I'm making ham & bean soup for christmas eve when the very small family members I do have left stops by. Only thing is, I'm using smoked shanks. I used a couple today in ham, green beans and potatoes and they were awesome. I did get a country ham for christmas dinner, but have had ongoing health issues and will have to postpone my dinner. I'll definitely be saving the bone and any scraps I get off it to make broths. Your soup looks wonderful. Thanks for sharing such wonderful recipes and great tips. As good a cook I "think" I am, I'm always learning new tips from all you youtube chefs:^) You guys are wonderful.

Nothing wrong with using smoked shanks, they offer delicious flavor just like a ham bone. I appreciate you stopping by and your comment. Wishing you a Merry Christmas, and good luck with your smoked ham bone soup!

Great recipe, mate. Just want to add that smoked turkey legs work just as well as a substitute for the ham bone if you don't have one. Now, I love ham myself but I have an uncle who is Muslim and, therefore, doesn't eat pork but the smoked turkey leg does the job, brilliantly. Smoky, salty, and meaty. Same for French Canadian split-pea soup. Any cook will tell you that it is the bones that gives soups and stews their deep; rich flavour. Yum! I also like to add a dash of turmeric (for the health benefits as well as colour) or curry powder... Mmmm baby, it is hearty good stuff for the autumn and winter months! Give me some crusty French bread and a good local IPA or cider and it is the perfect dinner, in my opinion.

Thanks for the comment and the suggestion about the smoked turkey leg, an excellent alternative. I also agree it is a perfect dinner, especially when it is cold outside and snowing. Thanks for stopping by!

Nice video! It just so happens, my beans are almost finished soaking and our New Year's ham bone is on the stove, simmering, as I type, so I sat down to take a break and saw your video. Your recipe is very similar to mine, but I don't add potatoes and I cook it all on the stove top. Yours looks scrumptious! This is a huge favorite in our family. Even when we're eating New Year's Day dinner, the boys are asking me when I'm going to make "the soup"! They could smell it getting off the school bus today! I could hear them screaming, "SOOOOOOUP NIGHT!!!!" all the way to the house. Haha! The UPS and FedEx guys both said you can smell the soup all the way up the drive and onto the highway and said they plan to come back at dinner time!! 😄

@@SmokingBBQ Hey there, I finished the soup this morning, only thing, I did different was I cooked my beans for a hour. After soaking them all night. I left it on the stove for 1 hr. Then I rinsed and put beans in the crock pot. Everything else I did exactly like yours. The reason I rinsed the beans is I wanted a thinner soup. Let me tell you, it's the best bean soup I've ever had. Even my husband tried it and he doesn't like bean soup. He said it was the best and couldn't wait to eat it. I don't wanta say it's better than my moms. But even my mom would say it's better than hers... Thank you so much for the recipe. ♡ I look forward to watching your other recipes. ❤ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🏆

After you've added all the ingredients except the ham at this point, when you say "simmer" do you mean on low or high for a few hours? I am following this recipe right now, have had the ham bone, chicken stock, 4 cups of water on high for two hours, scaled back to low for now. BTW, loved your part about the beer, we are very similar with this.
@SmokingBBQ5 жыл бұрын
Usually I need to put the slow cooker on high to get it simmering, then I dial it back to low or simmer. I hope you are impressed with the soup. Please let me know how it turns out.

Do you not put the meat pieces from the ham bone back in after they have been removed? Why do they get removed? Thanks in advance
@SmokingBBQ4 жыл бұрын
Later in the video I put in several cups of cubed Ham into the soup. I removed the Ham from the bone and cubed them up. You need to remove the bone otherwise you will not have enough room in your slow cooker for all the ingredients. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for stopping by!

Can you put a frozen ham bone in the crockpot?
@SmokingBBQ5 жыл бұрын
Sure. Just put some liquid in and let it heat up. A bone is only providing flavor for the soup, no need to be concerned with the temperature of the bone, as you are not eating that.

You wouldn't believe how great your soup looks now but it would be even better if you would have dumped one or two beers in your soup and cooked for a day. I put beer in almost all of the homage soups that I make and it really zips up the flavor just a little bit. Try it sometime and you may or may not like it but then you will see what I mean by the flavor it adds. But Believe me when I say that yours looks delicious and you have my mouth watering for a bowl of it now with some fresh corn bread to go with. Thanks and you and your family have a great holiday.

I have never added beer to soup, but always due with my chili. Will try that next time, thanks for the suggestion!

Why didn't you leave the bones the entire cooking time ? That's supposed to be the important part ?.thanks.
@SmokingBBQ3 жыл бұрын
I let the bone simmer in the slow cooker overnight, which is more than enough time for the broth to take on the flavor from the bone. I removed it so the rest of the ingredients would fit in the slow cooker. Thanks for stopping by!
@drwgisblaidd26503 жыл бұрын
After simmering all night, all the flavor would be out of the bone, and in the broth, all it would do now is take up space.

Slow cookers are the most inefficiant useless cookers. No insulation. It is like having your toaster on all night. Use an instant pot.
