One of the great hippy funky tracks of the early 70s. Love how weird this was with the background voices etc. Great underrated tune (the long version, I thought there was a longer version on the album). I bet this song was playing during a lot of early 70s orgies!

Great Song!!! Definitely a Classic!!! Eric Burdon..lead singer and frontman of The early 60's group "The Animals" creates a band called "War." Actually, discovered this band and they became good friends and then they decided to make music and albums and songs together. Next reaction should be "Tobbacco Road."

As a kid (13 or 14, back in the early seventies) I bought the single (45rpm vinyl) called "The Cisco Kid" which had "Beetles In The Bog" as a B-Side. I liked the latter far better than the A-Side and it got me hooked on heavy funk. I mean, as the hard-rock kid I thought I was, those bass lines couldn't be denied, that hard way of pronouncing the lyrics had to be heard, the drums and percussion couldn't be denied, and I was hooked. I walked around in a Harlem shuffle, although I was from rural Belgium and never ever heard of anything remotely similar to Harlem, but the steps were there, the swag was in the hips and the step was right in rhythm. Later I found out the Burdon guy also sang in The Animals and that opened yet other doors for my ears and brain to comprehend. Cheers lads. You guys are awesome. I have close to twenty-six thousand records but it still pleases me to no end when I hear stuff I like commented on some fifty-odd years after I heard that stuff for the first time. And what is most pleasing is that you guys also like what you hear. I appreciate the hell out of you.

Eric Burdon was lead singer for The Animals. They were part of the British Invasion in the 60's with quite a few classic hit songs. When Eric made this song with War that was our intro to War back in 1970.

“The song came from a tipped-over bottle in a recording studio and developed out of a jam session. But the spilling of the wine became quite a ceremony with the band. Promoters would leave bottles of red California wine backstage. . . “What we never seemed to have was a corkscrew, but I discovered that these bottles were easy to get into if you just plunged your middle finger into the cork. The trick was placing your mouth over the bottle to catch the cheap plonk as it erupted. It soon became a backstage event, this ‘spilling of the wine.’”

Eric Burden is singing. He was the front man for the early 60s British Rock/Blues Band "The Animals." They sang "House of The Riising Sun," "It's My Life" and many more hit songs. Eric Burden also sang "Sky Pilot," another early 70s song about the Vietnam war. Eric sang many Muddy Waters and early Blues songs from the great Black Blues artists of the 1920s and 30s. Eric is one of the great artists that came in on the wave of artists and Bands, known as "The British Invasion," with the Rolling Stones, and The Beatles among others. Eric must be almost 80 years old now.

The World Is A Ghetto, Billboard’s best-selling album of 1973, should have all by its lonesome landed War a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Always thought that if Lonnie could swallow his pride and reconcile with his brothers, they would be in. Lonnie played one of my all-time favorite features on keyboard: for exactly one minute starting at the 3:14 mark in the 7:52 length version of Deliver the Word.

In 1968, Eric Burdon (The Animals) and his producer Jerry Goldstein saw a group called Nightshift (from Long Beach) playing at The Rag Doll in North Hollywood, backing Hall of Fame defensive end Deacon Jones (yes he sang as a side hustle). They decided to form War and gigged around SoCal until they went into the studio to record their debut album (this was the single from it).

Good lord, just another awesome song by one more great band in a cavalcade of 70s excellence. The creativity, musicianship, variety, and craftsmanship of the music coming out of the 70s really blows my mind, more so in retrospect than upon initial listen. Many years of weak music sure shows up that contrast that the greatness of the 70s provides. Amazing.
