I wanted to see the forests, rivers and huge, open Plains. Maybe travel by train to see more of it. The country, people and culture seemed to be different from the old 'Cold War' image that had made me cautious (I'm old enough to remember seeing people killed trying to escape the GDR.) I hoped that Russia was becoming an open, friendly member of the world community. The events of 2014 in Ukraine brought me back to reality. Putin invaded Ukraine, for fanciful reasons that are becoming more and more crazy. The worst part, though, is that the Russian people seem to support him with an ever increasing hatred of 'The West'. The willingness to kill hundreds of thousands of people over some land and imperial dreams is disturbing. Trust, sadly, will take a long time to return.

It is actually a US proxy war meant to weaken Russia by using Ukraine as the sacrificial lamb. Ukraine loses its people but the politicians become millionaires, the EU suffers by supplying money and weapons to Ukraine most of which is unaccounted for. The Ukrainians are the real victims, the cities are bombed, many Ukrainian soldiers died. Even though Ukraine wanted on several occasions to negotiate to end the war, the US would not approve it because the US intelligence has greatly under estimated Russia's military strengths and superiority. And the war drags on. Until recently, with the American people under greater economic difficulties, do not want to spend so much defence budget on Ukraine when the money can be better spent peacefully to help local American people who are struggling to live. Besides, most likely 85% of Americans don't even know where Ukraine is or that Ukraine and Russia share many historical, language, religious, ethno-cultural ties over time and these relationships are respected by both the Russians and Ukrainians. Much of the ongoing war is the consequence of the US that makes the decision. Zellenskyy is a figure head, well paid for his playing his role. NATO weapons and materiels are getting depleted. EU is getting deeper into inflation, it's industrial sector is dwindling and EU has a weaker economy now than in Feb 2022. Only USA is profiting from its proxy war. It is making a killing with its LPG needed by the EU, even at 4 times the market rate, after the two Nord gas pipelines supplying Russian gas were sabotaged. What's happening with this war is much like the US misreporting world events like the invasion of Iraq and several M/E countries by flippant and irresponsible journalism that accepted false and manufactured propaganda as authentic news and the demonizing of M/E countries with WMD, Terrorism as gospel truth. Whereas, 75-80% of the world countries knew it as unfiltered war propaganda, doctored intelligence, flippant allegations. What applied to the wars in the M/E in the 2000s are also applied to the Ukraine/Russian war in the 2023-present. Namely, the preservation of the US as the only hegemonic world power. Any country with rising economic and/or military powers become automatically the enemy of the USA. This ego-centric, narcissistic old fashioned world view of supremacy and "top dog" contains the germs of perpetual wars and turmoil around the world.

No biggy, you're not missing much. I've been to St Petersburg, Moscow & Murmansk and the only impressive thing are the churches. Travel a mile outside any of these places & it's a soul destroying eye opener. People living in houses without windows, roofs, no or very limited electricity, but the churches are pristine with golden domes. Locals will come up to trains to beg you to buy an apple off them. I made an elderly woman's day, I gave her 10,000 rubles for her 5 apples. She nearly fainted. That money would likely feed her for a month. I had no use for it, I was on my way home!
