Mine was doing so well over summer! I didn't change anything about where i kept it or how I watered it. Then a few weeks ago, it DIED. Slowly, one leaf at a time. Like it had root rot, but it didn't. I used a moisture meter because I knew these have a reputation for being death in a pot. It died at the same time in the same way as my red ripple peperomia. All my other plants in the same area were fine. The raindrop peperomia right next to it BLOOMED this week. Sigh. I think I might give up on any kind of corrugated leaf plant for a while.

Mine is so strange, I feel like I water it more often than any other plant I have. I have it in terracotta with lots lots lots of perlite in the mixture, so that could explain it. I bottom water mine when it droops, which is literally every week, even now in the Canadian winter!!
@ErikaLodes5 жыл бұрын
The perlite & terracotta probably are the reason! Or you just have a funky plant hehe
@jessicahobin5 жыл бұрын
Mine also gets watered at least once a week (and I don't bottom water) and mine is growing well in a nursery pot with well draining soil. I did not realize it was so prone to root rot! I'm going to take some cuttings ASAP haha. I didn't get it from a nursery though luckily. I'm also in Canada haha, maybe our air is soooo dry in the winter that it dries out our plants like crazy LOL

I also have the same situation! I was not aware of the root rot issue. I water my peperomia watermelon roughly once a week, still in its nursery pot and the soil is exceptionally quick draining. Thank you !! My plant started dropping a tiny bit nothing noticeable and I didn’t think much of it, since it’s winter in nyc I thought I’d leave it a day or two more without water. Well I screwed up cause when I watered it I noticed the leaves were hitting the floor and I gave it a few days to see if it would stand up but it never did. So I quickly propagated it and now I’m waiting for roots to grow. This is a plant that needs a strict schedule to follow 🤔🤔

Thank you for this video it’s very helpful!!!I got into houseplants last summer and wanted a watermelon peperomia so bad. I hunted everywhere and then after being on waitlists for so long I ended up with four when they got “in season”. I have one just like that 6 inch of yours, same color pot and same hanging wire. It’s the one that has stayed the healthiest! I got one in the mail and it had very peaty and wet soil so it died :( and I bought another one at Anthropology and it also had very peaty soil so I eventually repotted into better soil in a porous pot and it’s still alive but ugly. I had to keep moving that one around because the leaves would get big black spots from drafts perhaps? The other two are in their nursery pot and are the healthiest even though they have what seems like crappy soil that dries into a solid dry sponge but I guess it keeps them from being overwatered 🤷🏻♀️. I want to get good at propagating these because I don’t want to keep buying more, even though I have sucked at propagation thus far but I only do it when a plant starts to go down hill and I want to “save” it.
@sarahpierce7144 жыл бұрын
I know exactly what you mean about the solid dry sponge soil. What is that stuff?? I have a bunch of houseplants that came that way. They are all healthy, but I worry that the roots need aerating or something because it dries so hard.

Hey - Thanks so much for this thorough video, I am really enjoying your work! I was wondering if you might have any insight on dividing an established (mini) Watermelon Peperomia... I just bought a plant and think I killed it, immediately :S Two of the three clumps I re-potted have wilted quite intensely and show no sign of perking up after two days. They're in clay pots and I have watered them hoping that the roots will heal. The other, luckily, is fine!!! I thought I was gentle with the roots, but, obviously I was not. I'm quite new at houseplants, HAHA. Also luckily, thanks to your videos I set a bunch of leaf cuttings in soil as an extra prayer. Woohoo!! Would love to hear from you

I'm still so afraid of overwatering mine!! That is a really good tip, I forgot to mention the squishy leaves haha For water propagation, I would say it takes around 2 weeks for roots to show. But if there still aren't roots at 2 weeks, it should be fine if the leaf still feels healthy.

I have a question: Do you propagate immediately when they're small too? Please answer because I'm getting this plant, its arriving very soon.
@ErikaLodes4 жыл бұрын
I haven’t tried propagating very small leaves. The more surface area the leaves have when they are cut in half, the higher chance for success when rooting in soil. I would say as long as the leaf is fully grown, it should be good for water or soil prop. Since I’m not sure how small the leaves are, I can’t say for sure.

Erika, thank you for this very useful video! I’ve killed two watermelons and trying to use all your tips for the third! I repotted it into well draining soil and terracotta pot on Sat. It’s sitting on east facing window sill under a patio (bright indirect light). I am slightly concerned that it is drooping very slightly after a day. I thought it needed a small drink (the soil was bone dry) so I bottom watered for 10 min. The soil still feels super dry on top but I didn’t want to overwater it. To help it out I staked it to a bamboo stick. Is that a mistake? Why do you think it was drooping? Could it be transplant shock or dryness?

You're over parenting the plant, they dont need stakes, some plants need a bit of negelect, the owners ususally kill them.

Hi! i'm very new to peperomia. In fact i am currently awaiting my first watermelon pep to arrive :D Very exciting! Here's my question: With humidity, i have a medical condition which tends to be aggravated by humidity, so most of my plant babies who enjoy being in a humid environment, i just mist often and once in a while i take them into the shower to enjoy a nice humid steam bath. So i'm intending to take your advice and try to propagate immediatly when my plant arrives, so would it be okay to keep well misted instead of in a humid environment? or is this a plant that is going to really need a humidifier?

Good advice on propagating plants, especially the watermelon pep, when you first get them. I bought a string of dolphins from Home Depot (probably first mistake to even consider knowing their overwatering problem). Of course the roots were damaged and lost the whole plant even though top of plant looked healthy. (Turns out they had filled the top up with un rooted cuttings to make it look full). Urghhh! @ErikaLodes4 жыл бұрын
Hmmm it could be either! I keep mine where they get ambient light & some direct morning sun in an east facing window. So they do need sunlight. Also just use a spray bottle to water them. It doesn’t have to be too often, it can be once a week you give them a generous spray. The times where the leaves died for me, it was because the leaf wasn’t healthy in the first place. So that can also be a possibility.
