I knew the lyric was “take that pearl”. I could hear it. But I thought the reference was Shakespearian. From “Hamlet”, where the pearl is dropped into the goblet to either detect poison or nullify it. It didn’t save Hamlet’s mom (nor his stepdad/uncle). I thought the message was “Don’t be distracted by the wine, it’s poison, don’t drink it. Spill it out and take the pearl. Go for what’s valuable. Life is short.” That sort of thing…

Amazing. I've been hearing this song for over 50 years, and always heard, "spill the wine, dig that girl". I bet even today most of my old buddies still sing it that way. Of course in 1970 a teenage kid had no access to most song lyrics. There was no internet, nobody circulated lyrics, and if any magazine printed them, nobody read it. And if you didn't own the album, you probably only heard the song on your car radio without headphones.

I told him how great his performance was, and he APOLOGIZED for not being at his best because of, ¨...this damn phookin´ virus.¨ Unbelievable. He´d been fantastic! I shouldn´t admit this, but after two of their concerts, I stole his tambourine. I know, pretty much of a jerk move, but I wanted a part of him as a keepsake. Well said. born in 60. Same era. I'm a musician and have played and recorded with countless musicians and bands of every genre(ok maybe not EVERY genre)i love and respect and appreciate almost all the music of the world(notice i said almost). Color or race has never been a problem. I love the diversity and the way we can all communicate thru musical expression and feeling. It is the one ultimate unifyer imo.

Always love hearing stories from Brother Harold. The man is so full of life and positivity, that it's hard to not have a smile after hearing him talk. On a little more sad of a note, it's been just over 44 years, since Brother Charles Miller was stabbed to death in the middle of the road, a block away from his home in LA, and even though there were several witnesses to his killing, The LAPD has yet to bring his killers to justice. For those who don't know who Brother Charles was, he played saxophone and flute for War, and was the primary singer for their hit, "Low Rider".

Thank you for the fantastic interviews! Eric Burdon is my favourite singer ever! I saw him live in a Melbourne pub in the late '80s and he blew my mind! He never did a bad song. Spill the wine was so radical for that time. Thanks again for the in-depth research!

I was digging through some old photos and found my backstage pass for the Bluesfest 1998 in Windsor Ontario - Eric Burdon and the Animas were the headliners that weekend and I got to meet him briefly. It was an amazing show I'll never forget!!

This great song was covered by Michael Hutchence for the 1996 soundtrack of Barb Wire, (Pam Anderson). Although the original recording is well recognized as a classic, the 1996 version with the incomparable Michael Hutchence is in some ways even better! Twenty five years of ever improving recording technology makes this version SLAM. I played this at many parties and it was always a “hit.” I believe that had this version been included on a more popular movie soundtrack, it would be universally revered, but sadly it kind of got lost in a forgettable movie. I would encourage anyone who loves this song to check out this remake. Just make sure you crank it up!

@@annharrison5609 Hello friend! I totally agree with you. Now I must check out The Animals version of “It’s All Over Now Baby Blue!” One more suggestion for you… Checkout The Stovall Sisters rendition of Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit In The Sky.” They were the backup singers on the original and went on to record it on their own in what I consider one of the most uplifting gospel songs I have ever heard! By the way, I’m in Florida USA, where do you hail from?

Eric Burdon and War was the first rock concert I attended, and one of the best I ever went to at age fifteen in 1970. $3.50 admission and $.50 for a dose of peace blotter. War came out and played for an hour, then Eric joined and they played nonstop for another 11/2 to 2 hours. Eric was literally soaked in sweat! Set a high bar for future concerts, but there were so many great ones then, and they didn't cost an arm and leg!

War has a great cruisin' hit tune named "Summer" (6:37 min.) along with the song "East LA" in which Jose Feliciano has a singing part. Have many of you ever heard of the '80's band Santa Esmeralda? They covered two of The Animals songs "House Of The Rising Sun" (14:57 min.) and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" (14:19 min.) and turned each of them into really good disco dance songs which both feature a heavy Spanish influence.

OH my, if only all of us could be like Harold Brown, What profound insight. I would just love to meet him. I think we would end up talking for hours. Maybe, someday, humanity will learn to get along. Ya I thought Eric said "Take that girl" (it sounds better, to me). "Spill the Wine" kind of kicked off "War's " run, but for me "Low Rider" is their best tune. Eric Burdon has had a long career, I go all the way back to "The Animals" and "House of the Rising Sun" and was one of the first tunes I learned to play on Guitar (their version)
