Episode 17. Mi-28N. Natural-born hunter

The Mi-28N Night Hunter is a Russian new-generation strike helicopter. It’s called the Night Hunter for a reason: this aircraft operates at day and night in any weather conditions. Its task is to destroy heavy armor on the ground, air targets, and enemy personnel.
One such helicopter is worth a whole squadron of previous generation helicopters. It can carry 16 guided missiles and a tank cannon, fly with one working engine and pierced rotor blades.
We’ll show how they make the armor for protection of the Night Hunter’s cockpit, which can withstand a barrage from the American 20mm Vulcan machine gun. The viewers of this episode of Combat Approved will find out what this helicopter is capable of and why the NATO call the Mi-28N Havoc.

I really love Helicopter gunships American and Russian ones too. They have a menacing look about them and I wouldn't want to be the one they are after. May personal favorite is MI 24 gunship because is spacious. I first found out about it from a report on Neal Ellis who is ex military turned mercenary in Africa who pilots one of these and keeps rebels at bay. Really interesting and really shows the capability of one of these.

The looks of the Apache and the Mi-28 are indeed a menace. Usually, despite the Russians prioritising pragmatism in their aircraft design, these turn out to be quite pleasing to the eye. In case of the Mi-28 it seems they were trying to beat the Apache not only in performance but especially in ugliness. Mission accomplished.

The V-22 has a vastly different role from any attack helicopter. It's very competitive against the AH-64 and imo beats the AH-1 but it can't be compared to the V-22. As well as that there are differing doctrines and requirements from each country

It has more to do with overburdening a project with too many mission profiles. Russians seem to have taken a specialist system approach rather than a polyvalent "has to do everything and not prevail in one area" approach. Tomcat is right. The Osprey has another mission. It is a multipurpose assault hybrid-helicopter, from troop carrier, logistical support and infantry support light armored vehicle transport. From amphibious operations point of view a fine aircraft. It seems now that only dedicated systems can provide enough edge for specific mission types. Russian advantage is very circumstantial as many projects were delayed for twenty years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, maintaining development at conceptual stages long enough to iron out most of the kinks. The fact that there is a procurement need across the board has been favorable to bringing all these new concepts to fruition. The key to Russian success is their procurement process. Let's not forget all the available terrain for continuous training and large scale exercises.

The Havoc is a bad ass helicopters but they number in the dozens of aircraft while the Apache AH64 numbers in the thousands. Hundreds of Apaches can just tear into the dozens of havocs it would be a blood bath. Of course I pray that one day the USA and Russian Federation can get over our differences and become allies and best of friends. I myself wish we were friends now. What we can do together in space we can do on the surface.

historically, and I'm saying it as a former Soviet, the soviet prototypes vastly outperformed production models. what you see here is a prototype piloted by a very well trained team. Anything NATO soldiers will encounter will most likely far inferior to this.

Those of you who are ignorant. The Apache longbow came out years ago. They finally took the radars off and will only put them on if needed. When you are fighting terrorist with no tanks or advanced equipment the longbow radar is just drag you don’t need. But can be put on at any time. Also the apaches from the start fly by their self. You can take your hands off at any time. It’s not made to be a pilots helicopter. It’s made to be a gun platform. Also you can see major flaws on this where you could shoot it down. The apache ah-64E is combat proven to be survivable. You should see what happened on the start of the Iraq war we had a big incident where every rotor blade had multiple holes in them from large 20mm guns and they kept flying with no Transmission fluid. The impressive thing it took very little time to repair them and have them combat ready again. Combat proven is far more important than fantasy. Which fantasy is okay but you never really know until it’s been shot to shit.
