A few years ago, I did a 100 mile ultramarathon in 24 hours. I could barely move for days afterwards, much less hike miles and miles with a pack on my back. I was also very well rested beforehand, and slept in my own cozy bed before and after. Dixie, you are amazing and I bow down to your awesomeness. Stay safe, Canada is calling you!

I have the distinct feeling that most have not really pondered just how great of a feet that was. 62 miles in 24 hours with a pack on, in completely unknown terrain, through woods etc... That is almost in-human. She is a BEAST!

The PCT section from Burney Falls to Castella was what I used to warm up for my JMT hike in 2015. It just so happened that it was also as the first wave of PCT hikers was going through at the end of June. I saw a few snakes, a few deer, and lots of poison oak, and I met some cool people like Larb and Oatmeal and Eskimo. You probably didn't notice that there is an old house foundation on the north side of that dam you walked across in the dark, but that's where the house that my mom grew up in was located. My grandfather worked at the PG&E power plant near there, and the family lived in a company house right at the dam. Hike on, Dixie!

I have had significant electrolyte issues over the years, and it you are only thinking about it now, I think you are fine. Magnesium deficiency gives you debilitating cramps.Best is Magnesium Citrate tablets. Sodium is easiest to get from plain table salt on your food. Potassium, use Windsor's Half Salt on your food The things you mention have such low levels of electrolytes as to be little more than marketing ploys.

As a Track runner, my coach told us that drinking 100% water or 100% Gatorade all the time is bad for you both ways. The best is to have a bit of both to keep your body hydrated and when you feel water isn't good enough you're probably low on electrolytes. It's also best to take sips of water through out the day rather than drinking it all at once. Trust me your body will feel so much better! PS If you're feeling thirsty, you're already on your way to dehydrating (not extreme, but you're low on water) cause your body is actively telling you that you need water

My doctor friend says it is totally possible to drink to much water and flush the electrolytes out of your system it is called "hyponatremia" (low sodium). So you do have to balance things when your working hard and drinking water. This is something reinforced by a Marine I knew in college who served in Iraq.

Years ago (actually decades - right after college) I personally experienced 'water poisoning' for lack of a better term. We were hiking in the Whites on a gorgeous, hot summer day and I got significantly dehydrated. (There was not the information out there then that there is now, nor equipment as advanced as what exists today, including replacement electrolyte packages.) Anyway, I got dehydrated and when we reached a water source, I chugged several liters of water in a short period of time. This threw off my electrolyte balance - as I learned later - and I was essentially incapacitated. I felt horribly sick - sicker than I had ever felt with the flu - and basically couldn't even move. Fortunately I recovered overnight, helped no doubt by nibbling on some salty food. Take excessive hydration without sufficient electrolytes as a very serious risk.

Ultralite gear is great and all but there are some cons...they often break/tear. I have a Jansport pack I've used since the early 1990s. Yes, it weighs about 3.5 lbs but it's strong and has great pockets and has lasted over time. To each his/her own. Carry what you want, when you want, where you want. You're out there living life. Not much else matters.
@FrankBergdoll7 жыл бұрын
Loved the wildlife! Very nice. Less happy to hear about your pack. Recently, I picked-up a ULA Circuit and took it on a rough terrain 7-day hike (West Coast Trail, Vancouver Island Canada). While on the trail, an internal post snapped and I did a repair with a tent-pole splint. When I got home, I contacted ULA and they shipped me a replacement at no-cost via courier. Just something to consider. I've had similar high-quality service from Vasque boots. It's always good to know which companies help out hikers. Also - on the ULA pack. I was literally climbing over barnacle encrusted rocks the size of cars and the fabric handled it. Sadly, my legs looked less spectacular (thank goodness for polysporin)

@davidstockbridge7 жыл бұрын
Hyponatremia is no joke, I've always heard that eating salty snacks is a good way to avoid it when hiking on a really hot day. There is a limit on how much water your body can assimilate. Also loved the 62 mile day and the deer following you (great camera work).

I'm really enjoying your PCT adventure. Watching a couple episodes each night. Maybe that deer just wanted you to throw it a snack. (But not a Snickers bar!) I had a poster of Mount Shasta (and Mount Rushmore) hanging on my bedroom wall when I was a kid in the early 1970s. Nice to see it again.
@walkingwriter43255 жыл бұрын
I take that back. It was a poster of Mount Shuksan (in Washington), not Mount Shasta. The memory is not what it used to be. Must have been thinking of the old Shasta soda commercials from the 70s. Still, great video!

Alluding to the fact that their packs aren't up for thru-hikes while also stating that "We make our thru hike packs from bombproof, foolproof Dyneema® Composite Fabrics (formerly Cuben Fiber), so they’re ready to Triple Crown whenever you are. " seems a little weird doesn't it? You'd expect something a bit better from a company that charges $300+ for a pack.

Yes you can drink to much water to fast. The biggest effect is to delete the potassium level, hypokalemic. Marathon runners do this. I have done it before on long dry hikes. Now I carry Morton lite salt which is a mix of Na and K chloride.
@kellyjohnson36176 жыл бұрын
One thing many Mexican field workers do to replenish electrolytes is add masa and milk and Mexican cocoa to water and boil it until its well mixed. And put it in a bottle and sip on it all day. It's delicious and creamy and filling and keeps you from getting depleted of necessary electrolytes when you are in the sun all day.

Hey Dixie, love that you are catching up on your video uploads since you have been in Oregon these past, almost 2 weeks. I am assuming you are getting caught up with these edited uploads from your friend in Alabama. He does great work with the raw materials you have provided him. I hope the Oregon fires have calmed down. From what I understand, they have gotten the Multnomah Falls fire under control, although they are pristine and gorgeous. BTW, I am glad you decided to take the side trip to Burney Falls, Thy never fail to amaze most people , hikers , tourists and the like. I love that those deer were curious about you. They have not too much fear of humans since there has been a huge moratorium on deer hunting, although the season should be on right now, be safe, wear bright colors on trail. See ya...Frank T. Hey KZbinrs! The passion for Dixie, and the community we’re seeing here is amazing! However, we feel strongly that there was a misunderstanding between our staff and Dixie, related to the holes in the outer pockets on her pack. And we’d love the opportunity to make it right, as we always do for our customers. For clarity, we asked a few of our standard warranty/repair questions when Dixie first reached out and made us aware of the issue (in July), and never got a response back. Thru Hikers make up a large portion of our customer base and we’ve had thousands of packs on all of the long trails, to great reviews and success. And when customers have an issue, we are known for strong customer service, including free repairs or sending a loaner out while we do the repair. Of course, this always depends on the customer’s issue level and what they want to do for a resolution. So we are a bit perplexed by the comments here. Dixie - if you’re available to chat, please give our office a call and ask for Lays (Kendra), our customer service rep and accomplished AT thru hiker (Class of 2016). Lays has also reached out via the contact phone # on your initial email from July. Our office # is 800.464.9208. Cheers from Maine!

If we could talk to the animals, learn their languages Maybe take an animal degree. We'd study elephant and eagle, buffalo and beagle, Alligator, guinea pig, and flea. We would converse in polar bear and python, And we could curse in fluent kangaroo. If people asked us, can you speak in rhinoceros, We'd say, "Of courserous, can't you?" If we could talk to the animals, learn their languages Think of all the things we could discuss If we could walk with the animals, talk with the animals, Grunt and squeak and squawk with the animals, And they could squeak and squawk and speak and talk to us. source: www.lyricsondemand.com/d/drdoolittlelyrics/ificouldtalktotheanimalslyrics.html
