I feel like people are starved for good equestrian/horse games nowadays that you have grifters taking advantage of that and stringing people along just for a quick buck and a seemingly planned getaway afterwards too. No joke. This is something that's been more and more prevalent lately in the gaming industry as a whole but this is just yikes.

Any sort of niche community is very susceptible to this. Big companies won't make their games, so they rely on smaller, indie developers to do so. Unfortunately, this means they have to put their faith in all kinds of people - not all of them having the best intentions.

@@YTRattle If you've seen The Day Before fiasco that happened 5 months ago then this is nothing new or out the ordinary. In fact given the current state of gaming, i think it's more favourable to just stick to the old games and by that i mean horses included. Because games that were released years and years back like Petz Horsez for example are much more compelling than anything released in todays standards - most of what I've seen at least. Also keeping the expectations low is a good way to not end up disappointed in the first place.

When stuff like this happens, it makes me appreciate games like WolfQuest and Stardew Valley all the more. Not because of the genre of the game, but rather what the devs are doing. Creating a good-quality product, keeping up with bugs, listening to players, and keeping them regularly informed should be common sense. It's the foundation of what people want when they check out a new game. But companies like Star Stable and EA act like it's rocket science.

I'm a gamedeveloper and the sad truth is that horse games in general aren't as profitable as other types of games, while also being hard to develop. For the amount of work that goes into a 3D horsegame, you can make two less difficult games that peform better. So at the end of the day... they're all passion projects. This isn't nessecarily a bad thing, but limited funding, inexperienced people and a long development time don't exactly help the genre.

He already had a stable enough financial situation that he didn't need to work. Claiming he did it by himself is absolutely false. He was not working. He was NOT supporting himself. She was supporting his passion project. So to be like CA you'd need a rich romantic partner who's cool with you making your passion project for five years with no financial support. Since most people don't have that, they use Kickstarter or Patreon. You are not better than other devs for saying you'll refuse to get any financial help. From what you've said, you may not even be a dev, just someone who wants to dev and has no idea the realities of the work. You certainly aren't better than CA, who HAD financial backing and has actually produced the game he dreamed of. We need to kill the idea of the lone unsupported genius and realize "oh that guy literally just had someone else paying his bills and nothing to do but develop his game, no wonder he got it done'

It's why I wouldn't want to involve third parties (and to be strictly fair, I wouldn't want to do what CA did either and depend wholly on someone else, but at least he came out the other side -- and, presumably, his GF was there and aware of the happenings, not getting news from a Discord). I personally would feel horrible about involving a lot of people into realizing my dream and them leaving them holding an empty bag that I can't possibly fill because turns out my dream was not viable. That's what happens with many if not most Kickstarter projects. And yes, I'm a dev. Have been for 15 years. Which is 100% why I wouldn't want to involve strangers (a team of like-minded people who are there with me on the daily is one thing, it's the "strangers investing money and counting on me" that I have an issue with, and I'm perfectly aware that it's 100% a 'me' problem). If I ever did, I'd want to have at least *something* workable to show beforehand, and a reasonable expectation that I can take it to the finish. I'd die of anxiety otherwise.

I had been a furry for 20 years, and they have a sickening obsession to "that's alright!", "let's not bring drama into this obvious problem!" and more. Makes it really hard to call out people that are awful trash that might be, you know, abusers or PDF files. Everyone is trying to cover the sun with a finger and try to "be positive"...but truth is, anger is the answer you have when you are being treated unjustly, anger is a valid emotion and calling out someone (in this case the mods and the developers and more) IS valid, important and absolutely necessary for things to actually work! Just wanted to mention that at 4:47 you say the code was written in Java, but the screenshot shows that the code was written in (mostly) PHP and JavaScript. Java is not on that screenshot (JavaScript and Java are _very_ different languages!) Of those two, PHP is the relevant outdated language, and it makes up about 41% of the project. Though PHP is still used in many places, it's being phased out for JavaScript and modern JS-based frameworks (like React, which is what they decided to switch to.) It's small, but accuracy re. coding things is very important to me so I wanted to mention that :] I would wager that their thought process was that fully-JavaScript code would be more maintainable long-term, especially if the new team didn't know much PHP and if they were already scrapping most of the project. Can't say I agree with their decision, though! (I also have to wonder if it was a case of "I'm new and I can do this better so I'm going to redo it all", which can happen sometimes when you get new heads of development.) In any case, sounds like the project was being run unprofessionally overall, so I suppose I'm not surprised it went down. Once you're on Kickstarter and/or dealing with thousands of dollars in funding, it's not just some little part-time project anymore and shouldn't be treated as such. Sucks that it happened though. Hopefully everyone is able to get their money back!
@retro-porygon7 ай бұрын
PHP isn't an outdated language by itself though, it is still actively maintened and solid when used in a framework like Laravel. It just has bad fame thanks to the inumerous websites running old and vulnerable versions of PHP (thanks, wordpress) It's like judging modern javascript by how many websites still uses jquery
@SalamanderMoon7 ай бұрын
@@retro-porygon That's fair, thanks for pointing that out! I was mostly trying to stick to the same wording in the screenshot of the Discord message (where they did call the language outdated, though Rattle substitutes that for "unusable"), and (admittedly) parroting professors of mine who deride it as outdated compared to JS. I'm not sure if Equuest was using a modern framework (at which point I see little reason to scrap _all_ of the code) or just raw PHP, but I suppose we won't ever know that for sure.
@retro-porygon7 ай бұрын
@@SalamanderMoon I get your point! PHP is very infamous and I did have a similar experience with professors and developers alike talking badly about PHP, it is memed like hell after all and I used to join in the making fun until I actually decided to learn it and try it myself. As it turns out, PHP is very popular for small freelance projects and volunteer gigs for non-profit organizations and can be a solid choice for modern web development, it's just that years ago it was what we had for web server development and as a result there's a lot of bad, unclean and unsecure legacy PHP code on the internet. Cleaning up and migrating legacy code is not a fun task so that might be why people rather avoid languages with such reputation. I even hear about people avoiding listing for Java jobs for that exact same reason. Nowadays we also have a lot of other sophisticated options for back-end development (Java with Springboot, NestJs with Typescript, Ruby-on-rails and much more) which are more popular and learning resources are much more accessible than decades ago. Developers are very passionate when it comes to defending their chosen languages and sometimes put all other languages down. As for Equuest, no clue. No language, framework nor skilled team of developers could save bad management

I have probably commented on this before, probably in the last video, but yeah. Switching your product from one technology (programming language or framework) to another, once the code has been majorly done, is a HUGE undertaking, and not something that should be considered lightly, no matter what the situation is. It can lead to huge delays, a whole new slew of issues and lots of other drawbacks. It's literally the reason why so many companies have products or services that use the so called "legacy" code, a.k.a. technology or practices that are not common or used anymore, but the product has been around and developed so much it would be too big of a hassle to refactor it into something new. Prime example would be projects that still utilize Classes from React (JavaScript based framework). Classes, though still useful have gone out of style and use quite some time ago, but you still see a lot of legacy code using them, and if you happen to be assigned to work on such a project, you will have to learn how to work with it, not just switch it out for something else.
@medea277 ай бұрын
100% - the issue of legacy systems is huge in the corporate space, as technology moves much faster than projects can deliver on industry trends. What a lot of people don't realise is that in the 12-24 months it takes to get projects off the ground & moving you're already working with "dated" technology, and the longer your development time the older that core language/framework will be at release... making your initial tech decisions critical. Even migrating work between versions of the same software can create all sorts of issues that take a lot of time & money to iron out... that's why so many devs are choosing to still release their games in Unreal Engine 4 despite UE5 being out for two years. There are a lot of secondary considerations that factor in, like the minimum PC/console performance requirements & missing the market trends if it takes too long to get the game released. So I wince every time I hear a project like this talking about moving or migrating from one technology to another after a significant amount of the work has been done.... it's never simple, straightforward or pain-free. Never.

Any company claiming they're making a game, but asking for money and free work should not be trusted. Also. DON'T WORK FOR FREE. I understand how people want to support games they're interested in, but PLEASE. Games are still a business. Never work for free. Yep. THIS is precisely why I do not support games anymore: Even if it looks like everybody is throwing in effort, things can still turn to poop and your money is someone else's to enjoy for a starbucks coffee or traveling around. And games are not the only thing this can happen with, also comics and other stuff. I think ONE single person being in charge is never a good idea for these things btw. Especially not if the person is making it clear that getting things done in a timely manner with the goal of actually making progress in a certain time frame and more is simply NOT priority for them. Throw in the fact there were many things happening supposedly and things getting delayed and then sudden 'vacation' pictures being found: This just yells scamming in the most blatant ways. I would not be surprised if this was another one of those people that found the idea nice, suddenly noticed how much work and RESPONSIBILITY is coming their way and then they saw the money and thought: Well, not my problem, let's abandon this~. This would NOT be the first time and it will not be the last. And this is precisely why I will never support games or other projects unless I fully know the person is capable of finishing their workload. This is such a giant shame. The art was so lovely and the fact we lack even good browser horsegames made me very excited for this. Also: If a project does not stress naming deadlines and/or alters the few it does indeed name: DO NOT SUPPORT IT NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU LIKE IT. This is SUCH a giant redflag. Please do not waste your money or give it to scammers to enjoy for luxuries in their life. It is not worth it. EDIT: I pity the other team members who really tried hard to make things work and got so betrayed. I hope it doesn't keep them from trying again someday. At least they tried, even if the person in charge did not. I wish them all the best.

I won't support another game on Kickstarter ever again. I now wait until a few weeks after a game releases before buying it, wait to see what the reviews are before I fork over my money.

It really had a good start- no thanks to Shoe- which is a shame. I really hope to see Ender in another project, they deserve another chance. I'm an avid Flight Rising player so I really want a horse browser game like it, I personally don't like Howrse.

Oh no, the game was coded in Java? Well that explains some of it. Especially the switch to unity. Java is just not a language for games. It worked for Minecraft (kinda) but it's not made for the job. This also puts a new light on the 19k lines of code, since Java needs a lot of lines to get anything done...

Was trying to see if there’s any decent (or improved) horse games and found this. I weep for this genre.

Please do another video (only if you feel like it tho!!) on Emerald Valley Ranch. They basically released two more (paid!) DLCs with stuff that should have been in the game at release (Arabian breed + foals), released a few more bug fixes, "fixed" the switch version (apparently it's still broken) then said outright that they're stopping development. That game is a complete joke.
@Whattheheckgives7 ай бұрын
Took them months to fix a game breaking bug they introduced to the PC version with the last dlc too, and right away they're into peddling their next game as soon as they bailed on EVR. I used to like Aesir, now I won't touch their stuff unless it's 75% off if at all.

At this point I am going to just get my old laptop fixed up and just work to collect all the old pc horse games because all of them are far better than pretty much every horse game that’s come out recently. Plus half of them look better, the horse models in the Horse Illustrated pc disc game were nicer than the models used in ETG now. Competitions at Rosemond (not to be confused with Legacy of Rosemond Hill), you could make your own horse and for some reason I remember you could make your own cross country courses. The Farnam racing game was awesome despite the flat pixilated graphics, the Horzes pc games were awesome too! Same with the Saddle Up: Time To Ride and Time to Ride: Saddles and Stables. One of those had a paranormal mystery arch to it that was super cool and unique.

Is it just me, or does taking the money of people to make a product automatically stop that project from being classified as "just for fun"? I mean, I'm learning to make a game just for fun - the difference is that I've not asked anyone else to fund this hobby...

That is almost the same with a 3d game that you grow from a baby dragon to an adult dragon but it’s not in full release because of the developer being a scammer and taking people money and not finishing the game.

I really love your videos, however I hate seeing people being scammed. I thank you for being the voice of this community. Your videos are great for this type of « raising awareness » on a person, a game but mostly on bad practices people will do to achieve what they want. Here is my advice to anyone wanting to support small businesses but dont have or a scared about their finances, and I will take the Tales of Rein Ravine as an example : wait first to have something to chew on. Then, see what people think about it, many youtubers will make videos (Amelia Dreambell, Rattle and many others). After that, if they have a free demo (which is, to me, always a green flag) see if you enjoy the game and what advantages it can give you. Make sure to avoid paying directly and prefer to use Paypal for instance, so you don’t give out personal infos. Be safe everyone, and hopefully, all people who have been hurt in this situation will find justice.

You can't create a whole game for free, even the coders and artists were willingly getting scammed. Either we are all getting paid or none of us are. Modders for example sometimes make a big cooperation of people where no one is getting paid, but it's entirely just a big passion project for their favorite video game. I was in a modding project for about a year. But even with that I felt like after some time I didn't have time for it anymore and I wanted to focus more on my personal life stuff. When you're doing stuff for free you are not under any obligation to keep doing it. That chick who did take the money but didn't pay her artists and coders, clearly she has no incentive to do the project either because she has no stakes in it. She already got the money, and she's not using the money to pay for the project, so why should she care? It's literally the saying "people don't respect stuff they get for free". No effort + no stakes= ungrateful.

Man this seems to be the way to get free money nowadays, fake a game, exploit volunteers, make up lies, take the money and dissappear. I feel for the people whoms excitement, motivation and enthousiasm got exploited. I am glad you share this, with any project I will be so mindful before spending any money on it without guarantees. I already was but still, this info makes you even more aware. Usually my intuïtion is right, I chose to back That Horse Game Unbridled and Rein Ravine, so far they are doing really good. Wanted to back astride too but something always held me back, I'm glad about that, I don't like the art style they switched to now, those soft colours they had at first really made it unique.

The fact that these people outright deceived the community that put their money, trust, and resources into this game is outrageous. People expected compensation, or in other words a game from this team and ended up losing more than they gained (practically gained nothing in that sense). It is outrageous and depressing for those who put their efforts into helping this game grow and thrive. Stealing and lying is never okay especially in this scenario. Hopefully a game can become of this and put some people’s minds and hearts at ease someday.

heres my report btw: The creator has abandoned the project numerous times, promised refunds from upset backers and never followed through, left backers, development team members (devs, moderators, artists, coders, etc..) in the dark with no updates, info, or even simple answers. The discord server for this project is dead silent due to the creator's lack of care for the project and neglection of the dev team, backers, and also lack of proper team/project management. The original artists at the start have long since pulled their art from the project (after the creator's first unforseen and long hiatus) and many team members have left the project entirely. The creator's last known comment was about how they are struggling to keep afloat but that was last year. The creator has been known to go dead silent repeatedly and people have seen them frequently posting on Facebook about going on "vacations" during those months and months on end of silence and leaving people in the dark and questioning if they'll ever get refunded/regretting their decision to even think backing was worth it. So far no one has truly been able to get a hold of the creator for fool-proof answers. Please do something about this situation, it has affected many people, backers and dev team members alike.

honestly the absurd amount of linearts of breeds from the start was a bit of a red flag to me they would have had to make every possible color combination over and over for EVERY BREED they had already drawn (which seemed like quite a few!) AND TACK fitted, before the game is even launched; thats a TON of work for mere volunteers. i feel especially bad for them. i just wonder who's idea that was! :')

Tbf, we did that much on our own. We ended up with more starter breeds than was ever planned. So that was not Shoe's doing. Just clearing that up.
