HOW TO DESENSITIZE YOUR DOG

Man I wish this was out when my first big dog was still alive. I was only twelve trying to figure out how to desensitize him to loud noises, fast cars, kids screaming, dogs barking, etc. He was never trained and had issues I couldn’t quite fix due to his previous owner and my lack of resources (age, money, and he was going to be sent to a kill shelter). I’d train him everyday after school for literal hours trying to make his life easier so he’d be able to have freedom. I was never fully able to get him to chill around cars since he did unfortunately end up getting hit by one head on. I’m so glad theres video’s out like this now to help people. I appreciate your knowledge immensely so I’ll be able to train my next dog better and it’ll save me tears lol. Thank you so much, I hope you and your pups have a lovely day.

I think the best thing about this video is how well it shows the amount of patience you need and the amount of consistency needed. This is not an over night process and your constancy is key 👌

Everything fell apart at the dog park. My intention was to socialize my dog who I got from a family that neglected her and didn't socialize her. She got beat up by a couple huskies at the dog park and became reactive to dogs where she thinks she needs to defend herself. I just didn't know. We are working on expanding her world and making her confident through basic training. I think she needs to be muzzled for other people and dogs protection. I'm not giving up on her like her first family did.

This is the problem no one wants to admit about dog parks and socialization in general. Dog parks are the worst place to bring your dog. Especially if you're still training them, but even as adults. Find an open field if you don't have a back yard to train your dog on things that require space.

Same. I took my 10mo husky mix to a dog park and he had a blast running around. Wasn't until the next day I found his cheek was swollen and had puncture holes from a dog that snapped at him while he was sniffing his privates, but I didn't see him make contact or so I thought. Luckily my pup didn't seem any worse for ware. He just enjoyed meeting the friendly dogs that were there and doing zoomies.

You're a good trainer and I like that you're obviously a creative person. I think that a lot of people assume that dog training is some kind of sport. I suppose its a discipline but you need to be extremely in tune with the dog physically and you need to be present in your own body. For me, dogs have always provided that and I am always repeatedly inspired by the fact that they can actually provide me with calmness. I know that I need to be calm to help dogs who need it. It's funny because the longer you do it, the more reassurance you gain from the dogs who used to be insecure and used to be your "subject" for training. You become so close of friends that they help you. Thanks for your video!!! Also - I do want to add this: I am cynical of dog parks but they can be alright if you have a good community honestly. Depends on where you are. If people are on the same page and it's not a toxic spot it can work out. However, I am always on my freakin toes and I rarely go to them. I also work at a daycare. I utilize so much of my patience every day and I am rewarded so much with love and fun times. Dogs are forgiving and they have a sense of humor. Daycares are another topic I would LOVE to talk about. They can be so good and be so bad - but it has to do with where you GO! Choose daycares that have a reasonable human to dog ratio just like a childrens school. That's the biggest thing!

I have an absolutely perfect example of how crucial this training is just today. I was driving home from work where I stop next to this vet before turning, I stopped and all of a sudden I see a dog running on the road to my right. Almost got hit. When I got a moment I blocked oncoming traffic to let the woman recollect her dog and she did but still a horribly scary situation that damn near made me panic and I’m not even the owner

I use our Dog Park for exercise for my mostly Doberman. We will work off leash in it, because rarely are other dogs with us, or even in the Small Dog Park next door. I really need to do this desensitization with him almost every day.

How would you desensitize a reactive fearful dog?. it’s hard to get her to focus on me when she’s freaking out. I’ve tried leash popping. But getting her to snap out of her reaction so she will listen to my commands has been a challenge. I’ve been working on communication at home. But when we are out together daily she is quick to be aggressive. I can see it happening before she reacts. I’m just not sure how to stop the reaction. Any ideas?

Thank you. Your videos are helpful. I have a reactive JRT who will not tolerate being sniffed. I saw in one of your videos to divert the dog's attention before she gets too fixated on anything like another dog, a lawnmower, a motorcycle. So I have started to do that and so far, our walks seem calmer, not too chaotic. thanks.

thank you for this video! i love your confidence with your dog. my dog is very easily aroused/frustrated. her excitement really easily turns into anxiety. the walking in circles is a great idea so she can see the thing that is triggering her in small spurts and not hyperfocus!

When down mean down all of the time,is it just a matter of putting a dog down until they stay and then release when they have learnt down means down until I say otherwise.

Capri is so well mannered my dog has done back flips to get to another dog while he’s on a leash and he’s a very strong Boxer. Just started growling and being more aggressive this year last year he wasn’t aggressive. Would you say conquer the walks first then try this desensitization training? I get so confused of the order. Hi Eric, I apreciate your videos, are really helpful. But.. if your dog wouldn't much interested in treats as reward, how would you give her that reward for doing what you want? My dog many times does what I want but she is not waiting for a treat as reward because she is not interested that much in food, sometime she does but sometimes not. thanks :)

Is it okay to have SDIT sleep in the bed with the handler? I mean training wise, I prefer to have doc be in bed with me because of my anxiety and frequent tic attacks any advice?

for me, I think as long as the dog knows to wait for you to invite him or her up to the bed, then it's not a problem. When the dog is making the decision to jump on their own, that's usually a problem
