I literally want to scream my younger self to the ground because I wanted a "quick fix" and instead of trying to learn over time, I decided to just continue the way I always drew and I stagnated. Everyone should realize that you really have to practice and LEARN to become better, otherwise you'll stay where you are

I want to do the same thing but my regret is letting people’s opinions stop my learning of art. Then I started to be critical of my own art because it didn’t meet people’s standards of good. Now I’m picking it up again, I see how important time is in order to get better at something, if only my younger self would have known.

As far as I know, using reference can teach you to copy In a easier way. You see a reference, you try to draw it with lines and shapes. Over a period of time, you will learn how to draw things by dividing into simple shapes and lines. Right now, I masted the art of coping by using reference, but now I have to start drawing by not using reference. So yeah, using reference can help you till an extent. I hope I am not wrong. 😅

I am a perfectionist and it ruined my motivation for art. I stopped drawing for more than 3 years and all these years I have been feeling so anxious and guilty that I couldn't draw at all. These few days, I'm slowly working on the drawing that I didn't finish back then in 2016. This video came at the right timing, I'm glad that it tells me more than just "keep on practicing". Although I have to relearn so many things, I'm going to make sure that I don't stop drawing ever again.. Thanks for the great video!!
@simonagalova69464 жыл бұрын
Same here! I studied at a terrible art school. All the time I listened that my drawings are "too anime" or we've listened how much we suck in something - literally in everything. Well ... critique is fine, but that was just too much, because in the end we had a feel that we're not good in nothing. And all the time I've been trying to go away from anime style, even thought it wasn't that much anime or I was trying to draw something in Disney style, because "that was the right style" according to teachers. And that was sooo wrong. After I eneded that school I wasn't able to draw for 2 years, because when I grabbed a pencil I felt anxious and guilty like you, I felt like.. I sucked all these years, why do I even try. And now I started to draw again and I started to feel happy about it. Funny thing? I started to learn drawing tips from the internet and I quickly became so much better than on school, also I lost my "anime" style because I just learned the right ways (shapes) how to draw. Sorry for the long text, wanted to share my story. We shouldn't give up anymore :)

Sometimes I think I've been too hard on my self concerning my art and it's all just because I desperately want to get better, sometimes no matter what I draw I'm never satisfied and I keep seeing the mistakes I make despite the time and effort I put into that piece, the whole process sometimes makes me depressed and then I take a break for a while and start all over again and it just seems like I'm not improving, worse is that I don't even think I have an art style yet cause I draw a lot of random things
@jamesharden83244 жыл бұрын

@marienguessan85204 жыл бұрын
Sorry that you experience it. Are you that hard on yourself in other aspects of your life? Do you compare your art with others? Do you break it down a little bit (into smaller details/compose)? It's okay to not having/knowing your style yet, I don't and I used to be frustrated too. But less now because I don't focus too much on the end result but the process, if it's not good today, it will be someday and I can fix what I can. It will never be perfect. This video is by far one of the most helpful "how to improve" art video I've seen. I've been drawing seriously for five or six years now, and because I'm having to take the semester off from art school due to this Covid situation, I've decided to really focus on growing my art abilities and preparing a portfolio for an internship. So I've been searching for like the last 2 weeks to gather advice, and this is the first video where I'm like "I'm going to have to watch this again just to write everything down" because there is just SO much useful information in here! Like other videos would suggest using references or drawing frequently, but not *how* to use references and study them or *what* to draw when drawing frequently. I'm just gonna leave this comment here (even though I barely comment on the internet) because I just needed to say it. This video is SUPER helpful and is inspiring me to pick up a pencil right now to go apply these things to my art. So THANK YOU! I really, really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to give such helpful advice to all the budding artists out there!

This was super helpful especially when it comes to references. I actually will sketch or break down parts of the photo as you showed it helps me with joint structure, even though I used to think it was cheating. I hate that the internet pushes this narrative that learning and using reference is cheating like what? Talented artists didn’t just wake up one day and understand everything. It often takes years and years to get to their level because there’s a lot that goes into understanding the workflow, tools, and the fundamentals. I never thought of making a video for poses, so I’m going to try this. I’d rush with a camera timer, but a video is a lot smarter!

Hi Erika, ty for the vid. I'm a newbie artist. Just been drawing for a month and focusing for now in face ilustrations. Love drawing female faces as they seem more fun to draw, but i'm in kind of a "crisis". I hate drawing from a front perspective, and profile view is really hard for me, so i've been focusing in 3/4 views. The thing is most of the time i feel all my drawings are the same, even if they're different persons/characters, and i'm afraid of what others can say about it, specially the "dude your drawings are so similar one to another". I know 3/4 perspective is used much more than a front view, but i don't know what to do to get this feeling away.... Thanks in advance in case you read this, love your content
@noylasri94124 жыл бұрын
Hello :) you could also try to play with the angles and lighting, those might make your drawings look different even when they are all in 3/4 view. Of course practicing will eventually get you to drawing front and profile too, I’m sure :) good luck and have fun drawing!
@koyo50884 жыл бұрын
Focus on the eyes. Make some eyes more circular, make some more triangular. Eyes can make a big difference when it comes to the face. For the front view, just start with a circle, draw the face in it, hen outline the face where you want the jaw to be and stuff. Hope that helps.
