I watched The Ready Room just before watching this video and of course after seeing Episode 2 first. The level of care in creating District 6 and the Shrike set is just a phenomenal eye to detail. Seeing Wil meet his "half-brother" was something special too. Ed seems like a great person to be in the cast.

Repulsor beam is something that Wesley Crusher used in "The Naked Now". He reversed the polarity of the Enterprise-D's tractor beam to push the E against another ship's hull to save the larger ship from being hit by a piece of stellar debris.

@@atlanta2076 Terry is most definitely a real one when it comes to being a Star Trek fan. It's so much fun looking up interviews with him and see how casually he name drops episodes and moments from the show. Really like the actor playing Jordi’s daughter and is a pretty great character, reminds me so much of Sulu’s daughter. Capt. Shaw is a really great character too, how he gets into it after Picard tells him that’s his son. Wow! He definitely has a back story I hope they get into or at least telling us about. But the guy playing Jean luc Jr, is really fantastic and I’m pretty sure he’s going to give us some great episodes, really great actor in my opinion from what I’ve seen so far. Wesley tossed the Tsiolkovsky in "The Naked Now" towards a stellar fragment, using a repulsive tractor beam. In this episode, everyone looks shocked and amazed that this is possible, but he did it, what, 40 years prior to this time? I mean, they were all space-drunk when Wesley did it, but computer logs would show how he did it, so it can't be unknown technology.

Enjoyable setup episode. I'm guessing next week we're in for some cat and mouse, nebula "submarine" warfare. Quite liked the wordless exchange between Dr. Crusher and Picard. But I wouldn't be a Star Trek fan without nitpicking. In the previous episode, Cpt Shaw correctly reminds Adm Picard he's not on the active list, and is therefore in no position to give orders. And yet in this episode, when Picard countermands Shaw's orders, the crew obey without so much as a glance at their CO, and Shaw's response ("Why did you do that?") makes it seem like he can't do anything about it. Picard himself in "Pegasus" tells Adm Pressman to go kick rocks when he attempts to take command, and obviously Pressman was on the active list and in command of the mission (but not the ship). In that case, Picard was, in theory, within his rights to not hazard the ship, but understood it was debatable (inviting Pressman to, erm, press charges). Shaw could have easily done the same - at least until Picard explained himself.

Interesting point in that if Picard is on the retired list he shouldn't be able to take command without some authorisation from Starfleet. However, in a crisis and given that Picard is a 4 or 5 star Admiral (albeit on the retired list) it would take a very sure of themselves Captain to not follow orders if Picard choose to issue them. Imagine the reaction of the Admiralty at Starfleet if during a subsequent review a Captain didn't achieve a satisfactory outcome to a crisis (and turning a Federation citizen over to some Bounty Hunters would never be considered to be satisfactory) and it was shown that a Captain had completely ignored Picards (and Riker's protestations). So Shaw was almost in an impossible situation and had to come round.

Returning to the issue of the darkness of interior locations, I watched again eps 1 & 2 of Picard season 3 and noticed a significant change to the visuals in ep 2. I could clearly see the bridges of the Eleos, Titan-A and Shrick. Impressed by these visuals and some facial expressions of the main characters were better. Also the scenes with Raffi and Ferengi were much better because I could see much more detail in the 'office' of the Ferengi. Arrival of Worf, no longer a quick moving shadow figure or silhouette. I watched ep 2 again after reading Terry Matalas' tweet that Paramount was aware there was an issue in some countries with contrast and over saturation. Whatever the problem, the difference in ep2 between yesterday and today, was like night and day 🙂. Btw I use Amazon Prime.

I’ll say this - it’s better (so far) than anything in Season 1 or 2. I would think (hope?) if society improves itself by the 25th century that 21st century vulgarity/profanity would prob not survive in an improved, enlightened society. It just seems forced and out of place like a writer is checking a box off in script design. The scene on the Titan bridge between Gates and Sir Patrick was INTOXICATING and very well done. Big TNG feel there. And Worf - oh man ! 💪🏻

I'm just excited for Matalas' next sci fi, whatever it is, in the meantime. And to those who haven't checked out SyFy's *12 Monkeys The Series*, what are you waiting for? Find it and watch it. The episode appeared to be paced too slowly, to pad the season out to ten weeks. On the other hand, I agree that there were some great moments. Two mysteries: Why did Worf insist Raffi disengage; what's with the DNA displays in the end credits?

Deffinatley the best season of Picard so far. Excellent acting and SFX, however the dark scenes and camera shaking was allmost nauseating in this episode and I could not focus on the screen to watch it ecpecially during the bridge scenes. I think camera shakes are fine to accentuate battle damage but not much else.

the idea of a son would be more believable if Crusher and Picard had had any chemistry between them - Picard had more chemistry with “his wife” that turned out to be only in his mind then he ever did with Beverly who was with him on the Enterprise - and then there was the Metamorph 😉

The books had this character along time ago. Guess writers chose to follow suit. I don’t find Beverly not telling Picard the second she knew she was pregnant though. Beverly wouldn't of kept his child from him and she definitely wouldn't of done that to Jack.

.... agreed .... maybe the embryo wasn't viable and she had to resort to genetic engineering to save it? A big no no in the Federation. There has to be a really impressive explanation ... though even in ep 1, I got the vibe Jean-Luc wasn't completely surprised....??
@Dreamprism

I think the moment between Jean-Luc and Beverly was kind of weak, actually. How is Beverly showing up and staring at Jean-Luc supposed to confirm to Jean-Luc that Jack is his son. It could've just been a stare after not seeing him for a very long time. Also, Picard seemingly giving the orders on the ship now seems incongruent with Shaw talking about Picard being retired and saying he [Shaw] has control over his ship in ep1. I did enjoy the episode though.

Terry, the only Issue I have with this episode is they should be using Quantum Torpedoes at this point and they should be able to fire them faster than the Enterprise 1701, otherwise I enjoyed this episode very much and the music is awesome specially the closing credits, there seemed to have a feel of Star Trek Insurrection with this episode specially with the transport inhibitors and Worf having aggressive tendencies. cant believe I have to wait a week for the next episode.

What was up with the contrast in this episode? Even the TNG blue credits look cyan - visible at 0:24 in this review. The LCARS outro is also completely overblown, but obviously the issue is present throughout the entire episode, not just during the credits.

Another good episode. A very good space skirmish, a Ferengi that looks like a Ferengi and most importantly, Picard is getting his mojo back. At last! Long overdue. Shaw is growing on me. Not sold on Vadic, perhaps a little cartoonish?? Raffi had too many scenes but after the welcome appearance of Worf, hopefully this results in far less focus on Raffi. Raffi scenes, I lost my immersion. Its not the actress. On the other hand, season 3 of Picard is far superior to both seasons 1 and 2. Also season 3 is superior to Discovery. Its a shame that season 3 of Picard is not season 1. Looking forward to episode 3 and more of Riker, Picard, Seven, Worf and Crushers. Throw Shaw into the mix too. Btw you were right, it would have been better if episodes 1 and 2 were available at the same time.

I agree on all points. Yes Shaw was very abrasive at first but he's starting to show some good qualities (I've only seen first two episodes). As for Vadic, I think Amanda could have done with a better hair style and a bit of face makeup. To me she just looks like someone's grandmother. A bit odd somehow. And a bit too much cheese acting. Swinging the chair left and right looks a bit immature and forced. Same with the overdone smugness.
@mjohnson2737
@mjohnson2737 Жыл бұрын
@@android0045 Yep, Vadic is an odd one. Other forums assume Vadic is human, I'm doubtful. Since we have Moriarty, Lore, synthetic JLP, holograms with safeties off, one can't rule out Vadic is more than a regular biological disenchanted human raised on Earth. I can't decide whether those marks on her face are skin grafts or scars that are improbably regular in shape. Otoh, maybe she is not cartoonish but a moustache twirling villain with exaggerated mannerisms, as that seen in late 19thC theatre. Perhaps the episodes in TNG with Moriarty are an influence here.

I really enjoyed the episode and give it a 7.5. I’ll keep watching for sure. My complaints are that Shaw and Vatic are corny characters. I think the Shaw character is a bad actor. Unless his character is just written poorly. Plus, Ferengi aren't drug dealers. My biggest complaint, though is every scene is way too dark. It's really my biggest complaint, it takes away from the fun of the series.
