I just my first vertigo episode 10 days ago. I never knew much about vertigo or that it could make someone believe they're about to die if they've never had it before. I called 911 because I thought something horrible was happening. Well it was a very horrible experience. Been to the doctor a couple times since and my last visit I went to an ear doctor and my doctor showed me this maneuver. I think it does help for sure in this video was a good reminder to re-explain it to me. I'm still experiencing the vertigo now and I I'm getting really frustrated especially knowing that it's something I'll have to deal with from now on.

I had vertigo many years in my 30s, then it reappeared in my late 40s but seems to be happening more often now that I’m 50. In the past, I could perform the Epley maneuver and it worked whenever I got vertigo or feeling super dizzy. Now, it’s been a little over a week and though it’s better, I still get dizzy if I bend over certain ways throughout the day. I’ll go home and try to lay back to reset the crystals but won’t get dizzy. It’s only when I bend over.

Read what I said here about my wife's experience. "My wife had vertigo for over 20 years. She went to a physio who said that my wife had the worst case she had seen. She explained that there are a number of procedures, including Epley, in order to address vertigo. My wife underwent treatment for one session, using an Epley type procedure. She went back, and the physio said the BPPV (vertigo) was completely gone. It seems incredible, but can be easily fixed." Advice: Get a person who really knows what they are doing. Ask around locally, and find someone very competent. The vertgo problem is about misplaced crystals in your ear canal. The procedure is horrible, with everything spinning according to my wife, but well worth it. Your vertigo will be gone!

They instead said I ate too much food last night, and my stomach didn't digest the food and that caused dizziness. I vomitted countless times it was quite hard for me to vomit. I treated my vertigo yesterday it was gone. But it came back earlier. I can't handle the extreme dizziness. There was this time a thought came to my head. It's better to die than to feel this extreme dizziness forever. I'm having vertigo and at the same time the mucus(phlegm) is thick. I have multiple vertigos. I'm all alone facing this problem.

@Corrodias3 жыл бұрын
I've read a meta-study that said doing so isn't helpful. I also saw another video by another pair of physical therapists who say they just have the patient stay upright "the rest of the day" and sleep somewhat elevated if they can, for a single night. Most likely, it's not going to make a significant difference either way, and you can repeat the maneuver for as many days as needed, anyway.

You're welcome. Sorry you are still having some vertigo issues. Have you tried vestibular rehab? Something like a Balance Master might help if you live near a clinic that has one.
@wdtony6 жыл бұрын
AskDoctorJo Yes I have, and that’s great advice. Ultimately my physical therapist had me doing all necessary exercises for vestibular rehab which helped tremendously. I still have occasional vertigo from stroke fatigue but it’s better. After the stroke, I also needed PT for a loss of spacial acclimation. After being in the hospital my brain couldn’t adapt to larger spaces. Gradually and slowly building my brain’s ability to process open spaces took years of effort. Many of the concepts I used to improve, I fashioned from balance disorder PT. I’m doing much better now. PT is all about the details.

I took my son camping in a tent in 2017, it went from hot to cold and damp and I didn't sleep well if at all, and I woke up the next morning and fell over after sitting up in the tent. It was so bad I thought i had a stroke or something, had never had vertigo before. I was so off balance, I couldn't turn my head on the trip back while driving and had to take it very slow. Ended up getting a CT or mri to be safe, which was normal, and a week later an ENT did eply in his office, and I was 100% cured. I couldn't believe it. I've done it from home a couple of times since, and it always helps, though not to the effect the ENT had.

I had this done yesterday by an ENT surgeon but he knocked my head above my right ear as he gently moved my head from right to left. When he brought my body up from the left lying position I couldn't believe that I felt no nausea and no spinning. Vertigo was gone!

@sandynesbitt88477 жыл бұрын
Knocked gently by the knuckle above my right ear as the dr moved my head according to the Epley Maneuver as told by Dr Jo. It has worked and I have no more vertigo! You need to follow all that she says about 45° starting with the head on the right side and moving gently on to the left side, with eyes open etc. Check out her video - the maneuver needs to be done by a professional. Good luck.

You are the first one to say we need to keep our head up for 48 hours...it seemed to me we needed to do that since the crystals remember where they were and may want to return..
@AskDoctorJo5 жыл бұрын
Some research does show that it is no longer necessary, but I still think it gives you a better chance of keeping the crystals in place. It's at least worth trying.

Can you do this to yourself without a person supporting your head? My neck muscles still work fine, I'm sure I can support my head.

I have done it on my own and it works
@blueeyedgojo6893 жыл бұрын
I always do it on myself. Just lie on your bed. Your whole head doesn't need to hang off the bed with someone holding it. You can just go to the edge where your head is tilted back but supported by the bed.

I am going to research that type of doctor today. I’ve viewed all of your videos as well as others and although I feel lightheaded, I cannot set off an actual episode of vertigo. I need an expert I believe.

2 years ago after contracting covid I ended up in hospital for a week with a migraine and vertigo which I couldn't shake. I had the Epley treatment by a physio for awhile once out of hospital. It seemed to help. It did make me quite nauseous during the treatment. Now I seem to get vertigo when I get headaches which is often or when I lay down to sleep.

Thank you Dr. Jo for sharing this video. I’m just having the BPPV when I wake this morning, and searching for the treatment in youtube. I will ask someone in my family to learn your video, and treat it to me. My question is, how many time should I do this in a day, how many days and when the right time? Thank you, doctor Jo...🙏🙏

You're welcome. This particular one should only be done once. If it's truly BPPV, that is often enough. You might have to repeat it in a few days, but give it some time to work before trying again.

Will one epley fix BPPV? I have been so careful since the real bad vertigo that I am just off balance in the morning. I am going to an ENT Monday to have this maneuver done. I just want to be back to normal. Now I am anxious a lot and scared. I feel like it takes me 3 hours in the morning to get passed the anxiety and general off balance feeling. The shower is difficult and driving I get anxious.i will continue my daily activities because I have kids that need me. to live like this is awful. I am praying the epley works Monday and I can resume normal life. I hear sometimes it fixes people the first time. Praying that it does that for me! Thanks for the video

Hello Dr. Jo. First of all, thank you for the detailed explanation on the Epley maneuver. I suffered from vertigo after getting hit in the back of my head. This maneuver cured the vertigo, but I have been feeling a little dizzy and off-balance afterwards. I heard that this is called residual bppv, and it takes a while for your body to adjust. My question is, how long would it take for the dizziness or light headed feeling to go away after this maneuver is done. Thank you again for your help!
@AskDoctorJo7 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! It really depends on how severe your case was to begin with. You can do follow up maneuvers with this video that might help with the rest: www.askdoctorjo.com/content/vertigo-treatment-simple-exercises-bppv Good luck.

I have vestibular hypofunction I've been getting physical therapy for...then the positional vertigo hits. I've been in such bad shape. Violent shaking along with the dizziness. I live alone too. Had a bad fall from this nonsense couple months back, it was a BAD FALL! Having bad vertigo is frightening.. especially the first episode. I thought i was having a stroke. Mine was caused by allergies, sinus infections.. chronic. I have a friend coming today to help with this exercise because i can't drive to go to PT to have them do it. It does work. But for us that also have other issues? Seek professional help. My heart goes out to all suffers..no one can understand how awful vertigo is till it happens to them.

I personally wouldn't. Once you do the maneuver, it should get the crystals back in the right place. Repeating it so quickly might disrupt that. Good luck.

Hey Doctor Jo, please tell me, whether it's from left to right or right to left. When the affected ear is right, from which side to start?
@blueeyedgojo6893 жыл бұрын
If your right side is affected then do your right side. If your other side is not affected there is no reason to do it. If for some reason its both ears, it doesn't matter which you do first.
