I guess the use of short rows in the construction of pullover is part of the evolution of knitted (and crocheted too) patterns. I also sew, and I have read about the shirt pattern. It began as a rectangle and changed through the ages with sleeves, gussets, darts, etc. I think it's the same thing and it's great because you can have patterns that can be adapted to lots of sizes and shapes. Your colorwork is amazing!

Hello Selma from Airdrie in Alberta. You are my favourite podcaster, sharing beautiful and inspiring knitting projects, nature footage and book reading comments. I will be making my first two - colour garment soon, and I am planning on making - “Timely” pattern by Libby Jonson, with stripes. I am still discovering how a simple one color string of yarn can make variety of different textures, and now I am finding that adding colour to the decision making process is a whole new experience. In the past, I had sew some of my garments, and I loved using printed fabrics, but the colour choice and design on the fabric was already there. And in knitting I am making my “fabric” and garment from scratch. To add to that, my taste in printed designs has changed over the years, also I am sporting my natural silver hair since last year, and it was a big colour change to consider in my wardrobe. Nevertheless I am enjoying this new discovery process, and I am happy that we can see other knitters projects and share our own. Cheers Kasia

Loved your podcast today. It resonated with me in so many ways! I have been all about the sweaters too and have so many swirling around in my head I want to knit. I bought yarn for 4 sweaters and a dress since Christmas and have had to force myself to hold it there. Currently working on the Willow Sweater by Pam Allen in Quince and Co yarn. I also have the Bohus on my list and want to make the Versites Unite, but haven’t picked the yarn for that. I, too, have ventured into mending my socks in January and my feeble attempts look much like yours. I watched a few KZbin videos to try to learn it. So, many of the same things going on in my world. 🥰🥰 Happy Knitting !

New watcher/subscriber: that is a beautiful sweater. I was wondering the same thing about short row shaping. I am making my very first sweater and I could've left off the short rows at the bottom.back of the sweater and I really didn't understand the point of them. The back of the neck ones made sense to me though. I like to knit a pattern first before I start changing things in it and since I hadn't ever made a sweater, I am calling this a learning experience. It is not a fitted style. I have also discovered my colorwork knitting is a tighter gauge than my plain knitting. I am obsessed with colorwork and have made over 40 fair isle hats, am working on designing hats and will start colorwork mittens soon.

Let’s see if I get it right the first time this time!! It is mind boggling for sure!! I can’t seem to take this new sweater off but I know what you mean. Love your yarn store footage. I wish I could visit a yarn store with so much beautiful color yarn! Buying yarn online is so terrible. The color, weight, look of the yarn is never accurate as seeing and picking it myself! I always end up with yarn that I don’t really like when I ordered online. I bought and tried a color work thimble. It was felt awkward. It was not the one you had on your podcast. I don’t manage yarn for color work very well. I knit continental too. I wish I could get the right yarn, thimble, and be able to knit a color work yoke sweater this year! Great podcast as usual! The snow activities look like a lot of fun! Thank you for sharing! ❤️❤️
@littlebigknits3 жыл бұрын
Interesting! I haven’t tried any other thimbles but I have seen avid knitters using them so there must be some decent ones out there. You don’t absolutely need one though. I didn’t use one for years but it has definitely improved my experience!
@aknitlife3 жыл бұрын
@@littlebigknits I bought it from Amazon. However I have small fingers, so it hampered the process. Other knitters also mentioned that it did not help. So I don’t use it. I’ve initially bought it to help me out with yarn management because I kept on getting tangled after knitting a few stitches. Thanks to your KAL, I finally ironed out that problem. I am still slow even though I knit continental because I am trying to even out tension/puckering of stitches and working on pattern with a iPhone is not easy.

Hello from the Uk. I Love your beautiful sweater. Your podcast is always inspirational. Despite the fact that I have knitted for quite some years, I have never really got to grips with stranded knitting. I find the whole idea of colourwork, and the its associated techniques quite intimidating. However this year, I am determined I will learn how to do it( I guess for someone so competent at colourwork the idea of someone else finding it daunting is puzzling ). Currently I am practising half an hour everyday on a large swatch using two colours, one hand throwing the other continental. I will keep you posted, (oh no I hear you cry) wish me luck. Michelle UK

Hi Selma! I wanted to chime in on short rows. I can appreciate that they aren't for everyone, but I really love them for a couple reasons. I have a small chest and shoulders that point forward. (I also spend too much time hunched over a keyboard.) This all causes my back to be way longer than my front. I hate it when my lower back is bare and there's a bunch of fabric in front. I often add short rows at both the neck and lower back.
@littlebigknits3 жыл бұрын
And someone was just saying they use them like that for their husband’s sweaters which made me realize that the sweater I made for Alejandro probably could have benefited from that. I will keep that in mind for the puntal!! Thanks for chiming in 😊

Beautiful sweater! As a dressmaker I've been surprised at how little bust shaping there is in sweaters etc. One of the big advantages of making your own clothes is to achieve a better fit but knitting patterns (inspite of all the recent love of short rows) seems to still be where dressmaking patterns were 50+ years ago.
@littlebigknits3 жыл бұрын
I think there could be explanations of what techniques are for so that people understand what and why they are doing something at the very least. So many people don’t quite understand and just follow patterns to the letter which doesn’t always work out. I sure wish I knew more about dress making!

Steingass. 5.Colorwork is challenging but entertaining. 6 I loved learning to knit English style & using both sides of my brain by using both hands. It's like puzzles, your brain is excercising. 7. I used to only wear black because I couldn't be bothered to use my noggin to combine colors (I do have many pairs of pretty shoes. Love wearing burgundy or caramel heels). 8. I love the drape created by knitting. I'm also looking to steeking a loner pullover & assing a zipper to make a jacket.

I suggest the yarn left over should be a hat and/or cowl to match your beautiful sweater with the design from the sweater.

My grandmother darned socks, she did it with the same color as the hole and she used a wooden ball where she supported to close the little hole in the garment, was it something similar in the workshop?
@littlebigknits3 жыл бұрын
It was. I have a wooden ball as well. I think it’s called a darning mushroom that was my mother’s and perhaps my grandmother’s. It helps but you can use anything rounded

I just bought Jennifer Steingass's Silver Forest pattern and have hand dyed the yarn for her Gardengate and have started swatching for it

Short rows are really a thing now! I have noticed that I really need them on back of the neck, but NOT lower of the yoke! The latter just makes it even more baggy back for me than usual (have had that problem). But for hubby those lower short rows are so good fit and without them the hem tends to be too short in back. As I realised that this is because his wide upper back muscles, I thought to try some short rows on my front, to accommodate the bust as that's where I have more wideness (though not because of muscles! 😅). This seems to help with back bagginess as well as keeping the front hem drape more nicely. I think one can have a perfectly functional sweater without short rows and if one wants to add them, their placing is really personal.

Very interesting to hear about the fit for your husband. I may try that for the sweater I am making for mine! The first one I made for him rides up the back a tad so that would likely fix that!!! Kiitos!

Thanks Selma! Loved seeing Wabi Sabi's storefront - I have ordered from B.C. several times. There must be something in the air - I'm similarly obsessed with several sweaters (2 of them colorwork) and Ranunculus is also one of them! For me it's all the beautiful wooly yarn available that's so appealing at this wintry time. And yes it's true - never enough time!

Very coincidental because I just watched Voolenvine podcast where Kristen talked about knitting with three colours for the colourwork on her Birkin pullover, so imagine that's where the ring would come in handy for English knitters like myself who usually knits with one colour in each hand. Would stop you picking up one colour at a time
@littlebigknits3 жыл бұрын
I am not sure if the ring works when you hold yarn in the right hand. It would work for the yarns in the left hand for sure.
@terricox35593 жыл бұрын
@@littlebigknits oh yes I meant for the colours you're holding in your left hand, knitting as normal with the yarn in the right hand x
@littlebigknits3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely that would work! And if you look around there are less expensive models

I am a continue tal knitter and have been considering getting a ring like yours. Could you not have a 3rd or 4th yarn in the extra slots? I'm really reluctant to have to have a 3rd yarn in my right hand.
@littlebigknits3 жыл бұрын
I could but somehow it seemed easier to have it in my right hand because it was one stitch every so often. Next time I will try to have them all in the ring. I really can recommend a ring whether one gets a fancy one or a commercial one

@@littlebigknits Thank you! I'm currently using a ring handmade with wire and beads, but your silver ring just looks so sturdy! It will definitely be a gift to myself!

I"m not a fan of top down sweaters in general and will sometimes just knit a bottom up version of a designers top down . I prefer the fit of a squared off shoulder over the rounded raglanish version that most (but not all) top down sweaters result in. It seems that short rows and top down have become the new norm in sweater knitting and more short row sections make the construction unique.

Set in sleeves create a more tailored look for sure. I agree with you that raglan and yokes are the rage at the moment, but that will change again.
