Theres killer footage of him playing that venue in march 86 but must have been another day because of his outfit. He has some incredible moments in it including holding the guitar above his head with one arm which I've never seen him do before

Yes, I have a copy of that video. It doesn't matter to me though because on that tour he played 2 nights in Sydney and I was in Front row centre seats on BOTH NIGHTS, so I was at that gig too. I also took a shot of him holding the guitar above his head as you mentioned. If you search for Steve Tyne on Facebook you'll see I've just posted it.

For everyone comparing Clapton and SRV: It's not Clapton can't play like SRV nor SRV can't play like Clapton. They are technically proficient enough to play in whatever style. The only reason not to do so is that's not their sound. A world class guitarist like them must have their own sound, And this unique sound is the gift or legacy they gave to the world.

well, give Clapton credit, he's not the usual guitar showman, yet when he plays for real you can't help but notice it, in any case, i think Clapton's biggest handicap is his sense of economy in his records, even in his own songs he tends to not overplay that's why his concerts are so special: his live performances are 1000 times better than his studio recordings, and they're worth every penny each time you go see him play

I was at this concert. SRV blew Clapton away that night. It was blatant to everybody. Read Clapton's remarks. "One of the purest channels I've ever seen, where everything he sang and played flowed straight down from heaven. Almost like one of those mystic Sufi guys with one finger pointing up and one finger down. That's what it was like to listen to. And I had to leave just to preserve some kind of sanity or confidence in myself." Eric Clapton.

I was at this show! It was the only time I got to see SRV live and believe me he blew the roof off the place. My friend and I just watched him jam with our mouths hanging open. It was really something because we went to see Clapton first of all, and we had no idea Stevie was there. But during the intermission we started seeing roadies with SRV shirts, and we looked at each other wide eyed and said could he really be here?? And sure enough Stevie comes out for the encore and the place went bananas. What a night!

I was the production supervisor for the Palace Television Center the night of this show. We were on hold to do video for the show. The crew had the gear set. The road manager made a couple of trips back to my office to say he didn't know if it was a go or not. Eric did not make the call to not do video that night until a couple of hours after crew call. His manager felt bad for us (we were DYING to do this show), and gave the crew all back stage passes. Then, just before the band came on, he walked me up on stage, set me up behind the stacks, and said "you can watch from here," and left. When Stevie came on, it was like I was in a dream. I lived a lot of cool things in those days, but this may be the coolest. I left the stage that night as limp as over cooked spaghetti.

Never met Clapton but knew Stevie quite well.I knew him both before and after he cleaned up and went drug free.I know the drugs of choice that nearly killed him.His tragic death would have been hell if Christ would have turned His back when Stevie was literally down on his face crippled by years of self abuse that started out of fear from the abuse he suffered as a child.Those are his words. My words are nearly identical.Perhaps that's why we became friends.I only have 1 of the 3 Stratocasters he signed for me now.along with a pile of back stage passes photos,and the local news paper with the photo of Stevie and I on the front page below the fold from the interview I gave just after Stevie left us on a helicopter and flew to heaven. I need to get that old Strat out and get it playing again. Stevie is my friend. I never knew anyone else like him.I even paid for a vanity plate in Michigan on my car to honor the man. It says SRV- RIP that's mine for ever.Stevie has been gone around as long as he lived. I'm getting old too.God only knows why I'm still here but I'm clean too.See ya soon my friend. The Lord God must like guitars with giant strings tuned low. Play that " long A and the Hook G" you told me about till I get there. I can't listen to SRV without getting chills and an energy that makes me want to play my guitar. Eric Clapton himself has stated in so many words that Stevie was on a level higher than he was. It doesn't make him less of a player. It would be a mighty dull world if everyone played guitar the same way.

I was at this show as well. No one expected it, although I knew Stevie was playing in Ann Arbor the night before. Before the introduction, I looked to the side of the stage, and in the seats was Stevie with his legs over the seats in the front.I recognized him right away, and pointed him out to my wife. I distinctly remembering him jumping up on the stage, and literally hunching over his guitar when he played his solo. It was mesmerizing, and Eric was just grinning. Played 3 songs if I remember. I remembered this concert like it was yesterday....It occured on Easter Sunday in 1990....I saw Stevie just the night before in Ann Arbor, MI.....Went to see Clapton the next day and Stevie showed up and played five tunes with Clapton....By far the highlight of this concert.

This is what EC needs from time to time, a guitarist who can push him.. He did it with Duane Allman, Derek Trucks, Doyle Bramhall , Jeff Beck, BB King, Muddy Waters, Freddie King, Albert King;Buddy Guy, Carlos Santana and all the session guitarist (Ry Cooder, Steve Lukather ...) he had over the years.. And the Cream reunion in 2005 did push him to play like he did in the 60's.......

I've seen Clapton probably about 6 times live. Used to be my favorite until I saw him and SRV play together. Still like Clapton, always will. SRV was a very physical player, you really noticed it when you saw him play live. He did very fast bending and vibrato, looked like he was going to snap the neck off. Would have been interesting to watch him age to see how long he could keep up that physical style. I think he was heading in the direction of jazz before he died.

Yes he was. That is kind of the thing on blues guitar; the visceral inflection of emotion. He inherited that from Albert and Freddie King, but what seperates Stevie (Just like Hendrix) is that he was a great rhythm guitar player. Not just his comping, but the rythm in his solos.

I haven't listened to this in a while. Clapton has always been my favorite musician for many reasons. To my ears, his playing has the perfect balance of fire and finesse. His note placement and phrasing are very musical as well. I love both of these guys for sure. It was an honor for me to see Stevie play twice right around this same time. It is impossible to thing of the world of guitar and music overall without the contributions of both artists. Together they wrote ne hell of a lot of the book that others follow.

Both styles compliment each other. Eric is a technical master, while Stevie was a force of nature. I enjoy listening to the expertise of a virtuoso, and I also like someone who was a conduit of the gods. As Clapton once remarked, "It just flowed out of him." His intro here was like a bull in a china shop. Just blistering. Of course, Vaughan idolized Clapton -- so they both fed off each other. Do love that meaty tone of Stevie's, though. Those extremely thick-gauge strings he used sounded out of this world.

Right. Your opinion. Doesn't make it so. Plus, your opinion carries less weight than Clapton's peers. Everyone from BB King, to Buddy Guy, to Robert Cray have talked about Clapton's skill. But I get it. It's cool to hate on Clapton now. Despite the fact that he was one of the primary forces behind the rise of British Blues, playing with everyone from John Mayall to Buddy Guy (during his stint in Britain) to Freddie King. I would even go so far to say that SRV himself would disagree with you. If you read Vaughan's biography, you'd see just how much he respected Clapton's abilities.

+Mikee535 You lost all credibility when you said you think Hendrix is a better technician than Clapton let alone Billy Gibbons or Joe Walsh. Hendrix was better at funk strumming than Clapton, aside from that Clapton was a much more fluid player and he was doing it in the early 60s. Clapton's studio solos were one take stream of consciousness masterpieces wheras Hendrix deliberated and thoughtfully composed his stuff. If you'd said Bloomfield or Allman fair enough, but Hendrix was a studio player who was very sloppy live.

The last 2 years...88-90 have the most intense, frenzied and amazing work from SRV... Funny he was doing in his thirties what Buddy Guy is doing currently in his 70's in regards to effects/fuzz/in your face phrasing and shredding. He was so far ahead of the curve.

SRV was smoking hot in the beginning but Clapton came back strongly by stepping up his game around 6:00 with his versatility... stop phrasing, varying the pace, crazy note bends and his impeccable sense of melody, here he's playing extended spontaneous solos again which he stopped after breaking up with Cream, Derek and the Dominos. I will say right off that yes clapton is very melodious and clean and what have you but to say Stevie is one dimensional is just false. No one came close to the energy or passion SRV put into every single note until he came a long. Took a little bit from every master before him and put it all into a perfect style to forefront the Blues revival. Clapton isn't bad but can't hold it anywhere near Stevie when it comes to blues. And no Stevie doesn't always play fast and doesn't always play the same thing. Go see Lenny, Riviera paradise, Third stone at el mocambo. Whatever it may be Stevie is much more deeply rooted in blues and an overall more skilled guitarist.

SRV is my favorite guitarist of all time, and I listen and play him every day, but as a true bluesman, there was something about his coke/liquor addicted days that made his notes sound more blues-passionate. I’m so happy for him as a person he got clean, but undeniably his best performances were when he was fucked up because his notes actually showed the truest sorrow and misery a man can experience, and I respect him for openly showing the dark side of life that so many people arent brave enough to unleash. Any time I deal with my demons I think about stevie losing control of himself yet being so pure at the same time, which shows me theres always someone suffering worse and that I should love every day because stevie still loved life even though his problems were worse than anyone you know. How many guys do you know that ran away from an abusive home at 14 after drinking liquor daily since age 6 and STILL was a nice positive guy to everyone who ever met him. RIP stevie, and fuck that dumbass helicopter pilot.

Im not saying you are wrong but i agree with this guy completly. There is even an interview where srv talks about it. He says not only does he play better he hears better. There is a definate difference. Listen to soul to soul era and after in step. The last year or 2 of his life he was not human. BB king talks about how when he played was like talking. He said when he played he would say a sentence but when srv played it never stopped. He said he didnt have that ability nor does anybody else really. That is bb king saying that. Clapton said kinda the same thing said he was an open channel. Think it was more imagination soul and feel than ability but his tone is better than anyone ive ever heard. No telling how strong his hands where.

Eric’s first solo at 1:57 is very well thought out -and I like his phrasing, almost pristine like the stain-glass cutting he once did in Art School-but fresh with dazzling sparkles of gem-like notes. Stevie’s solo at 3:38 is raw and powerful with a great roar from the audience at note 1. Also, I really enjoyed the collection of stock photos of both, with subliminal message and wit -upon the dissolve editing. Some of the photos are quite rare. This video is worth repeat enjoyment and study.

Sounds like they were having a lot of fun, and they left that stage I bet thinking wow, what a good time:) You do not have to judge them, or say who is better etc. They didn't think that I am sure, they were jamming and appreciating each other's talent, saying yeah, this is cool....just my thoughts on it...or...God, a string better not break, or, damn those lights are bright, etc. I simply enjoyed the song:)

Roland Lemus they were great friends, much like Clapton and Hendrix. People dont seem to understand these guys only got better by playing together. BB King often spoke of his adopted brother Eric and adopted son Stevie. No other words could say more.

Like always, I will always remember where I was , driving over a bridge back home in Vancouver on a stormy night, lightening, when I heard on Rock 101fm SRV plane went down, forever in my heart! Could you imagine SRV a few more years on? Like Jimi Hendrix? So so sad, huge loss, I love the blues, many concerts, many, gets into your soul, kick back, lala land! However ....... Blues is what I was raised on so this really hit me and many hard. Respect SRV*

Stevie blew Eric away, what a Guitarist he was, taken too soon. Hand him back God don't be so selfish! Let us mere mortals enjoy his playing live in concert once again, you will get him back eventually to play more gigs for you. Just think we will all be Saints, so we can pass through those pearly gates to listen to Stevie for eternity.
