Hey, I'm a VGC player who competed at worlds so maybe I can give some insight into the discussion about Pokemon events. I can't really speak for TCG but for VGC. I think for regionals people are mostly going to be competitive, whereas internats are closer to a convention with side events and cool stuff. If people want to just show up they can always spectate without paying $70 but by and large the spectator experience sucks at regionals. Side events are pretty much all TCG so VG players don't really engage with them as much (which is a complaint - they really could cater side events to VG but dont). There isn't really cosplay or casual games going on. I've heard a vast majority of people attending only attend one event a year, just for the experience, and attendance drops off as the season progresses. There's a decent size contingent of people who compete casually and go to multiple events but I think that's relatively small. But the main aspect is that worlds is a very attainable goal provided you're willing to go to 6+ regionals, internats, and locals. The top 20 or so players in NA probably make their money back, the next 20 (myself in that group) can make worlds in a handful of events, but the other 60 players who make worlds are often grinding out 6+ regionals to do so. As compared to yugioh where you get your invite to nats in 1-2 events and could sit out the rest of the year if you chose to. The stuff you get for a YCS is way cooler than the stuff you get for a regional, which is usually a playmat and promo card. But I've heard prize money is going to increase this season with the increase is playerbase which is one thing yugioh doesn't have. With respect to worlds you were spot on and it made it pretty miserable this year. We had to wait in a 3 hour line to check in on Thursday and they ran out of some stuff we were supposed to get. Along with the hack checks they had a mass disconnect in top 16 of worlds. There were so many scuffed things that happened for competitors, and it was so clear the entire event was made for spectators. In my two week trip to Japan, the two days I had to attend as a competitor were the worst two days of the trip. I dont know if I'd like a more competitor focused experience - being on stream in front of a thousand people last year was one of the coolest experiences I've had - but there's definitely a balance to be struck.

Talking about the prizes and entry promos reminds me of what they've been doing with Shadowverse Evolve. They've taken meta defining cards printed in their class starter decks and rarity bumped them for entries. Since the starter decks have each class's base set mechanical cards like Floral Fencer, Quickblader, and Shapeshifting Mage they're actually pretty interesting as prizes due to being the only foil copies of eternal cards. It's like if you could only get animated copies of Hearthstone core set class cards if you win tournaments. Unfortunately it's a Bushiroad TCG meaning the actual tournament system was created by someone who thinks the entire continental US, LATAM, and Europe can be run in the same way they run prefecture tournaments in Japan so no one outside of one store in California with the last 20 US Bushiroad TCG players will ever see them. You can say a lot about how terrible the prizing is for Yugioh, at least Konami doesn't get in the way of people actually playing it.

1:03:00 Not seeing any purrely is insane there were so many purrely players in regionals. Speaking from Toronto but most of the top tables was Purrely, how many got top 8 I'm not 100% sure. There was lots of purrely representation in the area.
