Ron ,,,I am 68 have have read articles in all the popular magazines you have wrote for ,,also I watch your you tube videos and have since you started. For a guy who try’s to help so many younger and new shooters you sure take your fair share of badgering, some of the comments I’ve read leave me wondering where these guys are coming from ,,it’s just a podcast with helpful information about shooting and hunting and I wish people would take the time to appreciate it as such. Thanks for all the help and interesting stories and experiences ,,and with all the trouble in today’s world I sure don’t see anyone else trying to help folks out the way you have.

An anecdotal story concerning rifle bore cleaning of copper. When I first bought a true copper cleaner, I didn't pay close attention to the instructions. I cleaned my barrel for two days straight and I couldn't get a patch without blue on it. That's what color the copper turns from the chemical reaction. I just figured I had a bunch more copper fouling than I thought. After a few more days of cleaning, I read the directions again. I noticed then that it said use a nylon brush. I had been using a bronze brush. It finally hit me, bronze is mostly copper with a little tin added in. The cleaner was dissolving my bronze brush! I would never get a clean white patch using the bronze brush. I felt a little stupid for a while. However, I did have a really clean barrel!

Ron on the 38-55 wcf they have 2 different types of barrel diameter and chamber lengths. The Win 94 uses the 2.08 case length with the .375 dia bullets. The Marlin uses .380 dia bullets with 2.125 case length. If you purchase a firearm in the 38-55 I would suggest that you do a cast of the chamber and slug the bore to determine the correct bullets and case length. They do not manufacture any .380 dia bullets for the 38-55 you'll need to cast your own if you have a .380 barrel. The 38-55 is an very fun rifle to shoot especially using black powder.

Hey Ron; you mentioned the Big Bore '94 .375 Winchester. Top eject. episode 375. (ironic) lol. My Dad saw one He REEEEEEEEALY wanted when they 1st came out. Mom said we couldn't afford it. Then surprised Him with it a month later for their anniversary. He Loved that rifle, & I wish I had it. I had the honor of using it on a couple hunts over the years. 1 200+ black bear at close range. 1 blacktail at about 50 yards, & to my pleasant surprise, a hefty elk at around 80 yards. It was a quartering away shot that was a double lung shot & actually passed through after shattering the right shoulder. I dearly Miss my Dad. AND that rifle.

Love watching the videos, but just a couple of things, give my .308 a little more credit, and buy more targets! Sorry had to say it! What I really had to say was, it is great to see you give credit to the gun companies where it is due for making some really good firearms at a lower price point where people can actually afford to still buy a good gun without having to take out a loan to do it. Every hunting rifle I own is a low end Savage, with the last two that were bought both being the Savage Axis XP's, one in 308 Winchester for myself, and one in .270 Winchester for my wife. Both of which are MOA shooters, and work perfectly for these Alabama Whitetail's. Keep up the good work, thanks for all of the info you pass along!

Ron I have seen test load shooting shots have changed after a few rounds it got better. Different bullets and different powders leave a different residue behind. Had a good shooting load worked up. Shot a different load to try didn't shot as good as my original load, so went back to my original load it didn't shot as good, shot a few more rounds of it and watched the group tighten back up about five rounds later it was back

i, for one, quite like it when Mr. Ron pounds his gums. Maybe not even every time. Say 85% and upwards of the time. But the amount of stuff I’ve learned in the last year watching Spomer and Backfire and others far outweighs the occasional dud video. And I think most video creators are aware that they can’t make a banger of a video (pun intended!😅) every single time. That said, I am always glad when Ron or his wife give him the sour grapes commenters to read so that me and other fans can laugh at their idiocy which Mr. Spomer is quite too polite to call it out for what it is. So he looks at the camera with that twinkle in his eye and the wink wink and let’s us troll the guy of our own volition🎉🎉!

Targets are reused at Camp Perry all the time. They just use white and black pasters to cover the old holes. Works good enough for a national competition. Works good enough for me.

I knew a couple bothers that built bench rest rifles and would buy match grade full diameter barrels usually.224 bore diameter and would do their own threading chambering and crowning.They would find one barrel would often shoot much better than others and said if you shot out that barrel and had it machined to a larger caliber it would again be a superior shooter??

It is still a mystery why some barrels seem to be so much more accurate. For decades, barrel makers have been trying to figure out how to reliably make those "hummer" barrels that shoot everything well.

That freedom bell is a fair approximation of barrel harmonics. The tone (musical note) can be adjusted by changing dimensions in much the same idea as load development changes the frequencies of a barrel's harmonics. (yes harmonics is the word you are looking for).

Another harmonic example: If you have a guitar string openly vibrating, and touch the string at the proper interval it will change the pitch to a harmonic relative of the open note, but it has to be at a specific interval to work, This could explain some of the difficulties that are found in 'tuning' a rifle barrel, or loading for accuracy.

I'v noticed latelly talk about barrel cooling when target shooting in summer. BUT no one talks about what the temp is when hunting Late Fall/Winter. The Air/Barrel temp is Freezing. You got a Rifle sighted in at Summer/Early Fall temp. What about Point of Impact Shift in Freezing Temps?? Sighting in a Rifle by freezing the barrel in Summer for winter hunting makes SENSE?? Runing air through the barrel if hot ??, or having a Cooler full of Ice to place the barrel between shots??. One of those styrofoam frozen food food shipping boxes, Hole with a plastic sleeve to drive the barrel over ice??

You are welcome to experiment with that stuff, Willy, but I suspect that the differences you discover will be minimal. Cold does slow down muzzle velocity by decreasing the heat, thus energy, of the powder burn (with some new temperature insensitive powders minimizing this.) The denser air increases drag, thus increasing drop, too. But most of this can be calculated via a ballistic calculator. Beyond 300 yards or so it starts to matter for hunting.

Either the 150, 160- or 170-grs. will do just fine. The 30-30 is forgiving and a proven deer killer with all bullet weights. No huge ballistic advantage in one vs. the other, so roll with the 160 as a perfect compromise. Best of luck and have fun!

Hey ron, I've been looking through the backlog and haven't heard you give justice for the revolver cartridges for hunting. With the right choice of ammo, the 44 mag can get over 1200 foot pounds, and I've seen buffalo bore ammo that gives a little more juice than 1400 foot pounds. And with stout loads, the 500 Mag can get over 3000 foot pounds. ( that's in a pistol.... Ouch.) And of course if i have to talk about revolvers... tii armories re chambers the magnum research long frame 500 Magnums to 500 bushwacker, which can deliver a tremendous 5000+ foot pounds, more so than that featherweight 458 you were shooting a little bit ago. But along with this information, i would like to hear your thoughts about taking rifles chambered in the magnum revolver cartridges ( 454 casull, 480 ruger, and the 460/500 s&w mag.) to Africa. That 454 has taken almost, if not everything in africa in a pistol... So why not put it in a lever action?

Gee, Maxwell, I don't know. 5,000 f-p from a 500 S&W Mag. seems a stretch. The most powerful factory loads and recommended handloads generally top out at less than 3,000 f-p. I'm sure you could exceed that in a longer barreled rifle, but 5,000? I'm not familiar with the 500 Bushwhacker. The 458 Lott, however, exceeds 6,000 f-p. We must also remember that the flat noses of those handgun rounds add drag which slows them quickly and wastes energy downrange. Regardless, I wouldn't want to be hit by any of them.

@@RonSpomerOutdoors oh I see, the 500 s&w can only max out to about 3000 to about 3300 f-p, Aria ballistics has a type that gets about 3200 if I remember correctly. The five hundred bushwhacker on the other hand.... If I remember correctly, tii armories got a 450 grain bullet over 2400 fps.( Max power out of a 10 inch barrel they give is 5500 foot pounds...)

Here is some good advice from someone that has been shooting, reloading and hunting big game for 36 years... Pick a good, heavy for caliber bullet/load combo and use that for everything you hunt with that rifle. So like 30-06 180 grain federal power shock for deer, hogs, antelope, elk, moose, whatever...then, if you hunt coyotes, pick one load for another rifle in another chambering, say a 223 rem and a 55 grain varmint bullet that you like. Then just check your scope mounts for tightness before you put the gun away everytime and you will probably never have to clean the barrel again and your point of impact and group size will only change with temperature and elevation... There are a lot of people selling barrel cleaning products that will tell you otherwise and they lurk on comments sections like this and troll people like me... But whatever...

Stop gripping. The 7mm prc velocity drop is a minor and insignificant issue for most shooters. Hornady has a small markup on its ammunition to stay competitive. I am willing to bet they had already printed a thousand boxes or more when they were forced to switch powders. They faced the problem of charging more per box to pay for new boxes of ammo with the correct velocity listed, or using the existing boxes and keeping the original price. They made the best choice for their customers.

The Big Bore 94 in 375 Winchester will shoot 38-55 ammo, and the chambers were made to shoot both.

The brass dimensions are the same. The difference is that a 38-55 is a low pressure round. It was originally a black powder cartridge.

The main issue for many is that the major ammo suppliers will only produce ammo to the SAAMI standard. If you hand load, you can take advantage of the improved features and load heavier, higher-BC bullets. What is the max length of the ammo that fits in the magazine for this rifle? Thanks

Too many fiddle-farters out there. A Canadian sniper in WW2 shot a 303 with scope. The rifle had a 3 inch grouping at 200 yards. I never cleaned my 7.62 FNC1A1 in West Germany for 6 months, having fired 15,000 rounds on our NATO rifle team. No problems.

Some poor advice concerning rifle accuracy there Ron. A sheet of paper is not enough of a freefloat. Not even close. You want a "generous" freefloat, and 1 sheet of paper has a thickness of about .004". That is not good. Also you mention how to tighten action screws (you refer to them as "bedding screws"). You say, don't tighten the rear screw too much, or it could warp or twist the receiver and affect accuracy. That is absolutely false, especially on a properly glass bedded rifle. That will NEVER happen on a properly glass bedded rifle. Keep in mind, if action screw torque has that much of an effect on rifle accuracy, you have a SICK RIFLE. Does that make sense to you?

Makes sense, Imbear, and I thought I mentioned that the rear tang screw tension can have that effect on a poorly bedded action, i.e. lower in back than front. But if I forgto to say the, thanks for bringing it up. And, yes, with some stocks additional free space between barrel and stock is important. Traditionally (with fine walnut stocks) one did not want, for cosmetic reasons, large gaps to show. Pragmatic shooters today don't seem to care about this.

@@RonSpomerOutdoors I hang multiple targets at one time I label each target for the round. I’m going to be shooting. There’s really not hard. It just takes a little bit of want to lol. Keep you organized and you don’t have to wonder if you’re looking at the right group or not. Most targets have a center target and one at each corner so you can get five groups out ofone target hang two targets shoot 10 groups.
