I really enjoyed the tour of Kinney Camp, thanks, Tristan. It is so interesting to see how the ranchers and pioneers lived so remote and self-reliant. I have lived and worked (cowboyed) at places just like this that are still in use to this day. At the Kinney Camp homestead, the small stone building is a tack shed. That is where they stored all their wagon harness, horse saddles, blankets, bridles, pack-saddles, and other horse related tack...

I always enjoy your videos - but this is the first one where the roughness of the road was REALLY evident - I know you are often on rough roads but this one was really visable. I also love the way you narrate - you don't romantisize - I just feel like you are having a observational conversation with your audience - not over-produced but super watch-ablle - binge worthy lol. Historic properties on federal property are often times partially restored if funds are available. I have volunteered on several historic preservation projects in national forests to stabilize old buildings. The roof at Kinney camp according to an article I read was restored by federal work crews in 2002 which explains it’s good condition. I always enjoy your videos and wish I could do more of the same type of traveling that you do.

My 1980 Jimmy had a roof rack that flew over the hood on a particulary bad road out of Barstow. Believe me you were lucky your rack went behind you.

When I was trucking, whenever I had to drive across the Green River Gorge in North Carolina I'd drive across in the center of both lanes I was so skeered! Those buildings were exceptionally well built!

Man I miss my Burb! I had a '98 Suburban 4x4 with 6" lift & 35's for 12 years. Loved that beast. It was like driving a sofa, especially off road. So dang comfortable despite its size! Looked like you didn't air down the tires & I'm guessing the spare tire was just too heavy for that rack with the too old brackets. Airing down makes the ride so much smoother! Thanks for the nice video.

@@stevepowsinger733 well, yes of course! I carry a portable air compressor in a bag that hooks to the battery. Most all my off road/Jeep friends either have a portable or on board air compressor. If you wheel or overland on a regular basis having a compressor is a necessity.

Suburbans are good vehicles. Be careful out there you don't drive into any cliffs. That gorge looked deep. Makes you realize there's a higher power besides ourselves out there. I'm glad you had a great time exploring out there despite the few mishaps.

It's amazing that when the rack came off it didn't take the fan out with it. Looks like the brackets were glued together also. Wonder if you were able to get to the bottom of the gulch if there were some fish in the stream? Thanks for sharing your video with us>

The fan is pretty low-profile and is underneath the basket. I didn't check out the "interior" of the gulch, so I can't say if there are fish in there or not. Maybe next time! Thanks for watching.

Hey I've been all through that area been a few years now though. Willow creek hot springs is my favorite of all the ones ive visited . I haven't been into sheldon very much but definitely want to it is so remote out there! There are many petroglyphs out in the hart mountain area. I've spent a lot of time researching them. Some that are closer to main roads have been vandalized over the years but there are many places like the rim rocks you found that are untouched. They are almost surreal to visit when you are out there miles and miles from anyone or anything. Thanks for sharing your adventures and being cautious with the location content you post great video!

Too much good stuff in this one. I absolutely love that SE Oregon desert scenery, the old homestead was amazing, and the mile+ of petroglyphs was incredible, but I'd have to say that insane gorge was probably my favorite bit. Also loved the transparent honesty of showing yourself struggling with the spare tire etc. I would not want to have to get that thing off the roof if I had a flat. The rear bumper spare tire mount you mentioned seems like a wise option. The space inside that Suburban is astonishing. I might struggle to return to a RAV4 after a week of that. :-)

The gorge was really cool. I would have flown the drown around there, but that's a no-no on the wildlife refuge, unfortunately. Would have been fun to walk through it a bit, too. And believe it or not, I have no problems with going back to the RAV4. If space was the thing I wanted most, I'd be in a van! As long as there's enough room for me and my stuff, I don't care too much how big the space is.

Super fascinating! the old ranch really showed the resourcefulness of the early ranchers in the area. i did notice that there didn't seem to be a source of water! do you have any idea where they were able to get water? lucky that you were able to discover the rack issue before driving very far. as heavy as the tire is, the charring of the road compounded the weight and broke the supports. part of the learning curve with off roading. really enjoyed the video of the cliff art. appreciate your desire to preserve the area from those who would destroy the historical significance.

At the Kinney Camp, that cellar had a stovepipe coming out of the roof; my guess would be that was a dugout and was the residence before the ranch house was built. Dry environments really help to preserve structures. I have a friend that was a ranch manager in Montana and the horse barn there was the first building constructed on the ranch (probably built in the early 1900's) and was still in regular use the last time I was there. It was simply raw logs and timbers and had a beautiful bronze patina from the exposure over the years.

Pollard fences have an interesting history. They used to trim trees so as to produce the best and straightest sticks for the purpose of fence building. Now when you see a Pollard tree, you can't look at it the same

10:54 I was going to say, those buildings must have been lived in pretty recently, but doing some research, shows that they were actually abandoned in the early 1930s. Then restored about 20 years ago when they put the new roof on. So it's kind of hard to tell what is new and what is original. I can see some evidence of old vandalism. 11:49 That door was kicked in at some point. Probably when it was still attached to the building. The windows were boarded up at some point, but the boards are mostly gone now.

Amazing, I did a similar trip back in Feb. 2020 right before lockdown and went to Steens Mountain first to see the wild horses, drive a lifted 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland so no probs with the roads. I next went to Crater Lake and then into the Redwoods of Nor Cal before heading to the Oregon Coast. Best trip in a long long time, so good I went back again in late October and did the Washington Coast too.

I noticed that you didn't give the location... when I was trying to historically place that type of fencing. I found a similar kind of fencing that was used in England and Ireland, but I'm thinking that there could have been done by a "first nation" community. Also, those branches could have come from trees that grew beside the lake that is now dried up or brought in by horseback from when those mountains may have had trees. Anyway, I will have to follow your clues or go to your other site in order to continue to get a clue as to when those buildings were first used. ( was it a ranch?) Those thick stone walls also interest me as to when they were built . In any case, I'm curious!

The location of those buildings is not a secret. He put it on the screen. It's Kinney Camp, Nevada. They are old ranch buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s. They were restored to the current condition about 20 years ago.

I think the most impressive bit was Thousand Creek Gorge - I had a look at that area on Google Earth, and within about five miles of that spot, there appear to be dozens of utterly unique formations that call out for exploration. And the gorge itself - Whoa!

We had a bolt come loose on our chipper-shredder, and it did a real number on it. The moral of the story is always check before and during use. Constant vibrations can loosen anything, like lawn mower blades. Thankful that it didn’t happen on a highway, could have gone thru someone’s windshield.

5:35 - I was just looking at the roofrack and spare set up in the previous scene, and thinking about the effort it would require to get that spare down if you needed to change a tire, when it transitioned to this scene and timecode, and noticed something was very amiss.

Just south of Sheldon is the black rock desert there's a camp called stevens camp on the high rock trail very historic place its a building first come first served a great spring running out of the mountain it was a stopping place for the pioneers check it out i stayed there two days awesome 👌

Did you stop into Virgin Valley Warm Spring campground? You can get fresh well water and take a clean shower in the 83F spring water. All free! You were within a mile of it when you crested the top of the Thousand Creek gorge.

You may be mistaken about the oldest petroglyphs, the references I find are for Winnemuca Lake/Mud Lake and are 10000 to 14000 years old and are on boulders. They are on an Indian Reservation too.
