Naomi Wright is the daughter of a pseudo-Christian cult leader. She was raised, yet hidden, within mainstream culture and public school education, where no one knew or the few with a sense of something, stayed silent. Now she holds a Master's of Science in Social Work from the University at Buffalo and is a licensed mental health professional in the state of Colorado. She also holds a Master of Arts in Christian Studies from Denver Seminary. Her areas of speciality include grief and loss, spiritual abuse, including cult abuse, as well as biblical and theological studies.

This was so interesting! I grew up in the Amish religion and have found so many similarities comparing it to other religions. I recently left the amish community, my parents refuse to see me anymore. I am a follower of Jesus now and He is worth so much more than anything!

But the Amish say they follow Jesus too. I purchase from an Amish farm, and they say follow Jesus. What makes that untrue?

I am Amish Mennonite. We drive cars. There are many Amish groups and they all are different. In Holmes County Ohio many Amish are born again and serve the Lord. We do events together with Old Order Amish. Just like in the Protestant church some people are not born again, so is in Amish churches. They are "old faith". Mennonites bare more evangelistic, but still hold onto principals of Early church. I have some Amish friends. They are definitely born again. But we also have very Conservative Amish( Schwarzentruber group). Those are very strict Amish and they are not Evangelistic. They have quite strict rules( for example , no orange color vest when hunting, no lights on the buggy etc.). They are close group and they don't intermarry with other Amish groups . This way they are trying to preserve the old way of life.

Welcome to the true gospel! I live in Missouri so we sometimes see the Amish around, but I've noticed the women never seem friendly, and it struck me recently that it's not very Christlike to be so closed off from other people, especially fellow Christians. I'm sure there are friendly Amish people but the culture is sort of closed off which makes it difficult to really share the gospel or the joy of Christ with other people. I'm sorry about your parents, but hopefully they know Jesus or will know Jesus and see you again with Him!

Welcome 🙏 to your Family 👪 in Jesus Christ 🙏 I'm so sorry your mom and dad did that to you, I know it cuts to the bone - I have bipolar and because of that my mother and father keep their distance. My sister got to move home twice and they just told me go to a shelter even though they know Jesus. Honestly I know there is a Spirit influencing their behavior - even inside the body of Christ Family 👪 I always thought a parents love was unconditional But I seem to be wrong about that - 💔 - But my saving Grace is Jesus Christ who when I'm lonely and crying 😢 in my room comfort me. They Have this misconception of who I am because I divorced the father of my children. Today my children live in New Zealand 🇳🇿 with him. I divorced him twice I tried to reconcile our marriage but he never did change. During our first divorce he told me he would make sure I loose my children - He stole all the money in the divorce, he basically used my rightfully earned money in the divorce to move to New Zealand 🇳🇿. Reason I'm telling you this about the divorce is because my parents didn't know who he was when I was married to him and how judas came out in him during the divorce. When the Bible talks about in the End times your children will put parents to death in my heart that is what my children did. It was a hard life in my house I didn't have money and when they went to him on weekends he basically bought their love. God bless keep strong in Jesus Christ

The amount of abuse in pentecostal churches in Africa is insane. I have come out of that, and looking at how leaders are appointed and whether there are checks and balances in place is one of the things that I have learned to look for. I'm settling into a smaller Baptist type church and really focusing on building my faith again.

I can totally relate as I entered a cult as a young adult and was there for many years. It was a type of religious community run like a socialist commune. When I finally left with my husband, we went to a reformed church that taught the Bible exegetically. Leaving the cult was an extremely traumatic experience. I’m so thankful for my church that showed us the love of Christ and didn’t judge us or think we were crazy. They patiently taught us the scriptures and who Jesus really is.

This is engaging on multiple levels. 1 because of the damage done to the people it effects and 2 because it gets associated with real Christianity even though it is wholly denounced and unbiblical. Praise God that you were able to see through the nonsense and still have faith in Jesus. I can't imagine how hard it is when a twisted ideology has turned your world upside down. Your faith is beautiful.

This is such a powerful and moving conversation. I loved what Naomi said -“ Let’s be the corrective experience. “ I think another sign of a safe church is, “ Tell me your story” without correcting or telling a person that they aren’t trusting God or having a lack of faith for expressing honest emotions which might be negative. God meets us where we are at and then transforms and heals us with his love.

@@ryanehlis426 "There is nothing wrong with the Holy Spirit " This is why you are a charismatic. You cannot think. Other than atheists, there is literally NOBODY in the world who is saying that there is something wrong with the Holy Spirit. The question is, is what these people believe about the Holy Spirit the truth, or is it a Satanic lie? Branham didn't "go off the rails". He was a two-bit con artist who suckered a lot of Biblically illiterate people, just like Copeland and Hinn and the rest of them.

They followed the teachings of Kenneth Haggin, Kenneth Copeland and the like, just to give you an indication of what it was like. I didn’t want to go there in the beginning, but my husband insisted and I “submitted”. We left the church after being shunned when our fourth child was born with a disability. Talk about being scarred.😢 It was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever gone through, let alone the fact that even my own husband couldn’t even come to terms with having a child with a disability.

My best friend is in the middle of going through exposing spiritual abuse. Her “pastor” of an IFB church has a history of preying on women who have had a difficult past and having inappropriate relationships with them. I thank God that He is exposing the darkness right now, more of which we will see as the Day of the Lord draws nearer. He is purifying His bride right now. I think people would be surprised how often this is actually happening at seemingly “normal” churches. I enjoyed this conversation and Naomi’s demeanor. I grew up in a polygamist religion. It was hell living with my abusive ex, hell trying to get out, and more hell with him lying and manipulating the legal system against me and dragging my children back in full time. There is abuse with the children in every way and no one will listen. My ex is a predator, sleeping with another girl who is 20 years younger than him, all under the guise of "just living my religion." There has been inappropriate sexual behavior towards the children as well. What better way for a predator to hide than one who can live polygamy and have many children using them too for his sick pleasures. There are some things worse than death -- in knowing your children are in an abusive home full time and nothing you can do to stop it. I can relate to everything this woman has said. Religious/spiritual abuse is a very real thing where you are guilt tripped into forgiving and loving and tolerating abusers. Just be sweet and don't be jealous or selfish and welcome other women into a sexual relationship with your husband. It's worse than adultery and cheating anywhere else where a man usually hides his other relationship. In polygamy, especially when there is abuse, you are forced to watch their flaunted relationship, forced to have them in your home, forced to watch your children taken, and forced to LIKE it. If you don't like it or go along with it -- you pay.

I arrived at university and discovered both IVCF and your father's early work at the same time with tons of effort in apologetics especially including Francis Schaeffer. I continued to grad school where I met my wife "CINO" (Christian in name only") and led her to Christ for real. 35 years later she died at home when I was in the next room and I've been drifting spiritually and know I need to find a new congregation (as my old one had disintegrated in the split over the Copeland / Hagen heresy) but am still dealing with "Oh Lord, where was your protection when milady needed you most?" I really appreciate Sean's work as it continues his father's work which I so valued in univesity but at this point desperately need a re-grounding. It's probably obvious that my closing line is "pray for me"

Prayers for you. My heart breaks as I read your story. I pray that you will do what you know you should. God owes us no answers, but as you open your heart and become closer to Him, He may share with you a glimpse of His master plan. You could gain insight on His purpose for your wife's death or His purpose for your life beyond leading her HOME where she patiently waits for you to finish your journey. Finish well, sir, and God's Best to you!

We call everything you described as religious cult and spiritual abuse, however I would like to say that the same characteristics apply to so many atheistic families where they push their belief that God does not exist on every one around them and they abuse their families in such horrendous ways. You can't see this as obvious in the western countries due to the idea of freedom of speech and belief however if you look at the communist countries as an example, I can't see much difference. I grew up in a communist country and the level of abuse towards children especially, is on a different level. We used to be beaten with a rubber hose from the washing machine. The same as you, I had no idea when it was coming and why. Sexual abuse, drunkenness, cheating and verbal abuse is rampant. Jesus Christ is so beautiful and so merciful and he made himself known to me and to my family and there is no therapy or any help from anyone else that would or could heal but HIM!

Currently struggling . I was involved in a sociological cult for 7 years 3 years ago . It’s a daily struggle and have found it difficult to find a church that doesn’t feel cultish but that’s not “motivational either “ thank you both for this video , the aspect of finding a good church and deconstructing is the hardest part of this process and found your words comforting

Naomi, you are brave, beautiful and genuine. What a tremendous testimony. As the founder of a prayer ministry focused on ministering to the lost and deceived in both mainstream and fundamental LDS, I have seen firsthand how damaging polygamy is for everyone involved. Thank you for sharing your journey and offering hope to others in similar situations to yours. God bless you and your ministry! ❣

I had a wonderful pastor growing up. I recall a sermon he taught when I was a child where he said "I am just a man. I can make mistakes. It's your responsibility to go home and validate anything I say today and with your bilbe." I have always remembered those words and I always validate what preachers/teaches/ speakers of any kind say with the Bible. Lots of scary self serving flakes out there folks. Check the word.

Your healing and faith sing through and underneath your words, Naomi. I wish you didn't have to be born into the family you were or to endure what you did. Thank you for your openness and the work you did to get to where you are today. Your words about knowing there was "something more" even from a young age, without knowing how or why other than that the world was beautiful, stopped me in my tracks. Thank you for giving voice to that. God made himself known to me like that too. I've never been able to explain it.

The honesty in this testimony is such a blessing and informative and engaging. I grew up as a worldly Catholic. Different but similar. I had a very strict father who took away joy and the excitement of learning and really didn’t want to be bothered with a real relationship with us. I felt as a girl I was unimportant and never listened to. It was physical abuse at times but it all broke my heart and hurt me deeply.

Great information! I've noticed a more heightened discernment of spousal abusive since I've had a few friends in that situation. Interestingly, these high control types put on a very polished front and so many outsiders don't see or believe the abused spouse/congregant.

I am a wayward Catholic here. I have been witness to several sexual abuse scandals of children. I myself was never abused, but being from a small town, what impacted one person, impacted us all. It left wounds on/in me. When I was an adult, I got back into church again, and joined the choir, and got my babies baptized, ans all The things… then it happened all over again with the priest and the choir director. I really appreciate this interview. I too have continued to develop a relationship with god, but I don’t think I will ever be able to join a church again. 😞
