Epson Inkjet Printer Firmware Update - 3rd Party Cartridge Not Recognized (1 of 2)

How to workaround the new Epson firmware update so 3rd party ink cartridge will work.
Basically, look for a small silver strip on the corner or edge of the chip. Just a little silver/grey rectangle. It's not always in the same place. The brand I use has it in the top right corner. Make sure to scrape it away thoroughly in the middle or it won't work (the first time I tried I didn't scrape away enough and it failed, then I scratched more off and that did the trick.)

This even worked from a European XP 7100 33 and 33XL to a U.S. 410 and 410XL after you swap the chips (keep your empty cartridges and swap chips from those - it may even work vice versa)

I was going to try the hack of scratching off the carbon but the cartridges I use don't have it. I use ones from EZ Ink for the Epson WF 645. I guess I'll have to try the firmware reset.

Hmmm. Cool hack. Unfortunately, my brand FastInk doesn't seem to have a "something" to scratch off. Really mad that I hit the update firmware button. Wish there was a quick way to undo my update.

Yes you can downgrade the firmware. Instructions on how to do it are available here on youtube.

Hi,i had epson SC T3160X(ink tank) A1 plotter. after request maintenance box replacement n i replace with new one.the display not recognized n still showing replece maintenence box. I try in on or off positions still the same, also turn of power cord expecting hang is off ....still not working. Do you have tips for this issue.. Many thanks..

It worked perfectly for me. Unfortunately my printer did an automatic update (forgot to cancel it) and this tip no longer works ... Do you have a solution?

Hi, sorry to hear that the new update wrecked things. I don't know of any other solution. This was the only one I found when researching how to get around their update scam.

This makes no sense. A company sells you a "carbon line" style cartridge and expects you to scratch it off to work? I don't think so.

Don't be silly. Nobody should *have* to do this but Epson are a bunch of scumbags who introduced a firmware update to prevent the use of non-Epson ink cartridges. This is a work-around. The manufacturer of the cartridge did not expect people to have to do this or they probably would have designed it differently.
