The Half Somersault or Foster maneuver for BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) should help with vertigo symptoms if done correctly. For other BPPV treatments and maneuvers watch this video: • Vertigo Treatment for ...
The half somersault maneuver, like any other BPPV maneuver, can make you feel more dizzy or sick for a short period of time afterwards. Sometimes people do get sick and vomit, so make sure you are prepared to stay and home and relax after the treatment.
Each position should be held for about 30 seconds or until the spinning stops. Sometimes it has to be performed 3-5 times in a row, but it is recommended to wait 15 minutes in between each treatment session.

I have had this at main fall or spring weather change three times, last time I was desperate and found this. It took a couple of days, but it was a much shorter bout. This morning I woke up with just a touch as I turned my head in bed to see my clock. Wasn’t terrible, could still walk without spins, so I got on the floor and did the exercise, which made me throw up, but I put the head of my bed up (lord bless sleep number beds for times like these!) and dozed for a couple of hours. I did feel better right after doing it, and no more motion nausea. Two hours later, I have a tad of a headache, but have been able to get up and move around. Not brave enough to do anything that makes me dip or lower my head, but I know I can do the exercise again. This is the first time I have been able to head ( ha ha ) off a vertigo incident before it got nastier. Thanks so VERY much!!

I learned this yesterday. I’ve been dealing with vertigo fir 15 years with no relief. I just had to wait a few weeks for it to go away. I did this last night and was good until I brought my head parallel to the floor. I was so dizzy I had to lay on the floor but kept my head in the 45 degree position but laying down. I’ve never felt dizziness like that. Came upright and was ok. Did it again and barely anything. Woke up this morning and was fine

I was trying to do other BPPV exercises that I found on youtube, but I felt a bit panicked lying down because I needed to vomit safely. So I tried this one, and could vomit safely (without worrying about asphyxiating myself). The exercise helped, my vomiting has stopped, and I will keep doing this exercise as long as I still have vertigo symptoms.

Hello, it would really mean a lot to me if I got an answer to these questions… First of all thank you so much for this video! As someone living in a country that doesn’t really have appropriate health care this video was a life saver! So my mom had been diagnosed with BPPV after she had a very strong episode of dizziness that lead to her falling and hurting her head. Since then she had that episode one more time but luckily she was sitting so she didn’t fall. She describes them as if ‘the ceiling has become floor and vice versa’. She also gets them after a slight head movement to the right or if she suddenly lifts her head up. So after seeing this video, she started doing this exercise, and she did it for the first time yesterday. When she lifted her head up from the floor she felt a bit dizzy but thats all, it wasn’t anything major. She repeated the exercise today again, and when she lifted her head she felt the ‘very bad episode’, the one she felt when she fell. She repeated the exercise again and she again felt it but it was very mild. So my question is, is there a rule for how long she should be doing this exercise because for now she does it once in the morning, and she still feels lightheaded but did not have the strong episode? Is it possible for bppv to completely go away with this exercise? (she also went to an ENT and he did the Eupley manoeuvre but he said that it didn’t work because she didn’t feel dizzy while he was doing it)
@AskDoctorJo
@AskDoctorJo Жыл бұрын
You're welcome! Unfortunately, I don't know that answer since I can't evaluate your mom. Everyone is different. If it is BPPV, yes, it is possible for it to go away completely. With these movements and some others for BPPV, they do sometimes cause people to feel worse before they feel better because it is reproducing the symptoms. I hope they continue to help.

Then started researching on my own n landed on this video eventually. Gosh! It did wonders. Just tried only once n got rid of the issue completely. Is there a way to do this other than kneeling? My knees are so bad they lock when I try to sit on them like you are showing and it is painful. I can't kneel but sure would like to find a way to do this without kneeling.

I'm not sure. It might be possible to sit in a chair and lean over onto a low table, but I haven't seen it done like that, so I'm not sure if it would do the same thing or not.

Hi Doctor Jo, I was supposed to go to PT but live in California and haven't been able to see anyone. Some of your exercises have really helped when I have a vertigo attack. I did this exercise once and it really helped but a few days later I was dizzy again. I have also tried the other BBPV exercise on my own. It makes me feel a little relief but the vertigo and dizziness always come back. I am just bed ridden with dizziness now for months. I just started doing the vertigo exercises you have for two days now. Any idea why it keeps coming back for me? How often can I do the BBPV crystal moving exercises? I do them a bit sporadically when I am having a bad day. I never had vertigo till I got rear ended in a car accident but I seem to be getting worse and worse and it's been a year. My MRI and blood tests are all normal.

If you can, the best option would be to go see a physical therapist who specializes in vestibular rehab. There are several canals in the ear that could be affected, so it's important to know which one it is.

Don’t feel dumb, I had the same thing happen. I am still having issues with vertigo and some nystagmus 6 months after i had my first episode. I've subscribed , I have Vertigo as well and did this exact maneuver with my physiotherapist yesterday. I got so dizzy and nauseous to the point I got sick. It's now the following day and I still can't get out of bed, I feel so light headed and nauseous when I turn my head to the left or to the right. When I walk it feels like I'm walking on clouds or drunk walking as people say. My physiotherapist said it's normal to feel like this for a few days , is that true?

This one works way better than the eply at least for me it has always worked. I did the eply several times everyday and it made it worse. As soon as I did Dr Fosters half somersault, it went away. Make sure to not sleep on the troubled side for a week… also avoid caffeine or stress to not affect the crystals further…

I have been dealing with BPPV since late October 19. It first hit rolling over to my left side in bed and was terrifying. I had no idea what it was. This was followed by a day of nausea. But then the spinning just went away for a month. However, I was just lightheaded all the time. In the Beginning of December it hit again while driving. I managed to safely get off the road and limp back home slowly. That day I went to a Physical therapist and they diagnosed me with BPPV in the left ear. They did the epley, sent me home, I slept sitting up for two days. Again, the spinning stopped, but I was constantly lightheaded and just off. The day after Christmas was my best day! No dizzy at all, I felt like my old self! That night I slept for the first time on my left ear since this began, I woke up yesterday and when I looked down everything went into a spin again. My wife guided me through the Epley three times and while it got a little better each time, it was still there. This morning I did the Epley again and at first nothing on the left. Then it felt like something just broke free and I spun briefly on the left. I can actually notice my eyes twitching as I stair at a point on the wall. The right side was a very brief and tame spin. MY QUESTIONS: Doe this eventually go away? Do I try different maneuvers? Am I ok to sleep on my right "Non-affected" side? Thanks
@AskDoctorJo
@AskDoctorJo 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear it's not going away. Was the PT you saw a vestibular rehab specialist? That would really be the person to go see (again if needed). Depending on which canal it's in often determines what maneuver you should do, so that should really be determined by someone who can evaluate you in person.

If the eply is not working for you, it is not the right maneuver for you. Try doing this half somersault. I had the same problem on the left and for days I kept trying that eply and it only made it worse and more dizzy. I finally did this one and by the third time in a row the spinning and dizziness stopped. I have had vertigo for 15 years and this one always works. Eply not so much. Thank God for Dr Foster, the doctor that came up with this. Look for her video interview and watch the whole thing… you will be alright! Good luck!
