Harold couldn't be more right when he said "we can't allow our society to go to hell in a handbasket". Music is a true unifier - doesn't matter age, race, gender - we can find commonality in music.

I knew the lyric was “take that pearl”. I could hear it. But I thought the reference was Shakespearian. From “Hamlet”, where the pearl is dropped into the goblet to either detect poison or nullify it. It didn’t save Hamlet’s mom (nor his stepdad/uncle). I thought the message was “Don’t be distracted by the wine, it’s poison, don’t drink it. Spill it out and take the pearl. Go for what’s valuable. Life is short.” That sort of thing…

Don’t hate on me for lovin’ my memories….or the music then. I never said I didn’t love the music of today! I only hope that you will have as many good memories and as much fun as I did and do still! Amazing. I've been hearing this song for over 50 years, and always heard, "spill the wine, dig that girl". I bet even today most of my old buddies still sing it that way. Of course in 1970 a teenage kid had no access to most song lyrics. There was no internet, nobody circulated lyrics, and if any magazine printed them, nobody read it. And if you didn't own the album, you probably only heard the song on your car radio without headphones.

Don't fall into the establishment's trap by thinking that everyone of a certain age thinks/does the same things. It's just a way to divide and conquer us. I remember when Eric Burdon was with War. At first I was disappointed but after I heard that music the disappointment disappeared. I saw them in concert in Spokane and it was a great experience. I never could figure out what that song meant. I thought maybe it was “do I dig that girl?” That didn’t make a whole lot of sense but I ran with it. Even now this 71 year old white boy *(me)* thinks he can dance when I listen to “Slippin’ into Darkness “ or “All Day Music“ or just about any of their songs. I love that music. They do their own thing. They copy no one.

I was once out strolling One very hot summer's day When I thought I'd lay myself down to rest In a big field of tall grass I lay there in the sun And felt it caressing my face As I fell asleep and dreamed I dreamed I was in a Hollywood movie And that I was the star of the movie This really blew my mind The fact that me, an overfed long-haired, leaping gnome Should be the star of a Hollywood movie But there I was I was taken to a place The Hall of the Mountain King I stood high up on a mountaintop Naked to the world In front of Every kind of girl There was long ones, tall ones, short ones, brown ones Black ones, round ones, big ones Crazy ones Out of the middle Came a lady She whispered in my ear Something crazy She said Spill the wine, dig that girl Spill the wine, take that pearl Spill the wine, dig that girl Spill the wine, take that pearl I could feel hot flames of fire roaring at my back As she disappeared But soon she returned In her hand was a bottle of wine In the other, a glass She poured some of the wine from the bottle into the glass And raised it to her lips And just before she drunk it She said Take the wine, take that pearl Spill the wine, take that pearl Take the wine, take that pearl Spill the wine, take that pearl Take that pearl, yeah! It's all good Oh, you got to do it Spill that wine, spill that wine Spill the wine, spill the wine, spill the wine, spill the wine, spill the wine Take that pearl

In the early 90’s, I worked my first restaurant job in Palm Springs, a vegetarian place. I waited on a guy who came in a couple times a week. Parked his Harley on the sidewalk, same order every time. Quiet guy, didn’t say much, always cleaned his plate and tipped well. Almost a year later, my coworker was talking about how Eric Burdon was a regular, and how he always sat at my table. I was kinda stunned, bc I had no clue. I still remember his very particular order after all these years, lol!!

I saw Eric with the original Animals, the Eric Burdon Band and with other bands in the ´80s and ´90s, but my favorite concerts were with him and War. They were phenomenal! All the members were superb, every show, every song. I got to speak with him after one concert. I told him how great his performance was, and he APOLOGIZED for not being at his best because of, ¨...this damn phookin´ virus.¨ Unbelievable. He´d been fantastic! I shouldn´t admit this, but after two of their concerts, I stole his tambourine. I know, pretty much of a jerk move, but I wanted a part of him as a keepsake. My ex-wife threw them away about 10 years afterwards. That´s one of the reasons she´s my ex-wife. 😉

As a young kid in the 70s I lived in Longmont and Commerce City Co. I had a chopper bicycle. Me and my friends would ride around and WAR was our soundtrack! I REALLY miss how life was in the 70s/80s/and even most of the 90s. For the most part we were MLKs dream. EVERYONE pretty much got along regardless of what color you were. Then a paradigm shift happened and everything went down the crapper. That's why a lot of us old cats still get along so well while the youth are completely divided (by nefarious design). Old music is a great unifier for those of us that lived back then! I've been asked by people why, as an older white dude, why I listen to Old Skool, and some stuff into the 2000s, rap. Music doesn't know color!! Thank you Professor for keeping the music of my youth alive!! JJ -South Alabama

Always love hearing stories from Brother Harold. The man is so full of life and positivity, that it's hard to not have a smile after hearing him talk. On a little more sad of a note, it's been just over 44 years, since Brother Charles Miller was stabbed to death in the middle of the road, a block away from his home in LA, and even though there were several witnesses to his killing, The LAPD has yet to bring his killers to justice. For those who don't know who Brother Charles was, he played saxophone and flute for War, and was the primary singer for their hit, "Low Rider".

This great song was covered by Michael Hutchence for the 1996 soundtrack of Barb Wire, (Pam Anderson). Although the original recording is well recognized as a classic, the 1996 version with the incomparable Michael Hutchence is in some ways even better! Twenty five years of ever improving recording technology makes this version SLAM. I played this at many parties and it was always a “hit.” I believe that had this version been included on a more popular movie soundtrack, it would be universally revered, but sadly it kind of got lost in a forgettable movie. I would encourage anyone who loves this song to check out this remake. Just make sure you crank it up!

War came out and played for an hour, then Eric joined and they played nonstop for another 11/2 to 2 hours. Eric was literally soaked in sweat! War has a great cruisin' hit tune named "Summer" (6:37 min.) along with the song "East LA" in which Jose Feliciano has a singing part. Have many of you ever heard of the '80's band Santa Esmeralda? They covered two of The Animals songs "House Of The Rising Sun" (14:57 min.) and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" (14:19 min.) and turned each of them into really good disco dance songs which both feature a heavy Spanish influence.

Ya I thought Eric said "Take that girl" (it sounds better, to me). "Spill the Wine" kind of kicked off "War's " run, but for me "Low Rider" is their best tune. Eric Burdon has had a long career, I go all the way back to "The Animals" and "House of the Rising Sun" and was one of the first tunes I learned to play on Guitar (their version)
