Erasing Family - In North America, over 25 MILLION PARENTS are being erased from their children's lives after divorce and separation. The ERASING FAMILY documentary follows young adults fighting to reunite with their broken families. Through the eyes of 23-year-old Ashlynn, 12-year-old Lauren and 28-year-old Brian, consequences on mental health caused by profiteering high-conflict divorce court settlements are revealed. The film shows programs that encourage mediation and shared parenting which will prevent parental alienation and future childhood trauma, making divorce and separation less costly both financially and emotionally. The film ends with children and parents being reunited on screen and will inspire other kids to reach out to #erased parents, siblings and grandparents.

These situations don’t occur just because of the court systems. Sometimes, the kid(s) are adults and they believe the lies told by one parent about the other parent. The alienating parents are often times narcissistic. The seeds of alienation are sowed YEARS prior to the divorce, and the alienating parent is EXTREMELY convincing. That is my situation.

My situation too, court was a ridiculous irrelevance, the psychological -emotional damage, including alienation, was done to the kids during the 'marriage'. Alienation absolutely is part of narcissistic abuse: what other type of person would try to destroy the life and memory of a parent in a child's life, knowing it will forever damage the child and likely make them a narcissist, or co-dependent, too.

Absolutely? It does happen years prior to divorce….. like when you and wife get into a fight and she has you sleep on the couch but then has kids sleep in bed with her and they watch a movie !!! I’m such. Idiot , I can’t believe that I didn’t expose her from the start. I always knew that the things weren’t right that she did but in the moment I never knew what to say or do because I just wanted to stay away from her yucky attitude. I know it’s a learnt behavior as her mother did it with her dad when she was young. I feel there is a hole in my heart , it’s like dealing with a death but knowing that the child is still alive and you still talk to him occasionally but always have this pain from when your son said one day he no longer wanted to come to my house and couldn’t give me a solid reason why , other than that I had changed and wasn’t the same person as before. I’m broken and I was extremely scared when I found out that my wife in new marriage was pregnant , I had this fear that maybe one day she too would suddenly say she didn’t want me in her life just as my son had done without warning . I am broken forever

That might be your situation, but honestly, you're talking to a bunch of strangers who don't know what happened. The courts are very much to blame. As are the parents who did the wrongs.

I am a mother who’s being alienated by my adult children after my husband filed for divorce he’s used them to bring more pain for things he’s told them I’ve done when I didn’t do the things he’s told them. He’s turned them against me and since he has money they’ve all chosen to follow him and his ways. So sad how one person can change a whole household. 😢

In strange way, I almost want to congratulate your ex-husband. 99.9999999% of this BS is usually a mentally unbalanced mother spewing venom and then playing the victim. She then effortlessly uses her kids as pawns to place an exclamation point on her sociopathy.

My mother tried to alienate me from my dad during and after their divorce. I still had custody time with him, but she would say lots of terrible things about him that I thankfully realized weren't true once I left the nest. The things she said really messed with my relationship though while I was still a kid. I'm happy to say that now that I know the truth as an adult I have made up for lost time and our relationship is good. My mom sure seems to have gotten bitten by karma in general since the divorce and I've lost a lot of respect for her since I realized she hated my dad more than she loved me. People who try to alienate the other parent seem to get what they deserve.

This is multi generational failed parenting on one or both sides & people also having children without actually being competent or having the necessary support systems to do so too. Poor parenting doesn't start at those current parents, it goes back to all previous parents before who have passed on generational trauma, unprocessed damage, poor parenting & did not get the professional support to process deep generational trauma. Then one so called parent decides to make things even worse & deliberately compounds all this multigenerational trauma by initiating a never ending vendetta of false allegations, slander, manipulation, brainwashing, spying, jealousy, insecurities, hatred, malicious and calculated methods to use a broken system to their nefarious advantage to deliberately lie & destroy any blood ties to the other parent & they find the system supports this campaign especially for females of hatred & intentional parental alienation whilst feigning to be a victim when they are in fact a malignant, narcissistic perpetrator who will selfishly destroy anything due to their own failures that they refuse to ever take accountability for. Instead of becoming a better person & sparing the children from their own issues & go to therapy etc & actually work on separating their hatred and personal nefarious motivations from using the children to that end whilst claiming they love their children, these people should be imprisoned for no less than 10 years for such crimes to their own children and former partners, they're criminals in every regard & everyone should be saved from their evils.

Every Divorcing couple with children should be required to watch this. My Ex, who I shared my twin daughters with, became my best friend after he realized that his anger was hurting them and not me. He was a wonderful father but suffered from alcoholism and that was not something that was I could not tolerate for the sake of my children. I did everything I could to foster a positive relationship for my daughters with their father, and it was the best thing I have ever done. When things got really bad with his alcoholism I helped him in any way I could, including telling him I didn't need him to pay child support, because I really could get by without it and still provide for my daughters. Ultimately he committed suicide when they were teenagers. Today my daughters only suffer from the loss of him as do I. They have nothing but good memories of him as a father. They know about his alcoholism and they know that he and I always put them first. My family also supported my Ex and loved him and his beautiful heart. My girls are as well adjusted as they can be with the loss of their father and we, as a family, celebrate his life whenever we can. I am not saying that the divorce was a positive thing, but we made it work for our daughters because we put them first.

I know a rich guy in this situation. It doesn't help as much as you would think since the child support $ go to pay for the ex's very expensive attorney. This is not exclusively a rich/poor thing - the courts are biased against dads, either because they work or because they don't work. Doesn't matter.

To leave her alone. To respect her was more important. I pray for her, and I love her

Absolutely fantastic documentary. Thank you for addressing this issue. I am an erased mom for almost 3 years from my son now age 28. My oldest son’s step father told my son so many lies about me. I am close with my other 2 children ages 27 and 17. Their brother is distant and they too feel erased with their limited relationship. Our legal system is destroying families. I feel terrible that a loving father was shot running from a police officer. I’m from Baltimore county originally but live in New York so I was really happy to see that my home town is taking huge steps to make changes. Sending blessings to everyone.

I have been the target parent of Parental Alienation for 25+ years. Yes, it started well before our divorce. My ex-wife could not co-parent, her hate was stronger towards me than the thoughtfulness and love of our kids! She still carries her hate at 63 years of age. Sure, there has been some good times with my children. However, I could only please them with monies and gifts. I still have the court documents that was all lies. Why does this cost so much to see your own child/children? Why not co-parent and stop with breeding hate and division? Be grateful that everyone is alive and forgive and move on. Thank you for fighting @tracyelainebutler. I want to also. But I am exhausted fighting my narcs, the courts/cps, and now my own children to parent, them whom I bore (& prev parented alone - by the fathers' choices). We lose everyone & everything to these narcs; but honestly truly believing we are pretty good parents - we never ever imagine we could also lose our own children (esp psychologically/emotionally). We actually usually are very good parents, which triggers weird jealousy instead of the teamwork we desire. I don't know about other parents, but I don't think this can be fixed without outside help - from those that have either regained their strength - or aren't affected (or directly). Unfortunately those unaffected believe we MUST have done SOMETHING, or this is just all too much for them to bother with. But you are so right - the damage - and generational - and whether others realize it or not, the traumatized children that we are sending out into the world ARE going to affect others. It's an out-of-control snowball, and we desperately need others to help us stop it. And just to add - however this all gets orchestrated - or if simply by the narcs themselves - they even work on separating us then broken moms & dads - turning it into gender, etc. issues. Narc-types are amongst both genders; but in our desperate searches, we often find comfort in those taking sides, etc. It's all just separating us further and further... until we are each like I am today; finding it difficult to even breathe through another day (I am NOT suicidal. I am just weary.). Again... THANK YOU. 💜🤗

When the custodial parent uses the child(ren) of the relationship as a pawn to control the other parent and their subsequent family members (grandparents, aunts, uncles) simply because they don't have the resources to pay $50,000 for an attorney to fight a custody battle in court (what we were quoted) - we lose. And at present there is no recourse with the juvenile and domestic relations court to do anything but deal with it and pay through the nose for a child that we will never get to see. It's disgraceful. My mother did this to my father - erased him from my life until I was 17 years old ... I taught my children better, to never do this to their children no matter how much animosity they might feel towards the other parent. It isn't about either of you once the child is born - your sole focus at that point is raising a happy, loving child with both parents involved in that child's life.

My own mother attempted to alienate only my oldest child. The damage to our relationship and our daughters attachment bond was awful. It created severe behaviors. They tried to take custody of her because I tried to establish boundaries around drinking around my kids. It's all about control. Dysfunctional caregivers come in many forms. No one wants her to know they even talk to me because they know she will be mad at them. I have nothing but toxicity around me. I wish I would have taken my kids and moved away a long time ago. My life would be different now. I never want to see my mother again. I really want to disappear. Move to another country even. It's time for me to heal. I can't keep wollering in this pain. Why is it the people you're supposed to be the closest to, the ones that are supposed to make you feel safe, are the very ones to cause so much pain? They don't even care because they never did care about you. Everything they do is a show and so well orchestrated to empower their image and to lower yours. And no matter what, your kids, will always take up for them no matter how horrible they are to you. Mine will go so far as to talk about the devil ruining families and at the same time be the devil's advocate. I'm so ready to find me a new life. This one is not working out for me.

All these stollen lullabies. The trauma resurfaces when I watch these things as it’s been 12 years since I’ve seen my only son. It’s just terribly sad and I imagine I will go to my grave feeling like one of my vital organs are missing. Like I need air in my lungs to breathe I feel as though I’ve lived without the beat in my heart. I can breathe. But I gasp. I can inhale but I pray for the day where I can finally catch my breath. There are some things that are just too hard to speak about. I appreciate this documentary. It was hard to watch. But when you live a life being crucified and exiled from your own home town running from bench warrants over child support because your ex wants nothing more than to validate and show his son that mommy is that unstable person he made me out to be. My son was 12. When I hear his voice it’s still the voice of a 12 year old who loved me. He talked to me and he trusted me. I know he chose to mimick his fathers words and portray the same hatred because I know his father and he is Karen in this video. Narcissistic and entitled and wounded. Having grown up without a father of his own- he needed his son to feel the same abandonment he felt and there’s no selflessness in that. There’s only vengeance and intention to inflict harm- I fought for three years only to find out the Attorney I hired who was the district attorneys wife at the time was paid off. My ex had the money And he warmed me if we went to court I would be embarrassed and I would lose. And I did. But for me it was more important that my son knew I fought on his behalf because I knew his father would only fight and make my son feel like he was never good enough to because he is the product of me. And if I showed up at his sporting events he would chastise my son for how horrible he played because I was there so my son would ask me not to come and if I didn’t my ex would say…. “See your mom never even comes to see you play” It makes sense now Why I never received another bill I. Three years after paying my retainer fee/ This loss of time and stolen memories and having to defend your right to defend the child that literally came out of my body is like living the same day over and over again/ my child support got settled as I ran to three different states to avoid arrest and worked to pay what my son probably didn’t think I could do as I’m sure his father set out to prove I was unable to remain stable enough to do so but the darkness it takes for a person to be that calculated in an effort to punish me while using a child a weapon deserves to be the one who has those memories stolen/ if I could buy back the years and the secrets I would but I’ve realized that nothing will make any of this right. The only resolve I have is to reconcile with the past and myself and trust that God has a purpose greater than myself and what I’ve lost. Perhaps for my son, he will break a generational curse for his children in an effort to be the dad someday that his dad will never be. I will grieve the rest of my days. But I won’t give up.

I'm glad Dizzy got a picture of his daughters. This Dad never got zero pictures of his children and the Courts would not stop the destruction of my belongings while I had to live on the street with nothing. The Courts would falsify my income returns so my support payment was greater than the income I would receive. So every year I was behind on support and the Courts were taking every thing away from me so it was hard for me to do my job and in the end losing my jobs. When the money ran out the Courts started to take pity on me thou my assets were all gone by now and living with friends. The Courts never gave this Dad a chance to see my children from the start of Court proceedings and lasting for years. Several years after the support ended the one son came to see me and asked what happened to the money tree. It was hard to talk to him as he was Angry, Mad, Violent and Upset. He was a twisted person and I asked him if he was going to tell his siblings and he replied NO F------ Way. Dad said why not and the son said he would be ostracized and put out on the street just like Dad was. Great!

My husband is an alienated father. It hurts me to see how his children and ex are treating him. They call or see only when they need something like finacial assitance, health insurance stuffs or paperwork problems. My husband gave the ex wife everything - the house, half of his salary, when he retired she got half of his pension too, oh and by the way she's also on my husband's health insurance policy and his two kids as well. Still they think he's the devil, the root of all problems, family wrecker. His children are now adults and married. We are happy that his eldest at least reached out to him, so we are now a part of his life. But the youngest, a girl who was brainwashed by the ex so much, doesn't want to do anything with him, only when she needs money for her studies or medical bills. The children were 9 and 13 when my husband divorced the ex, my husband took very good care of them (kids gets a 750€ monthly allowance aside from what the ex gets).I even discovered old emails of my husband and his ex (printed), where he begged her to let his daugther see him and to not make her feel guilty for seeing him but the ex used the children as a revenge, she never gave any of my husband's birthday cards for the children, so they thought he doesn't care about them. It's sad when one parent do something like this. Children are NOT your possesions. They are real human beings with thoughts and feelings. What these parents do is child abuse. They should be held responsible for hurting their children conciously.

My mother did her best to "erase" my Dad many years ago, but she ran into one problem: A little girl who refused to give up her Daddy. That little girl was me, and I had just enough solid memories to know my Dad was the Good Guy, and my mother was lying to me about everything. From the age of three, when I watched him sobbing on the tarmac outside of our plane (my mother had told my sisters and I we were going to vacation with my Aunt and cousins, when in reality, we were flying to Reno NV for her to get a divorce), until age 18, when I lost him to pancreatic cancer, I never stopped fighting her for him. But it was a lifelong struggle that damaged my relationship with my mother for the rest of our lives, until she died this past year at 89. She could never admit her lies (affairs, younger sister with a different father) and her toxicity was legendary. A born-and-bred bigot, from the poorest parts of Mississippi, she was a social climber. My Dad just didn't have deep enough pockets to suit her, so her second husband was an "upgrade" (in her eyes) to a doctor, and the third, an "officer and a gentleman" with very deep pockets. I left home at 18, only to come back to care for her husbands as they lay dying, something she didn't have the bandwidth for. The reason I'm posting this is singulair: nearly every one of these kids could have told you ^which^ parent was truly the *toxic *one. But no one asks the kids, until whichever parent most filled with poison has had time to drown their them in their vile dogma. And then it takes a lifetime to undo all the damage, to the kids AND the *erased *parent. We have to start recognizing that not all "mothers" nurture their children, and to begin to not only ASK the kids what/how they feel, but do it before irreparable harm is done (and believe them when they do). Last two things: So very happy for Dizzy, Ashlynn and Kelly and their new life together! And Brian's step-monster "Karyn"?? What an evil, loathsome, repugnant woman she is, and so appropriately named.

Similar story. My biomother was a professor and had a career and my dad was a stay at home dad who raised me from an infant. There are lots of picture of him carrying me everywhere as a baby and toddler. He would put me in his back pack (designed for carrying kids) and take me hiking all over the place and spend lots of time reading to me and taking care of the home/cooking dinner and playing 1950s house husband. My parents divorce happened when a large sum of money was suddenly inherited by my biomother and she be came a real witch with the new found power (in combination with a toxic and humiliating work environment) and took it out on my dad through domestic violence that ended in divorce. (My dad would never admit to her nastiness and I feel had some psychical complex making him accept abuse - he remarried a number of years later and chose someone that treated him poorly at times and would never stand up for himself when I was a kid and did something knotty.) My biomother would probably claim to be an erased parent (I haven't spoken to her in many years and she is probably dead). She was seriously abusive toward me and I cut her out of my life for very good reasons. I know she claimed parent alienation in a few of her many times she dragged my dad into court over the years (my parent's were in and out of family court from the time I was 4 to two week's before I turned 18.) Kids know their parents - they are kind of mirrors to the parents personalities and they know which one(s) is/are *toxic* and they should be able to make the choice before the damage is done.

#erased mom here. My son’s father was abusing him, myself and many others reported it and then I was accused of alienation when I was doing my duty to protect my son. It’s been since 2016 that my son was #legallykidnapped by the California system. I fought for 6 years trying to get my son home and protected and never was successful. The California child welfare system and the courts that support them are destroying families repeatedly and I wish it could be stopped. It took away the only thing in my life that gave me any meaning, my beautiful son. I have no idea if I’ll ever even get to see my son again. His father has done everything in his power to keep me out of my son’s life. The court should not be given this power to take away a parents right to parent their child

frankly the 50/50 is a very bad idea as was no fault divorce, it greatly hurts abused spouses and keeps children in the middle. Divorced people in majority cannot get along or co parent ergo why they are divorced. Also many abusive men love this as the can pay less or no child support and they do not utilize their time with the children as a rule leaving all the financial burden on women who may not have the income ie former SAHM to offset that loss of such needed financial support. Usually many men have zero interest in parenting, while married and is the cause of many divorces to begin with. 50 50 ignores tender years doctrines also and nursing newborns and moms must comply, too many uncaring very young fathers are ill equipped to deal well in those circumstances. If fathers want to be good fathers it begins at conception, not upon divorce or in the teenaged years. not a fan of this for far too many victims of negligent or domestic abuse.

Decent documentary....it leaves a lot of stuff out...the social workers which often work for different organizations that are just an extension of the family court system and what movement/organization that heavily influences the social workers which in turn make the Judgement for how things go in the family court. The Judges just basically do what the social workers tell them to do taking the easy way out so to say. And the social workers in general have a favorite parent but that's not touched on. Also it's great and all when some of these broken families can reunite but that doesn't fix all. What about the time where you are supposed to be there for your children and to help develop and mold them into the best adult they can be? That time is gone...the damage done.

I feel bad for Dizzy, the barber who was blackmailed to give up his kids for adoption. His ex wife said something like, " Dizzy was not tricked by the adoption papers. He knowingly gave up his kids to adoption in order to get released from child support payments." So obviously, the ex wife was blackmailing him, using the child support system to make him give up his parental rights. We know child support calculations are far above the actual cost of raising kids...we know child support bankrupts many dads...and we know State governments love arresting dads for not paying child support they can't afford. The ex wife clearly knew this, and blackmailed Dizzy...IMHO. That is slimy on her part...total lack of character by the ex-wife. No surprise the oldest daughter ran away from her.

My youngest had to escape her marriage and now lives with me but her sisters won't speak to her much as they know she is somewhat "loyal" to me.
