My parents are anti cat people due to stereotypical opinions they hear from their friends that have never owned a cat. Though after many years of me trying to get my parents to let me buy myself a cat to take care of, I was finally able to convince them when I figured out that being around cats or petting them brings down my anxiety levels.

I literally have the same story as you and I have finally convinced my parents but there are a few things that I am worried about. My parents don’t know as much about them so they are like fine you can get one but if they see the cat scratching their furniture then they will get super mad cause they are not prepared.

Unless they have allergies, why do you care about their opinions? My dad hates cats but he’s not the one who’s taking care of it so he has no word about it. It’s your own money anyway. I got a pet chicken recently and my parents won’t judge one bit :)

Minty Mischief make a PowerPoint to try convince your parents.but please if you do adopt I know kittens are tempting but there are many in shelters that need homes and in most cases will b out down if not adopted. Also pet shops are usually cruel breeding by buying from them its supporting and paying for more pets to be cruelly bred. Breeders are sometimes good sometimes not.

Minty mischeif: I would NEVER reccommend getting an animal from craigslist, you have no clue where the animal came from, be it puppy or kitten mills, theft, etc., same with stores, their animal "stock" often comes from mills, sad but true, animal shelters on the other hand, offer no "pedigree" info, but you know the animal is in desperate need of a good home, and isn't helping them really the most important consideration?

To anyone teetering on the idea: I got a kitten last August, and he is the best thing that ever happened to me. I love him like he is my literal baby. But keep in mind: Cats tear everything up. Curtains and bed sheets will be ruined. Leather couches? Pfft, now they are scratching posts. Litter boxes are the worst to clean, and sink terribly after a few days. Cats love attention, so if you are only getting a single cat, it will pester you constantly because it's bored. They get into everything, but you will love them unconditionally.

Sydney McFarland Have you attempted to cut your kittens claws? We cut Bertie's claws every 2 weeks and we don't have any issues with ruined furniture since he has no need to scratch anything. yes, we do, it's just since he was a kitten, he was very very hyper all of the time, and we had to be very attentive to him because he is a curious cat.
@LaChichi1
@LaChichi1 4 жыл бұрын
Try having a more regular play schedule or increasing play time and try getting more scratching posts scratching toys etc. If they are hyper then they are not releasing enough energy which you can help with through play. Also there is a sticky tape kind of thing you can purchase to put on furniture which deters them from scratching because they don’t like their paws getting stuck on the tape. My sister cleans her litter boxes once a day and I rarely notice a scent.

@rachelthomas9179

Maybe, the brush is hurting her tender skin, especially if its a wire brush. You could instead use a Cat comb that has the thin close together teeth and does a very good job of removing loose hair while grooming.

Also if you want a fluffy cat but you don't want to groom it everyday so it doesn't get matted, you should get a ragdoll cat because they are fluffy and their fur doesn't get matted, and you can hold them almost any way you want and they won't really care so they are good for children too. My cat is a ragdoll cat.

@@unclesam1326 Ragdolls, if I'm correct, cost quite a bit. Anywhere from 400+ for a purebreed. I know it doesn't fix the fur problem, but if you want a ragdoll and can't afford it just look for a fluffy cat that has the visuals of a siamese. For all you know it could have some ragdoll in it?

3:38 Never give your cat a bath !!!! That is really not necessary. Cats wash themselves daily and spend a lot of time there. A bath is unhealthy for them, it causes unnecessary stress. Also sterilize / castrate your cat before he / she is 6 months old. You can already do this if they weigh 1 kilo. Give them a lot of toys if you want to keep them indoors, then they won't get bored and make sure you have a few cat scratching posts, otherwise they will use your furniture already scratching post. But if you can leave your cat outside, then they are really happy. I have 3 cats (neutered and not because it's the law here, but for their health) and I don't live in the city center. They always play outside. I also foster kittens for the shelter.

Hi Erin! Love your videos, I recently adopted two Syrian hamsters, one from a breeder that couldn't sell him because he had earmites when he was young and now his ears are weird he's half a year old, and one from a family where the child was apparently allergic, he's a year old. I started binge watching every episode you have because they are weirdos and I couldn't find some of their behavior previously, haha. However I do already own two cats from a shelter and I wanted to press this to people: please adopt!! Shelters are stuffed with great cats of all varieties, and you can even get a kitten if you're there the right time of year. They are not broken or weird, they are just homeless. I promise you the right cat for you is in there!

I'm ready for a cat. but in India a high breed cost more than 20000$. I couldn't adopt a cat becoz we don't have a shelter for cats. and the only way is to adopt a ferrel kitten. and the chance of that happening is very rare. indians usually don't consider cats as an option for indoor pets. there are a lot of misconceptions. I used to have 3 outdoor kittens and I lost them in different accidents and 2 of them were killed by stray dogs. so I decided to keep one completely indoor and I had done alot of research for the past 7months. I thought I will b getting a kitten this season but it didn't happen. I've already found a vet near me who checks cats(a lot of vets don't treats cats in here), a pet store and everything. I think I'm ready.

since it's adopt a cat month, you may want to keep in mind a couple of things, people don't generally adopt black cats, silly superstitions still persist, adult cats, everybody wants a kitten, right? or bonded pairs, be they litter mates, or were raised together, so these cats are often the last to leave the shelter, once we learned this my husband and I decided to only adopt adult black bonded pairs, and it's been great!

My cat is a 100% indoor cat. She has access to windowsills with the windows partially open. The Windows have mesh screens so she can't escape. Everyday the same birds sit on the fence outside the windows and tease my cat. They chirp at her and she makes the same chirping sound. Then they will fly off to a different part of the fence and call her and she will run to the adjacent window. This can go on for hours a couple of times a day. 😃

A little note on letting your cat outside, not only does it add a risk to your cats health but also to other animals. Especially here in Australia outdoor cats are not hugely popular as they have a tendency of killing native animals and other small outdoor pets like rabbit or birds. Make sure you consider those around you when lookig into buying a cat

There are so many cats looking for homes (depending on where you live). I found one in my basement which adopted me so to speak. Still figuring out if a cat is right for me and my fiancé, my finacé's parents are having a divorce and are rehoming all of their animals and the only one they considered keeping is their cat. We offered to take him in if they were going to rehome him and they gave him to us to do a "trial run". Especially seeing if he gets along with our bunny. Honestly have been wanting a second bunny over a cat, but he has been doing good, and the bunny seems to like him but the cats kinda uncomfortable around him. I never had a cat prior and I'm now doing research and there's so much things that are kinda overwhelming. I spent a year researching bunny care and I'm still learning about how go care for them properly even though I've had him for a year

Can indoor cats get worms?
@SomethingAnimal
@SomethingAnimal 8 жыл бұрын
Technically, yes but it's very uncommon. If they come into contact with an already infected animal such as someone else's outdoor pet or a dog (since dogs have to go outside every day) there is a small risk but this can easily be avoided by regularly protecting those outdoor animals with anti parasite treatment. There is also an even smaller risk of you bringing in parasites on your shoes and clothes which can be transferred to house pets, but again these risks are very small and the chances of that happening are very unlikely :)

I'm sorry I'm leaving so many comments (heh I'm a cataholic) but I've got so many expensive toys for Willow (my kitten) and she plays with lapsed wrappers, plastic, and anything she finds on the ground and occasionally a toy I've got on her. Her favorites are plastic bottles caps. Also if you do get a cat, research body language!!! Cats body language says a lot. You can tell if their comfortable, angry, scared, annoyed, ect. It's so important when you want to bond with a cat.

Wow Erin, this video was so informative and I agreed with everything. I am indecisive between Cats and Dogs, they are both very similar between characteristics, many say Dogs are better because they are more energetic and you can take them our for walks however its they same for cats, you can take cats for walks (I have, I get strange looks but as long as Oscar if happy then that's good) and they can become very active, for example: Oscar runs around the house, meowing all the time. I do call him the 'comedian' of the house for a reason, I love cats, they are hilarious, I 100% agree that cats do change your life forever and would make you want 100+ of them little furballs hehe. Overall, I loved this video so much and I defiantly can agree with what you have been pointing out! :D

I've been told by Vet's and other information I've read that you should never feed your Cat milk, because Cats are lactose intolerant additionally will give them diarrhea. Giving them the Canned Wet food is Great, because Cats are obligate carnivores and biologically it is Meat that provides their nutrition also it provides water making up for the scare amount of water a Cat will voluntarily drink because Cats have a natural low thirst drive, another reason dry food is bad for a Cat. Dry food is not necessary, but if you do, it should be rarely given and just as a snack, like a small teaspoon. Its hard for a Cats body to break down Dry food so over a period of time the dry food can cause intestinal problems, also a much greater amount of water they need to drink daily because, otherwise, the dry food leads to dehydration for the Cat. Did you know that most manufacturers spray dry food with a taste enhancer to entice the Cat to eat it, otherwise the Cat , who wants Meat, would have little interest to eat it. Remember, that by nature cats are a predator, regardless their beautiful pussy cat quality that they have, which I love!

If your scared about the 18 year dedication then just adopt an older cat. Then just adopt a teenage or older cat. They need a home just like kittens, but are often neglected or forgotten, because people think kittens are cuter. Kittens are constantly trying to adopt a kitten, but the older cats are left behind and can be put down if they don't find a home.

I STRONGLY AGREE! I am an elder person age73, and I'm looking to adopt and seek an older Cat primarily so there's less risk that I will die before it reaches age18 then it would be homeless if I previously died.. I would prefer a Cat of 12years old, but no younger then 10years is acceptable. Also, its true that older cats have less chance for adoption so I know I'd be serving a more humane purpose while also my practical intent as regards age.

Erin, can you tell me what happened to my cat? About 3 years ago my family got 2 cats, Patches and Lulu. All was well until my family went away for 2 weeks. [We did get a friend to pet-sit] But, when we came back , Lulu would hiss and growl at us and Patches ALL THE TIME! She also would try to get out whenever she [Lulu] got the chance. Over the summer, we had a big reno and the workers left the door open so Lulu got out. So Lulu usually does this: Meows from the outside of the front door to be let in, hisses at the person who let here in, hisses and/or growls at anybody and Patches, eats, then meows at the back door to be let out! Lulu is also very mean to Patches. what happened to Lulu!? Patches is really sweet! Please tell me what happened and we can get Lulu to be nice!!!
@dri3dmang0es
@dri3dmang0es 9 жыл бұрын
Is Lulu spayed? It could be because she reached sexual maturity and if cats are not spayed or neutered at that time, they can get aggressive and escape to outside, to find a mate. And other reason could be that she must've been shocked or offended that you left her for such a long time (even with a sitter) and she had behavioral issues. I'm not an expert, so you should talk to your vet, or Erin.

I am nearly 16 and thinking of fostering kittens. But next year I am starting my senior years of school which require obviously a lot more studying. How much time would kittens require daily and would they be ok home alone for 8 hours in one go? Of course I don't need to take into consideration the high commitment because they are only fosters, but how much play and maintenance time do kittens need? Thanks :) I have never owned a cat but I currently own two dogs.
@SomethingAnimal
@SomethingAnimal 8 жыл бұрын
+Maija K You could probably foster older kittens (say 10 weeks and up) but younger kittens couldn't be left alone for so long. I would suggest starting by fostering a pair of older kittens that only need a week or two of care and see how you get along. Kittens are very needy animals that require regular feeding (3 - 5 meals a day) and lots of play to prevent them from becoming lazy. Fostering a pair will allow them to keep each other busy while you are out but you should also provide a wide range of kitten-safe toys. You will likely find they aren't litter trained due to their age so be prepared to come home and find little "presents" in unwanted places. Kittens tend to sleep in lots of short burst rather than in just a few long naps like adults do so they will be awake for a lot of the time you are out. You'll need to ensure they are somewhere safe and secure keeping in mind that kittens are highly curious and can get to places you would never imagine they could reach. It's also best to keep them away from the dogs while unsupervised just to be safe :)
@maijak8539
@maijak8539 8 жыл бұрын
+ErinsAnimals Thanks for the reply! :) Yeah I would foster older kittens, definitely not bottle babies or anything! And in pairs or groups of 3 I think. Have you seen MyaLuvsMax on youtube? I saw her set up and think it would work really well for us. What's your opinions on that set up (you can go look if you have time but it's basically a multi-level ferret cage to keep foster kittens in)? The dogs would be separated and maybe only introduced a few times in a controlled environment.

@SomethingAnimal
@SomethingAnimal 9 жыл бұрын
katieloves minecraft 20 Gallons is the minimum so technically it's fine however if you want the best chance at keeping the two happy together it's better to have as much space as possible. Ideally you'll want enough space for two wheels, two water bottles, lots of hideaways, multiple toys and space for them to get away from each other when they need time apart. Keeping pairs is delicate work so if you really want two hamsters together it would be better to get something bigger :)

What if you get your supplies and cat on the same day? Would that be an issue?
@SomethingAnimal
@SomethingAnimal 5 жыл бұрын
You ideally should have all of your supplies before you get your cat, since fabric toys and bedding will all need to be washed first, you'll need time to set up the cat's personal zones, feeding area, sleeping area, toilet area etc, and do all the cat proofing. It's more responsible to get the supplies at least a few days before bringing your cat home so they can start settling in immediately and don't have to wait in their carrier while you set everything up :)
