Episode 96 Part 2 Ford hardtop coupe bow style headliner for Fairlane and Mustang Autorestomod

This week finalize how to install a hardtop or coupe headliner in a 1964 Fairlane Thunderbolt. Though we are installing this on a Fairlane, the tips will apply to most any Ford hardtop or coupe headliner install. We also give tips on what adhesive glue to use, why blow dryers are for more than hair and generally how to set up the car for a clean, trouble free install.

i use contact cement, and any puckers will typically flee once trim, coat hanger, visors, etc are installed

Glad we could help! Put the screws in the holes for the sun visors prior to installation. Yes we use the weatherstrip adhesive on any headliner install, even when installing things like the sail panels.

Doug, sadly there is no way to do that. And we recommend just getting new gaskets and replacing the old ones. Check out our video on glass replacement to see how that is done.

Good point Tom. Ford trimmed the headliner back from the edge, but left the headliner over the lip and onto the sealer surface. Here is how we think Ford did it: They laid a heavy bead on the perimeter of the opening, set the glass on the opening with the lower lip of the gasket on the opening lip then laid the glass down and used trim tools to pull the rest in. Messy, but effective. We may revisit this at some point down the road and show this method.

Thanks for the great video. I used a small portable hand held, steamer, rather than using a heat gun/hair drier. Did not have a hair drier...girlfriend took that with her when she moved out...LOL Also used old drop clothes, so not to drop any glue on the interior. Remember take notes....measure twice cut once !! Thanks JEFF.....

Steamers are awesome, I use the hairdryer because it is a common item that most guys will have.

No the windshield is the first part to glue. Check out part one in Episode 95.

I notice that you wrap the headliner around the front/rear window flange. Wouldn't the material affect how the Butyl sealant interfaces between the flange and the window? Did you trim the headliner away from the seal surface to the window?

I have a 65 Mustang. Is it possible to install the headliner without taking out the windshield and rear window? The thought of that makes me nervous.

on this car you said you need the rods in the same holes, when you did the Mustang Fastback you raised the rods to a higher hole for head clearance whats better? I'm about to put a headliner in my 1968 Mustang Coup

Jeff Driver Hardtops in general will not need that extra room required by the fastback. However, if you were hitting the headliner prior to the install then you might want to move it up one set.

Is the yellow adhesive being used different than the stuff you pick up at the local auto part store? I ask cause the stuff Ive always bought by 3M was pure trash. Works great till the heat of the summer and it goes soft and cant even hold its own weight.

Does it matter what color the adhesive is (Black or yellow) or would it matter the color of the headliner ( black adhesive for black headliner and yellow for white headliners?).

It doesn't matter but it matters to me lol. Because if it's a black adhesive on a black headliner if it gets on the outside and I don't see it it's not as noticeable. Same with the yellow adhesive on the white headliner it'll be noticeable but not like black would.

We use 1965-70 Mustang door opening welt for holding the pieces in.

The windlace has to go in first. I see where you didn't use anyon this car but from what I can see, it must be installed before the headliner tack strip.

Great videos.... well done.... one question, how are you ment to install your windlace after the head liner is in??? You want be able to squash the clips without ruining the liner... Do you poke the liner past the installed windlace??

The windlace goes over the teeth on the retainer strip like the headliner, and then the teeth are bent.

@@AutoRestoMod mine has windlace clips behind the saw tooth headliner retainer strip....(from factory), so if you put the headliner in first, then you have no way of securing the windlace via the clips..... I just finished mine (clients car) just now,(hence me watching your awesome vids) and the headliner tucked up well with the windlace in its proper clips.... so I'm thinking its ment to be windlace first
