Dan, This was without a doubt one of my favorite presentations to watch. Having traveled to seven locations in Islands in the Philippines while living there. You are so right about seeing a variety of places. Even if you only visit each one for a few days you can get a taste of the vibe and livable conditions and cost of living. This is such a practical way to do an exploratory visit not just to one location but several during the same exploration. Great stuff and excellent specific ideas given, really appreciate it.

Excellent advice. I know people who are planning to move without an exploratory trip first, and think that’s a risky way to go. Even if you have visited in the past as a tourist. Speaking as someone who was a diplomatic dependent and lived overseas for most of my formative years (mostly Latin America and Eastern Europe), I still feel the need to do exploratory trips for the purpose of deciding whether I want to retire overseas, and where. The other man’s grass isn’t always greener, and things change. I so appreciate your boots on the ground approach, and your detailed information. New subscriber here.

Pre-retirement Cluster Trips are a great idea for practical people. Clever the way you showed how the costs make sense too. Some people know where to move for family reasons, some take an impulsive approach, and the early planners doing TIm Ferriss mini-retirements. Different people, many options.

I would stick to 3 countries total for a cluster myself. 4 could be "TMI." It could even make the decision harder. For me I would think: 3x 10 days is a calendar month. Maybe skew it 12/9/9 w/12 days in the originally desired country to get an extra taste of that. *I've got to believe that if you visit 3 countries, you'll find at least one that takes your breath away* - especially in SE Asia.

Well said modification to a cluster. The more the better in each location. Newbies just have a hard time getting their head around more days in each place (30 days even better). But once they are there ... they will be glad they did.

Thanks! Fun! I love Thailand and Chang Mai has a great climate but Hua Hin is my favorite. You can keep the rest of SEA apart from Japan that is well worth a look. In Europe, my favorites are Portugal and Slovenia! Oh my word... Lisbon, Ericeira, Ljubljana and Bled ! And the people are great. I love Chile and Argentina in South America . Now my first question, Malta and Belize both have English as a primary language - is that important? (I speak a tiny bit of French, Spanish and Norwegian...). My second question, what about just going to Puerto Rico - Move abroad but stay in USA? My actual plan is East TN in spring and fall, summers in EU or asia alternating for friends and Family and winters on a sailboat in the Caribbean. Any good ?

Jumping around to different countries and only spending time at fewer places in each country doesn't necessarily give you a full taste of each country. As much as I love Vietnam after motorbiking from north to south this year, I still would rather stay in Thailand if I'm already there and save the hassle and travel time going to other countries. Because from Bangkok to Chiang Mai to Krabi can give you much more variety than Bangkok to Danang. But however you do it, get there!

Great information and suggestion for how to make an exploratory trip more productive but it doesn't really address the topic of the title. IMO, leaving the USA safely means securing your assets whether they are financial, property, medical, tech or business-related. I expected this video would advise how to protect what people have in the USA when planning to leave. The content of this video is more about leaving efficiently or cost-effectively rather than safely.

Thank you for the video, Dan, great information to know. I have a question I've asked on several other channels that no one has answered so far, and I was hoping you might be able to shed some light on it. Many videos will have Portugal, Panama, Costa Rica, and Mexico on a list of best places to retire. My wife and I have been planning a visit to Panama, and we also thought about staying in the areas you mentioned (Boquette and David (Dah Veed) because they are close to the Costa Rican border, and we could visit both countries on one trip. My question is about the income requirements for Mexico. There are two residency options, Temporary and Permanent, and they both have an income requirement. $4,300/month for Temp, and $7,300/month for Permanent. My question is, "How are so many people claiming this amount of monthly income to be able to retire there?" I recently retired from a six-figure position and will not be bringing in this amount of monthly income. How are they doing it? None of these other countries you mentioned, and the ones I just did, require anywhere near that amount to retire there. That is why this is so confusing to us.

@@VagabondAwake I knew that was possible, and my wife and I spoke about traveling between countries for 3 and 6 months at a time, but I didn't think the majority of the expats were doing that. Politically? You agree with authoritarian one-party plutocratic governments, no democratic voting, no rule of law, corruption at all levels? Ok comrade. Vietnam seems like a real possibility for me as well. It’s interesting that you would say you agree with them politically, because Vietnam is a communist country! We need to question our assumptions.
