He then won the presidency, which southern states seceded due to fears that he would ban slavery. His point about the “if i could end the war and keep slavery, I’d do it” was two sided. He didn’t care whether slavery existed or not in the US, his main goal was unconditional surrender and reabsorption of the confederates. He then prohibited slavery as a political goal to prevent Europe from helping the Confederates. By the last year of his life, he supported the 13th amendment and the abolition of slavery into constitutional law. He died with what some historians suggest may be an intention to make former slaves and blacks citizenship and the right to vote, though he at the time was documented possibly deporting freed slaves to Liberia
