BPPV, or Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, can literally stop you in your tracks. Hopefully this vertigo treatment with Brandt Daroff exercises will help. But as always, make sure you are properly diagnosed because the symptoms can be coming from something more serious and dangerous. See Doctor Jo’s blog post about this at: www.askdoctorjo.com/vertigo-ep...
Exercises for BPPV will often increase your symptoms, and sometimes make you sick. However, each time you do them, the symptoms should decrease. Make sure you have a bucket just in case you get sick, and don’t plan on going anywhere right after you do these exercises just in case they make you feel a little worse.
These exercises are called Brandt-Daroff exercises. Start in an upright, seated position. Then move into a lying position on one side with your nose pointed up at about a 45-degree angle. Stay in this position for about 30 seconds (or until the vertigo subsides, whichever is longer). Then move back to the seated position and stay for 30 seconds. Repeat on the other side. This should be done 5 times on each side, 2 times a day holding each position for 30 seconds. It is recommended to do these for at least two weeks even if your symptoms go away before then.

Hi, Yesterday I was just folding the sheets slowly and the moment I bent down a little to rich a drawer I felt pain in my back on the right side around the waist and down a little.. The pain got extremely strong when I wanted to get up from bed at 3 am and all the household heard my screaming!! :( :( I couldn't sit, move, walk or even do anything movement without huge pain that even last when I didn't move. Now it is evening and the pain is less after using heating pad all the day, but still pain and still hard to walk or straighten my back completely! The pain is even in my right leg and foot until waist. This is the second time I got that in about 1,5 month, before that never happened. I live in NC and am new here in the country. I don't know where to go and who I ask. I barely trust doctors and absolutely don't want to go a bad one. Do you have any idea about what was the reason of that sudden pain and where to find the right place for help? Thank you! Show less

Some encouragement and info for all you struggling out there. I had vertigo for almost 3 months. I tried semont, semont plus, epleys, deep head hanging maneuver, gufoni, half somersault and this one is finally what helped. It might be a different one for you but know that one will help. Keep fighting.

I was desperate to stop the world from spinning, and I tried your exercise. I had tried many other maneuvers before and none of them worked so I was skeptical about the success. I did exactly what you said and for the first time on the left side, I did not feel anything, but on the right side, the room spun very fast. I had a bucket beside me just in case I got sick. Now back on the left side, still no spinning. After the 4th time on the right side, the room started to spin and very fast. After this, I had to stop and throw-up Not Fun, but then I tried both sides again and the spinning sensation diminished and I stopped the exercise. Later that day I noticed that no matter how I held my head, UP, DOWN left, or right I experienced no spinning. Thanks for helping me through this. ,

You are such a beautiful person for doing this. Not only have you completely resolved my anxiety and fear around this issue, you’ve taught me to manage and resolve it and prepared me for any re-occurrences. I was crying at 3am at my own house and had to get my parents to collect me because I didn’t have a clue what was happening and couldn’t walk straight. I was absolutely terrified. It’s a very unpleasant experience but the distress and anxiety makes it so much worse. Thank you for helping me.

This absolutely works! Tried it last night and was pretty freaked out, but today I was determined to do it. First time was brutal. Room was spinning when I laid down and when I sat up and it was really strong. By the third time I noticed it was less. The 4th and 5th time I felt a little off upon sitting, but nothing when I laid down. I feel so relieved right now. I will do it again tonight and continue to do it on a daily basis. I know she said for 2 weeks, but I keep having vertigo episodes, so why not incorporate these exercises (maneuvers) into my daily routine. Thank you! I watched a few videos with the exercise for vertigo, and you’re the only I saw that gave real caution, and possibilities of what could happen, ie: sickness from the motion, and the physical feelings afterwards. Good details count!!! I’m super sensitive, and the nauseous feeling is too acute for me to do your directed exercises 5X each in a row, so I’m going to have to spread them out until I’m not so nauseous with each one. Drs has told me before it’s allergies, and I usually get this around February to March off and on throughout the days and nights. This time I felt something give, and move inside my head around 1am as I was awake and tossing to my right side. Instantly the major vertigo happened. So I think drs have treated me wrongly for at least 15 years. All this time my inner ear was imbalanced with those crystals. At least it seems like that is what’s happening imo. Thank you so very much for this helpful video! Blessings for you🙏🏽💜

After my severe vertigo middle of the night 5 months ago the next day my wife drove me to the walk in clinic, the doctor gave me a medication and that medication made it well in few days. How ever from time to time I was always careful not to turn as I sleep as I was very scarred to get it again, about month ago I had a mini vertigo again when I woke up in the morning and for some reason I have turned my head that 45 degree that she is showing and guess what after a couple of hours of napping the vertigo is gone no more spinning. Since then most of the time I sleep in this 45 degree because not confident to turn all the way to my right and left. For the last week or so now I am sleeping on my sides but still cautious. Slowly getting there. But this 45 degree does worked for me.

Never knew vertigo is so common. I have been suffering from this since a month. I started this exercise but not with a 45degree head tilt. Since I was on heavy dose medication initially the dizziness was suppressed for 3 weeks and reoccurred. That’s when my doctor asked me to repeat the exercise in front of her and told me it should be a head tilt at 45 degree and to look for these youtube videos. The first round of this exercise is really hard to take. But slowly it settles. I hope when I continue this i’ll get better

Hi, Dr. Jo. Woke up with a nasty vertigo today. Tried the exercise for the first time. Made me sick during my third rep. When that happens, do I go back to completing the 5 reps. Or do I do the whole routine again later in the day?

The first time I tried this, I felt so sick that I gave up after twice on each side. After a week, as the vertigo wasn’t getting better, even with medication, I tried again. I get very dizzy on the one side, but today I’ve done the 5 a side twice. Maybe the medication has helped me endure it. But I shall now continue the exercises twice a day and am hopeful that this will sort me out. Thank you for this helpful video!

Best instructions! I am on day 2 of this exercise and I see the difference. The first time I did it, it was so bad I thought I was going to die...it increased my symptoms, made me sick and throw up. I was also lightheaded for about an hour after. I had done the mistake of doing the exercise an hour after dinner ! So my 2 cents - do these on an empty stomach - it may still make you nauseous but at least you won't throw up. With each day though the intensity of my symptoms have reduced and I feel much better!! Thank you @AskDoctorJo !!!

Does work! I had bvvp in the past which got out of control as I let my anxiety get in the way and didn’t know what I was dealing with then I used these exercises and it went away. Took awhile as I didn’t know about this treatment before hand. Recently came back as I put a a tip on my ear and that’s a big no no and because I knew how to get rid of it I started the exercises right away. Was gone within 4 days.

For a # of years, I would be "lightheaded" during any normal daily activity, and I would be able to alleviate the feeling by jerking my head. So, 2 years ago, I was diagnosed with BPPV, and the onset was alleviated by doing the Epley. Yesterday, the Epley did not work as well as it did when I had the episode last year. After 2 days, (today), I am still experiencing some vertigo, although I do feel 75% better. Gonna def try your exercise. Thanks for posting! BTW...Yesterday I had a really stiff neck, so I laid across my bed and hung my head over for about 3 min...I believe that is what brought on the BPPV yesterday. Maybe too long in that position, because directly after, I got vertigo.

After 2 weeks there was no end , it turns out I had water in the back of the ear drum, was rushed to the hospital and with two maneuvers my vertigo was completely gone and then I was on antibiotics for 2 weeks. My vestibular specialist told me to not do the Brandt-Daroff for longer than it takes for the vertigo to stop. Doing it for 2 weeks would cause it to become "habituated." I would welcome your input, Dr. Jo. Thank you for your very helpful videos on vertigo.

All the research I have read says to do it for 2 weeks, and there is no mention of habituation. Maybe ask your specialist for some research that shows you should stop once the vertigo stops. It's possible there is some newer research out there.
