I would love to see an episode discussing celebrities/companies trying to engage with the internet for like, voting. Remember when McDonald's let people create burgers in a contest for a new menu item and some of the results were "Toddler Body Bag" (no patty, three slices of cheese, no lettuce) and "A Vision Of Christ" (just bread.) Or the infamous Mountain Dew Poll where the top two flavours voted to be introduced were "Gushing Granny" and "Hitler Did Nothing Wrong" Not to mention the contest for Taylor Swift to perform at a school, and the internet ended up voting for a school for the deaf.

my mother a couple years ago was so deeply invested in mary kay, she bought thousands of dollars of makeup at a time just to impress her higher up associates. she barely ever sold product but kept buying and buying like she was. i'll be honest some of their products kinda slay but she was so obsessed with it that we had to sell our car and spend less money because she needed it to buy product. now they're all in boxes stacked around my house probably never to see the light of day again, and i've come to realize that my mom is deeply mentally ill and they preyed on her because she was so vulnerable to things like freedom and power. a lot of my childhood was spent going to school trying to sell makeup for my mom and going to initiation parties, and occasionally travelling to conferences in ontario, texas, and even london once. now she's given up on it but my family can't EVER speak about those days or bring up how fucked up it was for fear of her going mental. so glad its going out of style these days

Ok but that bit about financial/child abuse: The 2008 recession effected me SO HARD as a kid, I was straight up so worried that we would end up on the streets and my parents stressed it so hard that we needed to not buy fun things often and only things we need. I still have a hard time buying things for my own enjoyment now. Fast forward to 2020, during the pandemic my little sister who is almost a whole decade younger than me kept asking my parents for random frivolous purchases all the time and they just let her have whatever and my blood was boiling bc I was like "oh my god where is HER 'we r going to be on the streets' talk?" I never said anything because I knew it wasn't my place and that she shouldn't be traumatized the same way but oh gosh it's so tough seeing someone have it so easy when you got the short end.
@sofiipote7

well, you can always talk about it with your parents, right? not saying that they should do that to your sister, but just asking maybe why they did it to you, since it still bothers you

I’m so sorry. You definitely shouldn’t have had to hear any of that as a child. I’m there with you too I hate buying myself things I don’t necessarily NEED, but we deserve the monetary success that we work hard for!!! I wish it was easier to let that ideology go, and to spoil yourself the way you deserve. I hope you don’t feel too bad about being upset with your parents now, They definitely were and are still in the wrong, I agree with the above comment, I say bring it up to them 👌

I didn’t realize till you said it, but I graduated college in 2008 and it was a struggle for like a decade to get a good job! I just ordered a computer and full setup and had to justify it to myself because I never ever buy anything nice. I spent my whole adult life even when I was making enough in the habit of never getting myself anything I want because of that mindeset I started out with.

That's a bit of a fallacy. Yes, employers (especially under capitalism) profit significantly off of the backs of the laborers and lower/middle class. HOWEVER, the difference is that MLMs don't provide a minimum wage, don't have benefits, and don't provide for any kind of bereavement or any other paid time off. When MLM consultants say "You can work anywhere!" what they really mean is that you can never stop working. Because you don't get paid unless you're selling. And you don't get paid WELL unless you're recruiting. So. If you compare them superficially, then that comparison makes sense. But a closer look shows that the two are vastly different. Not to defend capitalism, but MLMs are far worse; they are pyramid schemes that have found the flimsiest of loopholes to appear legal. Meanwhile, the founders are lining their pockets as quickly as possible before the MLM folds and they start a new one.

I was a girl-scout until I was 18, and I have worked for Girl Scouts too. you don’t have to sell cookies to be in a troop, you don’t have to sell cookies at all, Sarah was right we don’t have to purchase the cookies cause people pay for them before we order them, once you turn in the order sheet and funds you distribute them to people who purchased from you. The funds from cookie sales are used so the troop, or an independent scout can go on experiences, wether that be camping, traveling, horse back riding etc. the funds are also used so the troop can host service projects, for example, we purchased a bunch of food and prepared lunches at the Ronald McDonald house for the families that stay there. Cookies really just fund what the scouts wanna do, and to get patches and awards you have to go out an do stuff.

I was in an mlm during 2018 and they touted they were one of the “good” ones. And tbh I didn’t lose any money and I did make a bit, BUT I made like $25-$50 a month after putting in hours of work creating content, talking to people etc. The company would boast that you don’t need to recruit people in order to make money selling, but what they didn’t say is that you would have to get dozens and dozens of customers to make it worth your while. AND if you weren’t able to get that many customers (most people didn’t) they would guilt you by saying that you weren’t working hard enough, that you needed to go over the company provided education on how to get sales (which was mostly feel good fluff saying to BELIEEEEEVE in yourself) and to put in more hours. The higher ups in the company were people that already had an established social media following, or they got into the company early, give or take a few that got lucky. I didn’t realize until much later that I actually have some trauma around my time in the mlm. When I had signed up, I very recently had a baby and was dealing with living across the country from my family while suffering through postpartum depression.. also my husband and I were broke after all the time he had to take off work. I was sold a lie that I would find a SISTERHOOD, that I could make a HUGE financial difference in my life, and when I didn’t find those things I was made to feel like such a failure. MLMs are disgusting, predatorial companies that like to say they “empower” women, but really women are the target that they hurt the most.

my uncle bought a Kirby vacuum about 8 years ago and still has debt from it, the man showed up at his home and was let in my uncle at the time at some substance abuse problems and got very drunk/high he talked to the salesman for a couple hours and when he awoke the next morning he saw the vacuum sitting in the living room and asked his roommates which idiot bought it, then found a receipt in his pocket for this $3k vacuum (which he later traded for drugs). He decided to not pay for the vacuum's payments and hoped that after a few years they'd forget about it, they did not instead they sold his debt, and now he has shit credit and often warns me to never buy a Kirby vacuum.

"I feel like people who had chicken pox are immune to shingles" yeah that's what my mom thought in the 90s when she tried (and succeeded) to get me exposed to chicken pox. turns out it's exposure to chicken pox that *causes* shingles so now i have that to worry about 🙃
@aspannas
@aspannas 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah when you get chicken pox, the virus stays in your body for the rest of your life and can flare up and that's when you get shingles. I had shingles a few years ago and it's was really painful and itchy but fortunately it was a very small amount on my side (on the rib cage). Got prescribed a cream with steroids and it went away after like 1-2 months. It's much better to have chicken pox as a child though, I hear it's much worse as an adult, so it's best for kids to get it at a young age. But I can without a doubt say that getting shingles is not even near as bad as having chicken pox all over your body, so I don't think you should be worried, it's also quite rare. But that of course depends on the amount of shingles you have, I can imagine having a much bigger area than I had would be VERY painful.
@hannahckirk

brittany!! when i was 19 i almost got roped into a pyramid/mlm scheme too😭 i had just dropped out of college and really needed a job, and my mom had gotten in contact with a friend that was involved (and pretty high up the ladder too??lol) but yeah he 'recruited' me and showed me kinda his day to day and what that would entail if i decided to get involved. i remember him having all these nice, flashy things and i was super impressed lmao i was tryna get like him fr. i did the whole song and dance too: going to introductory meetings where they try to recruit in bigger groups, i took all the classes for the product (it was life insurance stuff but i wont say the company), this guy even took me to headquarters to meet all the higher ups. it wasn't until after all of that, that i realized it seemed a LOT like a pyramid situation and i backed out. and i had spent so much money of taking the 'classes' too 😅

I love that you guys dove into this topic a bit! It’s important to talk about because the more people are aware the less they are susceptible to the scam. I do think there was a little confusion about MLMs vs pyramid schemes. Most MLMs are basically pyramid schemes, and do rely heavily on recruiting to make money. There isn’t really any “legit” MLMs that don’t utilize pyramid scheme like practices. If anyone is interested in more information about MLMs, there is a community on KZbin who do great work investigating and breaking down MLMs and their shady practices. I suggest CC Suarez, Savannah Marie, and Erin Bies just to name a few!

I almost fell for the same MLM that Brittany did, where they told us we would sell textbooks to families during the summer, and that our pay would be through commissions. They also promised that whatever degree you were going into, they would network you into one of their top 5 industries, like how when you have english majors and biology majors in the same room? So glad my parents shut that down when I tried to tell them. The sad part was that I cried for days to my friends bc at the time I needed a job as a freshman in college, so when a job opportunity pops up with major wishes, it destroys you when you get denied.

It sucks when you see someone you went to school with go into an mlm. She does have another job at a nursing home I think, but she also sells paparazzi jewelry and now mary k stuff. Her Instagram has turned into an ad for the stuff and "girl boss" stuff. It sucks cause I can tell she is kinda desperate for money and seems to have lost her soul a little bit you know? Like, the things you do for money and the weird character you become when you are in sales, that sucks. I can tell she wouldn't be doing this stuff if she had more money. I hope that she didnt get her hopes up too much about this stuff and gets out soon cause I can tell that she is working hard at this. She goes live like a few times a month and tries to sell stuff. One of favorite Anecdotes to do with MLM's- When I moved I had to get a new library card, and decided to browse the selection and vibe check the place. There was a whiteboard with markers and a question of the month "What are you proudest of?" And there's the usual stuff about meeting goals, building a happy family, and one saying they got help for their mental health. Directly under the mental health one is some woman shilling out her MLM, declaring 'starting my own business with It Works'. She also listed her name and number.

My mom is basically funding the entire thing which means EVERYTHING she uses from her skin care, hair care, makeup, dish soap, tile cleaner, protein powder, vitamins, supplements, essential oils, etc… are from amway. She’s now selling for them too and called me closed minded and negative when she told me to get 10 people on board and I said “that’s the definition of a pyramid scheme. I wouldn’t wanna do that if I knew 10 people”. They’re fully brainwashed and it’s literally driving a wedge between us.

I love this podcast and I always enjoy listening, Sarah and Brittany are both really funny and have great chemistry. I did just want to say, however, that we shouldn’t be so quick to judge people who have entered into an MLM or a pyramid scheme, because there are grades and shades of both and some are much more insidious and highly organised than others. They pray on vulnerable people who are desperate to make money; most often single mothers, women in abusive relationships and need to become financially independent, people who are generally very isolated in their lives, people who are trying to get out of debt, etc. These people are targeted and sold the promise of not only a self empowering way to make (lots of) money but also to be part of a supportive community in which their contributions are valued and there are opportunities to be rewarded for achievements. Unless we have been in a similar situation we can’t really speak to the intelligence or gullibility of such people. Furthermore, the fallout of being in an MLM or pyramid scheme is so much worse than being fired from a standard 9-5 or the negative aspects of being in a 9-5 because not only do you lose insane amounts of money and plunge yourself into debt (or further into debt) but you have probably lost contact with many friends and family along the way who either didn’t want to get involved or who did and also lost their life savings. Additionally, these “companies” organise themselves in a way that makes it incredibly hard to sue them or to get any kind of financial restitution, or to even leave in general. You have also lost the community you thought you had because they either haven’t seen yet how they will eventually be screwed over or they left long ago when you refused to believe them about what they were experiencing. It’s is a complex issue that has been perfectly tailored to the capitalist, neo-liberal hell scape we are living in, in which monetary productivity is the only way to have value in society and where the market will self correct for exploitative and destructive financial endeavours. Just something to think about.
