Way before Pentatonix. Way before KZbin. And even before MTV (if you remember what that was). And the beginning of the video is a riff on the Brady Bunch (look it up). And *both* girls have amazing voices individually - but it’s absolute magic when they sing together.

ABBA is one of the most popular groups in the history of recorded music, they have an amazing discography with dozens of singles and were active between 1972 - 1983. This is mid-career song released in 1977... the video was recorded around that time as well. ABBA were music video pioneers long before MTV, creating promo videos for their songs as there was such a demand for them to be everywhere in the world at once. The name ABBA comes from their initials of their first names: (A)nni-frid Lyngstad, (B)enny Andersson, (B)jorn Ulvaeus, (A)gnetha Fältskog. If you check out some of their other stuff, try Knowing Me, Knowing You, Fernando, Summer Night City, Gimme Gimme Gimme, I mean, there is so much great stuff, you cannot go wrong.

They did videos so they could be seen. Agnetha hated to fly. Hated be away from her child. So she won't travel as much as the band wanted. To keep their faces out there they shot silly videos. It was a way to be seen.

And because of these videos, ABBA were able to get a needed jump start. When Australia television got hold of them and started playing them (Mamma Mia, I Do, I Do, I Do, and SOS and Fernando) and Australians went wild for ABBA, putting them on the charts and getting other country's to take notice. The rest is history. But yes, to these videos were made pretty much after they were recorded so that traveling could be cut down, especially around this time. Agnetha (the blond) had just had her second child and didn't want to be away from her kids too long. So the videos served this purpose of getting them out there visually, without them having to travel.

'Promotional films', as they used to be called in the 70's, had been around since the late 60's for popular artists, usually shown on TV shows when the artists in question were unable to attend the studio to perform, 'live', in the studio, usually because they were on tour or simply couldn't make it in time. They were generally made shortly after the songs in question were made to be the singles from off the albums they were on. ABBA in particular were quite innovative with their style of presentation, when most other artists would basically have them, 'performing', to the song on a stage.

Thanks for the reaction. ABBA was two couples from Sweden. Agnetha (blond) & Bjorn (guitar) and Benny (piano) & Anni-Frid (dark hair). The first letters of their names spell ABBA. The guy's wrote the hit's and the girls sang them. They didn't invent ''Promotional Video's' but they sure took them to the next level in the 70's. Kinda setting up the whole 'Music Video' thing in the 80's. Great band to get to know. Ton's of songs of every genre too. Both couples divorced in the end and they stopped recording together.

The videos were made at the same time of the song release. In fact ABBA is one of the first groups to use "Music Videos". They were in Sweden and the "video" was a good way for the rest of the world to hear their music. I really don't understand your question. Why would it be impossible to make music videos in the mid 1970's? I think lights and electricity and cameras were around then. Not sure though. Maybe if we are lucky some Archeologist will discover some "ancient scrolls" to verify it. By the way the "girls" sang the songs. The "guys" wrote the music.

I'm not sure, but i thought that the Beatles were the first to make a music video. They were sheduled to to appear on two shows at the same time, so they pre-recorded the songs for one. Later they went all out with the really weird 60s psychedelic cartoons. (^.^)

@@LeafHuntress I'm not sure if a prerecorded performance is a "music video". I'm sure there were lots of prerecorded stuff in the early days because everything was not "live". But sounds fine to me. Good morning to You thanks for this reaction, I enjoy with your reaction ABBA it's versatility in a lot of genres and styles of music, or kind of different emotions They was from Sweden, two couples: Agnetha (blonde singer) & Björn (guitarist songwriter) Benny (pianist songwriter) & Anni Frid (brunette singer) "Take a chance on me" (1978) is one of their best ABBA hits in all the world, the most sailing song of ABBA in U.S. (more than Dancing Queen), #3 in Billboard U.S. and the seven #1 in UK Charts This is one of few song than the vocals are more extensive than the music (They begin 'a capela' and singing at the end) the blonde Agnetha is the lead vocal, her voice is so powerful, in perfect armonies and chorus with Anni Frid (much known as 'Frida') in co-leads vocal (and the boys in back voices singing repetitive the frase 'take a chance, chance') Agnetha & Frida have fantastic voices and harmonies together Agnetha is soprano Frida is mezzo soprano and together made a 'three voice' the guitarist Björn got the idea while jogging, by the sound of the footsteps he interpreted t-k-t t-k-t and adapted it to "take a chance", and so the song was born Although it is a disco pop, it is like a constant and happy march, captivating, cloying and addictive ABBA recording between 1972/82, have more than 20 worldwide hits, your major succes was in Europe and Australia ABBA is greatest specialy in UK, they have a fantastic serie of 18 singles Top 10 consecutives between 1975/1981, included eight #1 : 1976: Mamma Mía, Fernando, Dancing Queen 1977: Knowing me knowing you, The name of the game 1978: Take a chance on me 1980: The winner takes it all, Super trouper but ABBA begin to be famous when They win the classic Eurovisión Song Contest in UK 1974 with your iconic masterpiece "Waterloo" after these, Your first worldwide hit: #1 in UK and half Europe and South Afrika, #6 in US, #7 in Canadá, #4 in Australia, Top 10 in the rest of Europe and several countries I give you the link of these live perfomance in competition: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXfWh5iDr5Z5a8U (You did a reaction to all Eurovisión winner, but I think it is better that You did specialy "Waterloo" in UK 1974) Another good suggestion is "S.O.S." (1975), the second worldwide hit to ABBA after "Waterloo" to see the musical versatily of ABBA I hope You continue soon with more ABBA reactions My best regards from Buenos Aires Argentina South América

Many bands in the 70's started making promo videos for their songs and before that. ABBA were great pioneers of this and many of their videos were directed by lasse Hallstrom who has since gone to be a major film director and producer. In the early years Anni-frid had two children in early teens and Agetha had two very young children so she especially was reluctant to travel very often. So every single had a promo video which became more slick and well crafted as they them selves progressed. One of the best is the video to The Day before You Came not a big hit as it was just before they separated but has since become recognised as a great piece. Mamma Mia the musical was a stage show before a film and was totaly controled by Benny and Bjorn as all their music is.

I love your reaction but it also shows how the USA is mostly focused on itself. Partly due to its cultural power, that we know most of the music from the states but you know hardly any music from the rest of the world. This song like most ABBA songs are evergreens in Europe. And this was actually produced in the 1970s. The Beatles started to make music videos at the end of the 60s, and many artists like David Bowie followed. If you want to see a more recent brilliant European (Belgium) artist than please checkout Stromae. He was famous all over Europe and parts of Africa. And tried his luck in the USA but only had succes in Canada.
