy in the event this election goes sideways. This podcast is a huge public service. Thanks Rachel and Bradley for coming on the show.

I was born in 1957 and my parents were Roosevelt “New Deal” democrats to when they passed away a few years ago. They hated Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan, and both Bushes. I understand, my parents(born in 1947) used to vote across the spectrum, but were mainly Democrats(as were my grandparents, born in 1905,1909, 1918 & 1920). My Dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in early 2016 and he was so, so disgusted by a chance of a Trump presidency. As far as this video goes, I majored in American Studies in college, and the US was in an isolationist period from the end of WWI until well into the mid 20th century. We turned war refugees away. That's just shameful and something that shouldn't have happened. I just started watching(I'm at 4:37 on the video), because it is SO IMPORTANT to look back and learn from our mistakes! Have a good week!

The New Deal was more than 4 decades of prosperity for the economy and for all Americans. Cutting Taxes for wealthy people to trickle down to the rest of us was sold to Americans by an actor and a Press whose ownership benefited from those cuts - poor people don't own media. Not only have most of those Cuts not been restored to New Deal settings but the 43 and 45 Presidents cut more of the same. Even if this video were not about fascism, the oppression of the working class bearing the Taxation burden of infrastructure, debt and the world's most expensive military is itself, extremely oppressive.

@markhamstra1083

Fascism does not always include a racist component. It’s true that fascists argue for and seek to exploit an Us vs. Them split that will give them power as the protectors and leaders of Us, but race is only one of the ways to define the plane of cleavage between Us and Them. In fact, the division in Italian Fascism, for example, was defined more in romantic cultural terms as to who were the heirs of the Roman Empire and the like than it was in racial terms. Fixating on racism as a necessary, defining component of fascism can produce a blind spot that will let fascists exploiting other divisions go unrecognized.

The most frustrating thing of all this is that interest in History (ours, in particular) is pretty much crushed at an early age, when kids are learning the "Hurray For The USA" version of history, which tends to be extremely boring. I don't think I learned any real History until I began taking college level courses -and how many people take history courses, or even read history, after they've completed the obligatory high school requirements?

So interesting and horrifying to see a replay of some of those same ideologies and methods of widespread propaganda in the US at this moment. There are differences, but the same ploy and objective. Real History needs to be taught. I found that Howard Zinn's "Peoples History of the United States" explained so much that did not make sense when I graduated High School in 1967. I discovered Howard Zinn years later, and puzzle pieces fell into place. You and Rachel Maddow are uncovering yet more, and it is urgently needed at this time. God speed. The parallels to 1930 and 2024 are stark. Bonhoeffer is a great resource to see the parallels also. Don't bother to read Erick Metaxis's "Bonhoeffer." His biograpical book is slanted towards the Christian Right Dominionist persoective. The mixture of the occult with Christianity found in many Evangelical Churches is disturbing. I have witnessed it myself and learned that Hitler combined occult beliefs with mainstream Christianity in his power grab. The occult promises its adherants power, as does Dominionism. The two go hand in hand because the real God they worship is power, wealth, and control. The Christ of the Beautitudes is nowhere to be found in this mindset. I look forward to your next episode. Thank you for being a truth telling historian. It is vitally important work.

The laughing reporter is drunk with TDS, religion is usually a shield, a hiding place for cowardly butchers in high offices. This shouldn't be confused with ordinary believers, it's almost always the leaders who cause war, lies about war, and they hide behind the beliefs of the people they claim to represent. The churches did this centuries ago and it was effective. Muslim leaders, Christian leaders and today it's the Zionist leaders.

Amazing work. Rachel is extremely well versed on these topics and was an amazing choice to bring on. I worry very much about the resurgence of these ideals dressed up in the MAGA movement today. Its very important people hear this stuff and recognize truth about our society and the myth that America couldn't lose its way. People who don't appreciate or study history are very susceptible to being coerced into modern fascist movements without even realizing what it is they are supporting. The recent CPAC where Jack Posobiec happily proclaims the "end of democracy" and says they will "replace it with this" and then raises his fist was chilling. He poceeded to joke about not accomplishing it on Jan. 6th. Thats a stark reminder to all of us that we are not far removed from the days and figures you spoke about on this podcast. I look forward to watching the rest of your work. The German American Bund has always fascinated me so im anxious to see what you have put together on that as well. Keep up the good fight! 💪

I was born in 1932 and actually lived through Nazism in Germany. Very clearly, there is far too much that reminds me of that time, and it's nastiness, in today's USA. Everything around Trump and his followers stinks of Hitler and his followers. Of course, there are also other countries where this is true. I, as a twelve year old teenager, had real personal experience with the Secret Police and the Hitler Youth Leadership, being reported and investigated as an enemy of the State. O.K., I was fortunate in that nothing extremely came out of it for me or my parents. Also, I saw enough other happenings, such as Reichskristallnacht, to become a lifetime adversary of any and all Nazis and their supporters.

Thank you both so much for bringing this history into the light. A couple of years ago I was reading old "The Saint" stories from the 30s & 40s, in which the hero was often depicted battling American Nazis. I was sure that they had really existed, so I went searching for history of the movement in my usual online places, such as Wikipedia. Not a word. Spurlos versenkt, all of them. So I was so happy, Rachel, when "Ultra" came out. I am sure you are right, that the history was effectively erased from the American narrative because it was too uncomfortable and clashed with the story -- especially when Gen. Eisenhower became president -- of How America Won the War. We can see the same thing happening now, as right-wing movements attempt to excise knowledge of the history of slavery from the schools.

I'm so glad I found this. I think it's important at the top to include a few bullets on where fascism can lead. If I was new to the topic, I could hear, here are some fascists and here are some heroes, without first being informed about the true nature of fascism. We can't assume everyone hears the word and shudders; many are convinced they need a strong leader who makes empty promises of economic prosperity for them by 1) dehumanizing and exporting "deplorables" who compete for their jobs and resources (myth) 2) dropping the department of education and its budget to save money and give the states freedom (because uninformed citizenry is less likely to rise up), 3) fire career civil servants so those jobs can be filled by appointment rather than on merit (which only becomes a powerful tool of the strong man .) It can't be overstated or stated too often.

The Nazis carefully studied the race laws of the USA when setting up their own racial laws. Interestingly, in some cases, the Nazis did not go as far as some white supremacist laws in the USA. For instance, they didn't adopt the "one drop" (of blood) rule for deciding who was an African American, or in the Nazis' case, who was a Jew. For the Nazis, you had to have three Jewish grandparents to be labeled a Jew.

They particularly studied how Native Americans were treated & genocided, apparently. They supposedly drew a lot of ideas from our treatment of Indigenous Peoples, plus our Jim Crow laws as well. Despite the "stringent" rules on who was a Jew in the Nazi mind, they still chose to commit genocide against an entire culture. They went after many other groups, too, such as the Romany (the Gypsies), the handicapped, Jehovah's Witnesses & LGBTQA people, along with political groups they felt were a threat to their rule.

Loving this discussion and kudos to Rachel Maddow for her work in this area. In my opinion the reason this history is not taught comes back to the disconnection between Economics and Politics. This nation, since its inception, has wrapped itself in the idea that “Capitalism” is its primary Economic System and Democracy, at least a democratic republic, is the primary political philosophy. We need to disabuse ourselves of the idea that economics and politics are two separate entities. The two are like conjoined twins that share vital organs and as a result cannot be separated. Ford was one of the, at least according to the History Channel, men who built America. That series conflates economics and politics and perpetuates the myth that wealthy people built the nation. They modified the process and were themselves fascist, it just was not an available term at the time. Mussolini said, ‘when you cannot see daylight between government and corporations, you have fascism.’ That held true in Spain, Germany and Italy and is actually one of the reasons Oscar Schindler, Nazi businessman who grew a conscience, could do what he did. WE need to recognize that today there is no daylight between corporations (wealthy and powerful people) and government. We all know members of both branches of congress spend most of their time raising money to get reelected and those acquired funds maintain a system that damages the average American. Yet we do nothing to stop it.

_" Mussolini said, ‘when you cannot see daylight between government and corporations, you have fascism.’"_ Assuming he even said such a thing, Mussolini never referred to businesses, since that is not what the "Corporations" / Corporatism meant in Italy at all. Fascism was the complete opposite of what America for example is today. Fascism was a socialist ideology based on National Syndicalism.

As a retired History teacher, we need to flood the airwaves, and Tic Tok (shutter) with the true history of the US. The youngest voting generation is for the most part liberal, as most young voters are, because they are still idealistic and not jaded yet. But, the vast majority are completely blind to historical facts about the past century. It is therefore put back upon us the older generations to educate our children. We need to cut through the misinformation and raise competent voters. Blue wave for all eternity!

As a history teacher you probably meant to say that they are progressives (as opposed to conservatives), since I highly doubt they have a clue who John Locke was nor do they believe in a limited government. Or do they? You tell us. If they do, then your country may still have hope... but a "blue wave" ain't it.

If I'm not mistaken, Henry Ford was awarded the highest civilian award from Adolf Hitler himself. My father fought against the fascists / Nazis in Europe and all the while there were those in our government who sided with them. And also as a sidenote - my mother was from Northern Spain, a Basque, and growing up she knew all too well about Franco.

In response to driving a Ford Rachel mentioned she drives: from the age of 14 on, I refused to drive a Ford (I drove at that age for a produce business). I found them clunky and junky to drive. Of course that was in the 60s, I haven’t sampled any since. I lived next to American Motors but didn’t like their cars either. Family members worked for these car companies including Ford. Of course we were forced as kids by the school system to go to the Henry Ford museum every year. I played hooky after the first year. I was born in Dearborn and grew up in Detroit. I found the information of everything about Henry Ford gave me a disgusted feeling. My family was virtually apolitical as was the church we attended (if you can imagine the latter!). The extent of Ford’s Nazi ties brings all of this full circle for me. When I was 11 I didn’t have first hand experience of the persecution of Jews but I literally saw how those who were poor were beaten and attacked by mostly white police officers. What really bothered me at that age was the politicization of a war on “coloreds”. I could see how newspapers and many in government were speaking against non whites. I pointed out how newspapers and TV news would not show poor white people being arrested for looting, only people of color. And this was how the legal system and the government justified using the term “race riots”. Of course the adults around me were so uninvolved they basically just stared at me when I expressed outrage. I mean after all I was only 11, what does a kid know? I knew of course that Henry Ford spewed hatred, including against Jews however I didn’t know at that age he was on the cutting edge of being the top influencer of anti-semitism in the English speaking world. No wonder everything about him and his factories, cars, and the Ford museum made me sick to my stomach. Thank you to my 11 year old self for being both honest and astute. ❤

Thank you for putting together this podcast. Important stuff to pay attention to, especially with the fascistic movements currently making waves in our day-to-day politics. You guys are giving me a nice historical perspective that I previously lacked, even though I've heard of some of these folks (particularly Father Coughlin). You're very correct in calling this stuff "deeply uncomfortable history". So, so true. We just don't want to admit our connections to far-right fascist ideology. It's like we can't face it, for some reason, probably because this stuff is so obviously antithetical to our oft-stated "American values". Racism & generalized bigotry, especially the anti-trans "moral panic" going on right now is a very fascist-oriented slant that I've been paying attention to in our politics for the last several years, mostly because I happen to be the targeted demographic that this bigotry attacks. Being a transman in a deeply Evangelical, right-leaning (Trumper) town isn't a walk in the park. I'm lucky in that I've actually experienced only a little discrimination (being in SoCal helps with that privilege), but I can feel the tension when someone finds out that I'm an atheist/anti-theist, gay, asexual transman around here (hey, some people ask--you'd be surprised at the pushy, personal questions I get on occasion). They often try to preach at me, or tell me that they should "rebuke" me (with attendant religious silliness that I have to let them know I couldn't give a rat's ass about) for merely existing. I just laugh & roll my eyes at them. The ones that seem less judgmental &/or curious, I actually try to educate them in as gentle a way as I can--I'm not very good at it, being opinionated & occasionally angry about their views (I really am fed up with the lies people keep telling about trans people in the press & in politics--so many easily debunked ideas, & these morons insist upon still believing them). Hard for me to keep things level when the person I'm engaging with carries painfully bigoted ideas about me & people like me. Sometimes, I have to let them go on their way & not try to change their views at all. It's sometimes too painful, or fosters too loud of an argument, which I actually dislike, despite my willingness to argue my side. Christian Nationalism is extremely dangerous, we should be paying more attention to it, & finding ways to counteract their garbage ideology. Too many current politicians & others on the right are following this junk view (or views adjacent to it), trying to make laws based on the Buybull & their bigoted ideas. I'm not down with that nonsense, & it's something I will fight in any way I can. Thanks for this podcast. You have a new subscriber!

The relevant context of the influence of the USSR as a menacing presence to US political and economic power power and the coziness of elite US capital and fascism are rather large elephants in the room in any discussion of the USA in the 20s and 30s. There was a crisis of capitalism from '29 on that FDR tried to address much to the consternation of business leaders who plotted his demise and found fascism a useful tool in those plans. Those liberal business leaders who would form the John Birch society and later fuel Kochism would not have found motivation were it not for their fear and hatred of the Left, a real Left that America had in the 1880s into the 30s when it was crushed. That connection between capitalism and fascism is uncomfortable for Americans. The threat of socialist ideas coupled with capitalism''s recurring collapses provide the environment where fascism exists. We are incidentally in the midst of such a collapse and have been since 2009. When inflation is factored in, working people in the USA are worse off today than they were in the 30s. Our fascist propaganda networks fail to inform us of this fact. I am hopeful you will discuss fascism's triumph in America, its connection to powerful corporate forces because it is thriving here and no longer needs to conceal its ugly face

I have always said the one thing politicians of today are missing is a HISTORICAL background and I will keep saying it. History is IMPORTANT. One of my favorite quotes is from Pliny. I can’t remember the exact quote but gist of it says that those who studies history are sick in the mind because what they study is always repeated. They are never learning from what they study. The events in history are repeated. Why? Why are they repeated? Because we have people in power who don’t know history. How many times have we been in situations where it felt like, “here we go again.” It’s getting old which makes it a problem in learning about history. History teachers are too interested in having students know about dates when they should be interested in knowing the concept, why the event happened, and how is it important. I had a history professor who made the civil war into a daytime soap opera. It was THE best way to learn about history. He made it interesting and hilarious. I didn’t want the class to end. I would have loved a class taught by Rachel Maddow. That would be AWESOME! Politicians need to know history. It’s sad to hear them misquote or misinterpret history. These are the people we elect to represent us and they are looking like huge failures and embarrassing ourselves. To the entire world we look incompetent. To our enemies, we look foolish, stupid, and weak. I wonder how long will the States survive. Our government was based off of Rome and Rome fell. The States has done EXACTLY what Rome did. Rome spread itself out and made itself thin and easy to break. Democracy is falling apart. Can it be saved?

@@Historia.Magistra.Vitae. Then it would seem to be obvious that a republic which is founded upon democratic representation is obligated to ensure that its citizens are somewhat educated, have access to unbiased information, and possibly pass a basic “civics” test as a requirement for voter registration (and I’m certainly not referring to the sort of “literacy test” used in the Jim Crow south the purpose of which was to exclude black people from voting eligibility). Given that the US has gutted its secondary education system, no longer teaches much (if anything) about its constitutional government, is adding another “R” (religion) to the curriculum, and that most of our citizens get their “news” from agenda-driven online propaganda sources, I fear that the days of our democratic republic are numbered. Since the only alternatives to democracy are either a monarchy or an authoritarian dictatorship, I guess we are facing dark times ahead.

To add to the history of Henry Ford, when President Roosevelt assigned Auto Executive William Knutson to approach the Titans Who Built America of whom Roosevelt vilified beginning with becoming President, when he could see that war with Germany was looming, William chose to approach Edsel Ford first. Edsel was the one who created Ford Aviation because he felt Edsel would be the easiest to get on board with war manufacturing and if he got board the others like Henry Ford, Pierre Dupont, Walter Chrysler, William Boeing and J.P Morgan may follow suit. Edsel was ready to get back into aircraft manufacturing, however Henry told Edsel, "You can tell Roosevelt that Ford builds cars and if he wants airplanes he can go to an airplane maker. We are not going to war with Germany." So William Knutson went to Pierre Dupont next who ran General Motors. Pierre was labeled "The Merchant of Death" by the Roosevelt Administration because he made profit off of the ammunition he manufactured for the US 🇺🇸 in WW I. Obviously Pierre said no. William was getting no ware fast. Then when Pearl Harbor was attacked, Henry Ford did an about face and built Willow Run, the largest aircraft factory in the world. They built the B24 Bombers faster than any other manufacturer in the world. Ford also built the Jeeps for the US Army. Matter of fact Enzo Ferrari's first encounter with Ford Motor Company was when his car factory was bombed by a Ford built B24 Bomber. It's been said without Ford's B24 Bombers we would have lost WWII. All of the other Titans came on board too when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Pierre Dupont began manufacturing ammunition at General Motors. Chrysler built the first US 🇺🇸 tanks, Henry Keizer began building liberty ships for the US 🇺🇸 Navy. JP Morgan met once a week with President Roosevelt in the White House and handled the financing of the war. William Boeing built the B29 Bombers of which one delivered the two Atomic Bombs to Japan.
