Eric Weinstein

Күн бұрын

On this episode of The Portal, Eric talks to close friend, neuroscientist, philosopher, author and meditation-guru, Sam Harris. When Sam and Eric sit down they generally agree about a large number of things. So in this experiment of a session, Eric attempts to push the relentlessly reasonable and methodical Sam out of his comfort zone to highlight their genuine differences. These include: beliefs on religion, the logic of voting for unreasonable candidates, Jeffrey Epstein's demise, the competence of the press, the ethics of immigration and more.
Note: This Episode was originally made possible by The Portal's returning sponsors.

Hahah it might very well be. And in another arena of entertainment/informative things like this podcast, I say that the line from one of Dave Chappelle’s recent Netflix stand-up specials in which he referred to the exchange between (I don’t want to misspell his name) North Korea’s leader as “rap battles” mocking in particular the (although this particular line wasn’t said in one of his inane Twitter tweets, if I remember correctly) “Fire and fury” comment. It captured my thoughts that I would be quite furious if I - a 29 year old with my whole life and 4 Avatar sequels ahead of me - were to die in the Doomsday Machine (the term coined by, if memory serves, Steven Pinker, to refer to way to the way the nuclear powers of the world have their defensive and offensive systems set up in such a way that if a nuke goes off from any country to another, the before mentioned systems will essentially almost completely automatically start launching nukes in such force that it would be a extinction-level event that Pinker calls the “doomsday machine” that we have constructed) being activated because of Tweets between Donald Trump and North Korea’s leader. At least have it go down on Reddit, if it has to happen in such an awesomely stupid game of chicken Trump played with North Korea considering that they had just built a thermonuclear weapon - whilst until the moment that it was discovered they had it (a discovery that was made initially by Japanese seismologists , not any military or intelligence agency or private contractor that constitutes the U.S. and it’s allies massive apparatus that should’ve been able to detect it) - we treated the North Korean nuke development program as a joke (at least publicly) - and Trump continues to do so. Yet I digress for the rant.

"TDS." I accept that syndrome with pride. Trump IS terribly deranged, and normal folk SHOULD react adversely to America having a lying psychopath for President. What Trump supporters forget is how many folk with TDS showed up at the polls for mid term elections, and in states like Kentucky, Louisiana and Virginia after that. And there's nothing better than a good case of TDS to bring people to the voting booth come November. Having a healthy case of TDS is a good thing. It's a badge of honor and normalcy.

Sam showed such courage to follow his logic regarding free will and he is a great inspiration and one of a dozen people that has caused me to sit up and smile for his intelligence....but ERIC WEINSTEIN is not afraid to seek the truth and when these intellects meet I am finding myself somewhat taking aback that Sam seems unable to adjust his beliefs in real time and take advantage of sitting with a teacher. I'd be honored to reach a level to be invited to this man's company. The things he doesn't know are the things I do not know and the things I have found he has found to an astonishingly more studied degree. I can't say enough about how in awe I am of his courage to see things for what they are, as free from bias as I have witnessed and without the need to delude. Eric, I just now discovered you, man. How have I just now? My goodness, I wish I had people to share this too that could understand you. Just slap some microphones on these guys, set them up in a cabin for 3 days, get some cameras, supply them with the required nourishments, definitely some alcohol, and have some editors cut the downtime to reveal a growth of conversation we won't experience outside of our own personal experiences. I'll be honest, I'm ~70 minutes in and I have no idea, for the most part, what Weinstein is talking about. I tried to digest his interview with Tom Bilyeu a few days ago and had a similar feeling. Minute to minute I can kind of follow what's being said, but on the whole it's damn near gibberish to me. The language used seems almost exclusively abstract metaphor, analogy, or in reference to situations that I have no knowledge about. Now, clearly, with so many people fawning over Eric Weinstein I'm sure there's something there, I just don't know what it is. If anyone can recommend something of Eric's that's more concrete and easier to digest, please let me know.

Well surprisingly I think I can answer. I myself can easily understand and find it curiously interesting and refreshing. He seems to be speaking at a certain level that completely acknowledges where it's at and the others who are here as well and stays at that level without having to diminish the depth and character of the conversation. He's saying we need to talk about this for those who are capable and we don't have time to hold any hands, so one needs to take some responsibility and get their self to a level to be able to comprehend such topics. Which could only be taken negatively if one wasn't aware of the difficulty of communicating higher ideas to a mass population the redundant time consumption and limitations on effect. Just means you got to put a little more time and effort into studying maybe philosophy and The human condition and how it came to be today. You can do it, but it's not a simple venture.

Agreed. Sam articulates his arguments and stances in a clear and coherent manner that I very rarely manage to misinterpret. Eric however likes to litter his speech with abstract ideas and metaphors. At one point during this interview he claims to completely disagree with Sam about a topic regarding "Trump" and then proceeds to give the most incoherent response as to why without even really giving a good counter-point. No doubt Eric is a smart guy but I think hes suffering from being able to translate whats going on in his head into coherent speech, its like he takes any subject at hand and makes it as difficult to discuss as a psychedelic experience.

I think one problem is these two are friends, and both are brilliant. Watch the stuff he does with more down to earth individuals that he doesn't seem to have as much of a coded language with first. Example: he was on Joe Rogans podcast a couple of times. Those are worth watching to help you understand how he thinks. In addition he did a Ben Shapiro podcast with Jordan Peterson that was eye opening to me. Joe is great at getting them to break down complex topics, JP talks at the same level and Ben understands optics to help bring things back as well.

Jake for "Sam" the reason you understand better because he shares more closely a similar perspective, I have spent much time putting others point of view into that of my own to help understand where others misinterpret things. It's just that Eric is speaking at a much higher intellectual level then most people are able to comprehend has to do with his whole idea of the "portal" which if you are not familiar with or have not experienced on your own this will sound completely alien to you along with most of what he says. @@Daniel____DiJ The problem is one you've created in your mind, I'm afraid. Consider that the Republicans aren't making career civil servants and war heroes the bad guys. What evidence is there for my counterpoint? They are very careful to reflect their admiration for the vast majority of these individuals, while also expressing their dismay, concern, outrage, etc. regarding the absolutely illegal behavior some in this community have committed. For example, going to a FISA court to obtain a warrant on a political rival's campaign staff with knowingly fraudulent evidence, as was the case with Carter Page, where an individual in the FBI altered evidence to promote the opposite view of what was given by others in the intelligence community. In this case, the FISA court was advised that Carter Page "was not" an intelligence source, when the information that was given by the intelligence community was that he was a source. When you see that these same individuals went to the FISA court with the Steele dossier, without admitting to the court that the veracity of large sections of the dossier, were in doubt, we have a problem that must be addressed. In the lead up to the election, I was actively defending the intelligence community, as a whole, having worked in such circles, and knowing the hard work conducted, and the dedication to professional service the vast majority possess. But, I've been incredibly saddened to learn that these events transpired in a community I still vehemently support. I, probably like you, was not a supporter of Trump. I didn't vote for him, largely because of his lack of interest in very important topics, of which he would now be the ultimate decider on many. In other words, both opinions can be held at the same time. And, if you're relying on the Democrats to abide by the rule of law, you'll have to wait longer than this year. The impeachment hearings are supposed to be designed as a bipartisan mechanism to check the executive. This is the opposite of a bipartisan impeachment hearing, which will only serve to divide us further. The Democrats had the opportunity to wait for the courts to hear their argument to override claims of executive privilege, but they decided the clock was more important that Constitutional norms and legal precedent.

@The Modern Stoic Though you have to admit hardly anyone reaches their potential. So how do you measure the actual potential? Learning is a completely misunderstood area. Babys and young kids are still learning naturally although attempts to "make them learn" are increasing. Those external attempts are acutally inhibiting learning. Noone who went trough the present "education system" can realize their potential. They are constantly held down...

it was a fancy word, but a stupid comment, imo (he was talking about the trump russia stuff for that bit I think, and referring to Trump supporters as lacking some kind of obvious morality that should have steered them away from voting for him, or for condemning him insufficiently at least). The problem with that view is that the version of Trump Sam subscribes to is a strawman. Every time I investigate the various claims against him, I'm underwhelmed at their basis in reality - he called mexicans rapists, he called nazis good people, he bribed ukraine (the latest greatest hit).... I'm just tired of it. If anything, he should be condemned for his false slanders, including the russia stuff - sam has no moral high ground on me.

Dear Eric. The biggest problem of our times is the following: we all know that we are going on the wrong road and the further we go the more difficult is to go back to take the right one. And because it’s so difficult and so painful to everyone in the short run to go back, we all prefer to pretend and emend little things as we keep going. but nothing is longer really believed or sacred. It’s like we are living a big lie and no one has the courage or power to stop it. In our subconscious we know what could unify us and give a meaning to the journey, but the designed system is not designed for big changes. We all see the wall in witch we will colide but not one will talk about it. We don’t need to suffer in order to change. Please give me your thoughts about this. Thanks for your time. Eurico

I was surprised they didn't link that to the fall of print journalism and the struggle to stay afloat has lead to character attacks, sensationalist, click bait articles and titles as a means of increasing views/ad revenue. Because for a couple of decades we have allowed, and even supported either directly or indirectly that type of writing and discussion. So what surprise is it now that a vocal minority, with the power to speak to a wide social media audience, saw the effectiveness of that type of thing, and now employ similar tactics? Attack the person, not the ideas, misrepresent them to cause outrage, cancel culture, political correctness over all else etc.

Scrolling through this comment section, I'm noticing there isn't a high representation of females in the audience (or at least the commenting audience.) Not that it's terribly meaningful one way or the other, I just thought this matter particularly curious being a female myself. I wonder if my being autistic/adhd/asperger's (whatever you want to call it) has anything to do with why I tend to find myself (more often than not) in the company of males with interesting ideas and opinions? Anyway, I know I cannot be the only female audience member and fan of Harris, the Weinstein bros (& Heather H.), etc. so if you are a woman and reading this, like or comment here. I'd love to see and know that there are more of us who either follow or entertain similar thinking to men such as these two, Sam Harris & Eric Weinstein. Curiouser & curiouser -- Andrea.

My girlfriends and I have been listening to Harris, Weinstein, Peterson etc. since early 2018. You'll find plenty of female fans on platforms like Reddit and Twitter! I think the trend you're noticing has less to do with neurodivergent inclinations and more so with just being on YT. 62% male user base and generally poor comments-to-views ratio compounded by recent crackdown on "borderline content" recommendations via updated algorithm = reduction in NEW female viewership. Keep in mind, I could also be entirely wrong lol.

The crucial point of this entire conversation resides on one person who tends to dwell in ideology-based thinking versus another person who dispels the rosy patina to get into viability and practicality of ideals and perspectives. Harris has a long way to go to play equally in Weinstein’s realm. It isn’t simply a matter of intelligence, it’s the degree of clarity that only unbiased honesty can produce.

One thing I don't like and even fear, looking at the situation from afar: Sam's notion that 40% of people don't share his values. It's not true and I saw this plenty in my ex-USSR homeland. The divide between us and them is obviously very dangerous but not even remotely applicable in modern US. There's no one or two core issues that could potentially cause such a thing. It goes beyond "my president is a dick" and "they don't like migrants and abortion". Guys, you must not let elites who always fight for power and resources make a cultural and intellectual dent in your society, in your thinking.
