Baker’s Cysts often come on in people suffering from chronic knee pain. It happens from excessive fluid development from inside the knee joint.
(There are exceptions, some people have a painless Baker’s Cyst)
If the fluid keeps accumulating, eventually the cyst pops and leaks down into the calf.
It can be painful and very concerning.
Healthcare providers usually don’t know what to do except offer pain medication and tell patients that the body will eventually absorb the fluid.
But what if the swelling does not go away?
What if the pain from the popped Baker’s cyst remains?
You cannot just rely on painkillers for the rest of your life. It’s not right to avoid movement and exercise for fear that the swelling will get worse.
There is a solution to get your knee health back on track. Dr. David shares it with you in this video.

I just want to say a huge thank you for these exercises which have worked like a dream. Back in June, I had a lot of pain and ultrasound showed a Bakers cyst and a tear in my calf muscle. I was in pain for weeks. Last week, my calf was really swollen, and discoloured. I was sent for another ultrasound (they suspected a DVT). Turns out the tear had healed but the cyst had burst. I was given no advice, just told the body would reabsorb the fluid in about six weeks. I was in agony and limping but found your video and did these two exercises almost non stop for about 3 days. I have walked my dog and gone shopping the past two days without any pain! Feel elated and released. Today is only one week after my scan. Thank you!

Really appreciate this, thanks so much. I saw a doctor for a lump that I subsequently discovered was a Baker's cyst. The doctor just diagnosed it as a "benign cyst" and told me I'd have to have elective surgery to get rid of it - she didn't have a clue! I figured it out but as it wasn't causing pain I went on running, doing yoga, meditating (cross-legged) and walking as normal. Six weeks later it burst and my calf and ankle are now huge; even walking is unpleasant. The advice re exercises to assist with drainage is invaluable.

Thank you for the information, I had a burst, out of the blue a couple weeks ago, I actually think mine ruptured after getting a cramp in my calf while sleeping. Woke up in agony, leg and foot swelled, then slowly turned all kinds of colors. Went to Er to make sure it wasn’t a DVT and they confirmed it was a Ruptured Bakers cyst and sent me home, recommending ibuprofen for the pain, lol. Two weeks in and my leg is horribly bruised, swollen and hard. My advise, if you even slightly suspect you have a Bakers Cyst, go see your Dr.

His videos are so helpful. I’ve gotten a few from him that really helps me. I do both of these already. I have a hip impingement in left hip and had a torn cartilage and torn ligament in right knee from 30 years ago(have formed a baker’s cyst doing hamstring curls, quad stretches, trying to strengthen my hamstrings)I do the first one to help for my knees and did the second one for my ankles (didn’t know it help the knees) but one will have to consider the Skeleton dance song. Foot bone connected to the ankle bone, ankle bone connected to the leg bone, leg bone connected to the knee bone and the knee bone connected to the thigh bone and the thigh bone connected to the hip bone. All of these body parts works together as one. If one bothering you the other will at some point in time. His videos have been really helpful self diagnosing myself according to the pain and he’s always on point. There is really nothing you can do about a baker’s cyst if one forms. I had to realize that I have to be patient with healing my body and not get so frustrated when I am trying to figure out what works for me when stretching and exercising. I have to be careful because I’m dealing with plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis in my right ankle (went through slew of shoes trying to figure out what shoes worked for both. I use to wear a size 9 but didn’t know according to my podiatrist, after 40, your feet grow a half inch bigger. Had to start wearing 9.5. When I purchased men shoes in a 7 (women 9, I thought going up a half size of 7.5 in men was great because of the 9.5 in women. Little did I know when you are a woman in 9.5, you have to purchase a 8 in men). This whole time when I am doing my mobility training, there were times I felt like I’m on the road to recovery but when I wore my shoes (7.5 in vapor max or the scorpion vapor max, they were creating more problems in my ankles, feet, knees and hip because they were too tight on my feet but I wouldn’t feel the pain shooting up from my ankle, to my leg, my knee and hip literally about hours after walking or standing in them. I can’t tell you how long I have done that {almost a year now}I now have to sell 11 pairs of Nike vapor max after discovering my shoes were causing the pain to go up my leg. I thank God for pain because without it, you can’t solve your problems. I know that may sound crazy because what person wants to be in pain. After almost a year of wearing a 7.5 in men and it should have been a 8, the other day I wore a pair of my vapor max (someone purchased those for me in a 8.5 in women and didn’t know it was that size. It was not even 30 minutes whether I was walking, standing, or driving I had to pull over and take those shoes off. When I wear the 7.5 in men, it gave me more time in the shoes but the walking, standing, or driving don’t help (feet swelling but not theoretically just from doing those activities, I had to take them off). Now that I have solved my problems, I am hoping for the best that a size 8 in men in my favorite tennis shoes along with a insole will help ease my pain and become pain free from plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis. This has been a long journey for me but was worth it figuring out my body and what works. Happy healing ❤️‍🩹 to everyone

I went to an orthopedic doctor because of swelling at the back of both my knees. The doctor didn't even tell me it's called Baker's cyst. I did my research afterward and found out the proper term. The doctor gave me Meloxicam for swelling and referred me to physical therapy. That was a year ago. The discomfort from the cysts keeps coming back, and the swelling is still visible. I am watching this and his other video to "self help". Thank you for all your videos. God bless.

Just came on to this video. Two years ago, I had a bodyboarding incident when a wave hit my knee and it hyperextended. I had a lot of tightness and feeling of instability in the whole joint. I started mountain biking shortly after and it made a world of difference… no more pain. We stopped biking several months ago as my husband had a shoulder injury. We were biking three days a week. Pretty much became sentry except weekend hikes. Two weeks ago we did a vigorous hike. The next day I need felt so tight. I used my husband hammer type chiropractic device in the back of my knee and hold down my calf. The next day felt as if a horse had kicked me. The orthopedist I saw thought it may be a bakers cyst that hurt burst. They took x-rays which showed nothing. In two days I go for an MRI. He also wants me to have an ultrasound. My leg bruised all down the calf behind the knee and at the time. My lower leg and knee swelled twice their size. I’m going to do the exercises you recommend. I have also decided to purchase a stationary bike. When I was 18 and a passenger on a motorcycle we were broadsided by a car. The impact site was my left ankle. Among other complications, it left my leg two inches shorter. I wear an inch and a half lift, so I know I have muscle imbalance. I will follow your exercises to help rebalance 50 years of compensation. Would it help or harm gently using my mini trampoline to work through the lymph drainage? Thank you so much for all of this valuable information!🙏🏻

I had one that busted in the middle of the night on way to bathroom. My doctor has sent me to a physical therapist and I'm starting to get relief. When it first happened, I couldn't even walk or stand. Good luck!

Was diagnosed with a bakers cyst 4 weeks ago. Went to the E.R. they diagnosed it and said it shouldn't be causing that much pain, sent me home. The next day my knee blew up 4 times the size the pain was off the charts. Went to an ortho. He aspirated my knee not the bakers cyst and said the bakers cyst is not the problem.. after the aspiration my foot and ankle blew up like a balloon. Haven't been able to walk since. Had to go back to the E.R. with intense pain and swelling. They aspirated the ankle, the next day. the hospital called and said I had psuedogout. That has gone down. But the knee feels like my knee cap is going to blow off. Just wondering by listening to this video if the bakers cyst ruptured and this is the reason why I still can't walk. It is where it started. 🤔

Hi Acbound, Wow, that sounds like an incredibly tough situation! 🥺 It must have been so frustrating and scary to go through all that, especially with the pain and swelling you experienced. It’s great that you were persistent in seeking help, even though it took multiple visits to the ER and the ortho. From what you've described, it does sound like there could be more going on than just the Baker's cyst. While we're not able to give a definitive answer without a full evaluation, a ruptured Baker's cyst can sometimes cause severe pain and swelling in the leg, similar to what you're describing. The fluid from a ruptured cyst can travel down the leg and even cause the foot and ankle to swell, which might explain some of your symptoms. Psuedogout could also be contributing to the pain and swelling, as it involves the formation of crystals in the joint that can cause intense pain and inflammation. It's definitely a lot to handle at once! We would highly recommend a Virtual Consultation with one of our doctors. Our Virtual Consultations are conducted similarly to a Zoom call, and we will send you a link that will automatically connect you with one of our doctors. This consultation will allow us to gain a better understanding of your condition, discuss your medical history, and provide personalized guidance tailored to your needs. Once you have purchased the Virtual Consultation, we recommend sending us an email with your questions, any records you would like to discuss, and a brief description of your medical history at least 24 hours before your appointment. This will help us prepare and ensure we can address all your concerns during the session. Please refrain from sending this information before purchasing for security purposes. After your Virtual Consultation, you will receive a recording of the session, and you will have 30 days from the date of the consultation to ask any follow-up questions regarding your session. You can email us your questions, and our doctors will get back to you at their earliest convenience. Once you purchase your consultation, our scheduling coordinator will contact you to find out the best time and date that works for your appointment. To learn more about our Virtual Consultations, including cost, please click here: www.epmanualphysicaltherapy.com/virtual-visit/ In the meantime, we have a baker's cyst playlist that might be helpful for you to determine if it might be the baker's cyst that might be the issue. You can check it out here: “Baker’s Cyst Help” kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mauCV7_gEEntBWMvGcQ5OyE&si=9XQImz7xL0xsw3M4 Take care, and hang in there!

My husbands cyst is so big and it keeps bursting and he’s in so much pain. All the ortho has done is a cortisone injection and it didn’t help at all.

Hi Dawn, it's terrible to hear that your husband has been suffering so bad! They can be very painful and unfortunately, we hear quite frequently that the cortisone shots don't help that much but for some people they do. It's important to find the root cause of why he is experiencing the baker's cyst which is most often a muscle imbalance stemming from the glutes. We have a playlist for Baker's cyst he might find beneficial: “Baker’s Cyst Help” kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mauCV7_gEEntBWMvGcQ5OyE&si=9XQImz7xL0xsw3M4 Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. It’s best to do these exercises every day throughout the day. Aim to tire out the muscle without losing form or control. Consistency is key. Always avoid working through pain; soreness and mild discomfort are normal, but pain is not. We hope he feels better soon! If the playlist seemed to help we would encourage him to look into our Knee Arthritis Recovery program. The Knee Arthritis Recovery Program is designed to help people have the best chance of avoiding unnecessary surgery, injections, or having to rely on pain medications. This course guides people through exercises and stretches that target key body parts that have the greatest potential to prevent or help with knee conditions like osteoarthritis, meniscus tears, ligament injuries, cartilage problems and other knee conditions. To learn more please click this link: epmanualphysicaltherapy.com/knee-arthritis-recovery-program We wish you all the best in your road to recovery. We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙌 Please take care!
