Benton's "Is he conscious!?" gets me every time. Peter and Carter had a true mentor/student loving relationship that developed really well. Can you imagine when he got that call, and they said it was Lucy and Carter - I wished we could see THAT. He had to have bolted to the elevator, pushed the button and then ran for the stairs when the doors didn't immediately open.

I’ll never forget seeing this episode for the first time. When Benton was running down the stairs to the ER, I was literally saying to the tv, “Go, Peter, go, Peter, go!!!” As an RN working full-time, I always felt exhausted after watching ER. Felt like I just worked a shift. My nurse brain never turned off. Excellent medical writing. (most of the time, I caught them in an error every now now and then, but it wasn’t often.)

I love Greys but it really is apples and oranges. Grey's anatomy is about the surgeon's lives while they are surgeons, i.e. medical soap opera but ER was at least 80% about the medicine I think. These two episodes were my favorites. Back then we didn't get to know 100% of why a person was killed off but turns out Kellie Martin had a family member die and would get panic attacks and therefore requested to be let go. I just love how Benton, who never shows emotion, finally shows how much he loves Carter. Best bromance there ever was.

If you remember though, Lucy was awake longer, she and Carter passed out at the same time, meaning that Carter's injury's were more severe for blood loss, while Lucy's were slower (that being said, we dont' know how long Lucy was lying on the floor before Cater walked in). But in the end, Carter's injuries were able to be repaired whereas Lucy's were not, though her prognosis was initially better than Carter's. They both had fatal wounds - but Carter's were found and repaired in time. I always wonder if Carter had found Lucy and instead of Paul stabbing him, it was just Lucy that got stabbed (and the actress wasn't leaving) if it would have saved her or if the time between when Carter got stabbed and they found them made a difference in Lucy living or dying.

When the police officer was trying to ask questions while Carter was conscious but far from stable, I can empathize with that situation. After having held pressure on a patient’s arm to stop the severe bleeding in a one small but deep cut, a police officer appeared and began to read the patient the Miranda Rights. This made the patient tense his arm and the new blood clot shot out of the arm and went up to the ceiling. While I again put pressure over the wound (which was bleeding freely again), the officer was removed from the ER! Back when this happened (over 40 years ago), night shift personnel included me and one other staff person. You can imagine how hectic things were.

Well in fairness its not remotely the same thing. If the cop was reading the patient miranda warnings that means it was someone under arrest and that could have waited. The cop in this episode was trying to find out who stabbed him because the guy was still on the loose somewhere in the hospital and they had to know who they were looking for before he killed somebody else. Also a more grim reason is because they need his statement for evidence and if he dies they won't be able to get it and maybe not be able to prove the guy murdered him.

However as you can see here he cared about him a lot and in the seasons that followed he helped him get help for addiction and was there when he needed a kidney due to one failing as a result of what you see in this episode many years later near the end of the series. Jhon's evolution and painful process of both recovery and guilt for Lucy's death is impressive since they had many frictions in their relationship as mentor and student, here he shows that deep down he cared for her and more because before the attack he It had caught her attention and she had left her alone with the patient who attacked them. It is also amazing how at the end of the sixth season we found out about John's drug addiction and how Peter Beanton accompanies him to the rehab clinic in Atlanta and We can also see the impact that Dr. Mark Greene had on him since later in the remaining seasons Jhon had with the other students and residents. a very realistic character in this show and the actuation of Noah Wyle is amazing

You're lucky. You don't have to wait between episodes. We had to wait a whole week between seeing Carter and Lucy get stabbed before we could find out what was going to happen. There was no binge watching them.

If I ever get stabbed I would like Eriq Lasalle to reprise his role as Benton and operate on me. Best surgeon there, even better than Romano and Corday.

One of the most heart wrenching episodes of ER. To think that Carter would be the one to survive from his injuries and Lucy would die from hers. How the whole team came together to save to people that where part of their family and knowing that they where going to lose one. Very sad and heartbreaking. 👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️🗡🧑😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

The one vital thing about this episode that no one mentions, Benton was faced with a hard choice between saving Carter or Lucy. He kept being pulled back and forth into each room and for the last room pull, Benton paused and looked in Carter's room & then Lucy's room. He chose to fully focus on saving Carter. That was a hard decision for him.

I mean it wasn't a hard decision, he was told to go bc Corday was on her way. He also preferred to be with Carter let's admit that lol. It annoyed me later in the episode when he was slow to help Cleo's patient, and wondered where Corday was - DUH, SHES WITH LUCY!!!!!! But he loved Carter so I do understand.

Ellen Crawford as Lydia turned in such a great performance in this ep, albeit much more subdued than the main cast. She's composed, competent as ever, but just barely holding it together and on the brink of tears as she helps work on Carter. Maura Tierney was amazing too, staying brisk and focused until she finds the knife and has to have that little moment to herself in the supply room. This entire cast was incredible.

I've worked in many hospitals in large cities and states. You wouldn't believe how many deaths have accurred because items are not where they should be or not been around at all. ALSO, before your small child or infant NEEDS the ED make SURE they can adequately care for your little one, you'd be surprised how many are not. Very true fact!!!!
