Wonderful rendition of a light English classic, one of my very favourite pieces.

Several years ago, our eldest granddaughter played cello with the Northampton Junior Youth Orchestra and went to see her first concert with them. We were half expecting some youngsters scraping away on not quite in tune violins and the other instruments: they opened the concert with this wonderful piece and we were absolutely riveted m they were phenomenal.

How can not enjoy British light music? It's so light, it's fluffy! Thank you, WDR Funkhaus Orchester. 💝

I like the beat......Coates may have played it 10/20 beats faster..... But Eric Coates is in my top 3 composers......
@MrDaiseymay2 ай бұрын
IF YOU GOOGLE 'ERIC COATES' THEIR IS A EXCELLENT HISTORY OF HIM, ONE OF OUR GREATEST AND MOST SUCCESSFUL COMPOSERS, WHEN FIRST HEARD ON THE RADIO, THE BBC RECEIVED 50,000 REQUESTS FOR IT'S TITLE. AND SOLD TWICE THAT IN RECORDS. 1933 I BELIEVE. WHICH WAS A UNKOWN RESPONSE FOR THAT PERIOD.

ALL THE FAMOUS, MOSTLY SHOW-BIZ PEOPLE ,WHO HAD ARRIVED OR ABOUT TO LEAVE LONDON, AFTER STAGE OR FILM WORK. OR SIMPLY, ANYONE WHO WAS NEWSWORTHY AT THE TIME. THAT PROGRAMME LASTED 30 PLUS YRS, UNTIL 1960.

very nice arrangement -- smallish orchestra & inclusion of a piano are an effective combination

Nope... sorry. The tempo is just too slow, to the point of plodding. Coates wrote and conducted this at a fast tempo, with verve and vitality in every note. This performance, whilst technically excellent... just misses that lilt that defines British light music.

IN THE END, WE ALL HAVE OUR PREFERENCES. I'VE NOT SEEN ANY CLAIM, THAT IT SHOULD BE A QUICK MARCH. AS A 83 YR OLD, I REMEMBER THE MUSIC AS THE INTRO TO THE BBC RADIO PROGRAMME, ' IN TOWN TONIGHT'' FROM THE LATE 1940'S TO THE END, IN 1960. ALSO MANY RECORDINGS FROM OTHER SOURCES. BOTH SLOW AND QUICK.
