More remarkable than the comeback, the grand slam, the Red Sox tying it the next inning, Junior Felix's decisive HR in extras (after his inside the park grand slam a night or two before) and the fact that I remember being 10 years old rolling around on the living room carpet watching this on a Sunday afternoon - is that the final pitch of the game was a called third strike, despite Whitt having to reach across his body with no chance to 'frame' it convincingly. Glorious.

Ernie was my favorite player as a kid. Just a nice guy and a great player. 80's and Early 90's Jays were the best.

I wish someone would post 1) the Junior Felix inside the park grand slam earlier in this series, and 2) the Bruce Kison incident from 1985 where he hit George Bell and then Bell charged the mound with a karate kick, and then Ernie Whitt got revenge with a grand slam homer.

Look up Sky High, the story of the 89 Blue Jays. It has the NESN broadcast clip of the slam

With 9 outs to go. the Sox blew a 10-0 lead at home. Wow

Something about the Jays and Fenway - This and a game against the Angels in TO were their biggest comebacks after down 9 or 10 runs and a few years ago they blew out the Red Sox 22 to something I believe? Anyhow it was also at Fenway - The biggest blowout they ever had. I would love to play in Fenway as a player - And no lead is safe lol😮

Ernie Whitt was the greatest catcher in Blue Jays history. With all due respect to Pat Borders, Darren Fletcher and Russell Martin.

Ranked by WAR its Russell Martin. For me its Pat Borders #1... with respect to legendary Ernie Whitt. 2 rings, 1 WS MVP....

@@bobabooey4537 That's all true. But I'm also factoring in duration of time with the Jays. Martin for instance wasn't with the Jays that long. Just 4 years. In the case of Borders, 2 World Series titles is a solid case, but did you see his WAR while with the Jays? It's not that good. Whitt's WAR was consistently in the 2-3 range from 1983 to 1989.

Love his voice and like Buck Martinez because he played he knew the game well - Couldn't hide his Yanker pride at times lol He played for them for years so understood. Chevy joked to Tony once that he thinks he had pin stripes on his diapers lol miss those guys

My brother and I were at this game. Mike Smithson started and was cruising until running into a little trouble in the seventh inning. Shortly after Lee Smith came in an inning or two later, my brother said, "He's not throwing any harder than Smithson," who threw junk. To make matters worse, Red Sox second baseman Marty Barrett tore up his knee in the bottom of the ninth inning while running to first base. He was never the same after that and retired the following year, I believe.

The Jay's gave my Sox fits in the late 80s.. The very first baseball game I ever went to was September 1988 at Fenway Park.. A magical childhood memory ruined by the Blue Jays beating the Red Sox 11-1 lol.. I still remember Dwight Evens hitting a solo shot over the monster to score Boston's only run and me and my brother going nuts like they won.. I say the Jays ruined it but it was still one of my greatest memories.. First time at Fenway Park.

This game was on 6/4/89. The Red Sox tied it with a run in the bottom of the 9th... but the Blue Jays scored 2 in the 12th inning on Junior Felix's 2-run HR and won the game 13-11

This game proves you should never accuse another team of being unsportsman like when not taking out their best players or running the bases hard in a 10-0 game. Practically no lead is ever guaranteed in baseball.

Yes. The Red Sox team doctor ended up getting sued because he may have knowingly withheld information about the severity of the injury. There was a conflict of interest from the team doctor also owning shares in the Red Sox
