I'm not sure if I mentioned that the particle ЖЕ never changes the sentence, any sentence can be used without this particle. It mostly plays a role of a booster that emphasises certain things

Отлично!!!! This is the first video I've seen where I really understand 'же' a lot better. These question words with "же" remind me of how we use the word "even" in English. Even=Даже but we also use this word "even" to add emotion, or emphasis. Here's a list: Где же? - Where was that even at? Как же? - How did you even do that? Когда же? - When did that even happen? С кем же? - Who could you even go with? Почему же? - Why did you even touch that? (I say that to my kids a lot...haha). Я же говорил тебя, что если ты бы делал это, это прозойдёт. - I even told you that if you did that, then this would happen. (I've said to my kids a few times also...haha). I don't think my grammar was very good in the last sentence, but I'm sure that you understand.

Yeah, Craig!!!! Your "Even" sentences are just brilliant! That's exactly the emotion "Же" carries in those cases! Your sentence has some mistakes, but the construction is complicated, so I'll correct: Я же говорил тебЕ, что если бы ты сделал это (if you've done, if you've accomplished something), то (than) это бы НЕ произошло (this wouldn't have happened) Haha my construction turned out even more complicated, maybe you didn't mean that)))) ahahahaha We just say: я же говорила!!!!! Without elaboration because the outcome is right here before our eyes)))) like: the egg is broken - я же говорила! Which would mean, before you took that egg I said: не трогай, оно может разбиться!!!

Спасибо))) We also just say: I even told you!!!! I just wrote a complete sentence to show context since the outcome was not before the eyes of the reader)))

How exactly do the first five Russian sentences translate into their English counterparts?
@americanstudyingrussian9062
@americanstudyingrussian9062 6 жыл бұрын
Udar Pavarota, Я же говорил! - I even told you! Москва такая красивая. Это же столица! - Moscow is so beautiful. It's even the capital! Говори же! - Say it even! Маша же девочка! - (I can't translate this one in a way that sounds right). In these 2 sentences where же is used as a contrast, it cannot be translated with the word 'even'. In these 'contrast' sentences, I think the word 'indeed' can be used. But I'm not sure if that will always work. Я люблю чай, он же любит кофе. - I love tea, but he indeed loves coffee. Он не понимает по-русски. Правильно, он же Француз. - He doesn't understand Russian. He is indeed French.

Thank you for this. It was very helpful, A lot of other languages have this ЖЕ, just like Russian, which has no meaning by itself. For non English speaking learners, or students who are fluent in another language besides English, I recommend to use that language to find the equivalent of ЖЕ. Then you can understand it much better and apply it correctly in your Russian in all situations. For example in Farsi the equivalent of ЖЕ is KHOB, or KHOB DIGE.

Hi guys! And welcome to “Live Russian” vocabulary. Today we will talk about the particle ЖЕ[zhe]. This video was requested by one of my subscribers. And we will get right to it. Because I bet that a lot of you guys were thinking “ what is this particle “ЖЕ[zhe]” mean? Does it have any role in the sentence? Why it appears here and there all the time? Today I will try and give you two recommendations how to use this particle, in order to sound more natural, if you want to insert it in your speech. Because foreigners learners of Russian language, tend to put it in the wrong places within sentences. 1. ЖЕ[zhe] AFTER A QUESTION WORD You may take any question word and add the particle ЖЕ[zhe] to it. What role will it play here? It will just make your question sound more emotional, and stronger. It will show your interest, and it will put emphasis on the meaning of what you want to say or wish to convey. 1.1 Which one?/what kind of? Какую же? Kakuyu zhe? For example: -I bought a new car. Я купила новую машину. YA kupila novuyu mashinu. -Which one/What kind of a car? Какую же Kakuyu zhe.  ★ You are interested in knowing what kind of car I bought, because you did not expect me to buy a car. You could just ask: Какую?[Kakuyu?]=Which one? But it would not sound as strong or emphasized. 1.2 Where exactly? Где же? Gdye zhe? For example: -Today I was in another town. Сегодня я была в другом городе. Seevodnya YA byla v drugam gorade. -Where exactly? Где же ? Gdye zhe? -In Moscow. В Москве. V Maskve. ★ You are interested to know where I was, because you didn’t expect me to go visit another city, especially Moscow, the capital of Russia. Wow !! 1.3 How?/How is it?/How come? Как же? Kak zhe? -I have finally done it/accomplished it! Я наконец-то сделала это! YA nakanyets-ta sdelala eta! -How did you manage? Как же? Kak zhe?  Because you thought that I will never manage to do it. And then you answer: -Very easy/Really easy! Очень просто! Ochen' prosta!
@user-bp6dq9yw2f
@user-bp6dq9yw2f 3 жыл бұрын
Another example: Moscow is so beautiful! Москва такая красивая . Maskva takaya krasivaya. -It’s obvious, it is the capital after all. Это же столица. Eta zhe stalitsa. You could say: It’s the capital. Это столица. Eta stalitsa. But then it wouldn’t have this emotion that it is an obvious fact. 2.3 PERSUADING SOMEONE BY USING VERB+ Же [zhe] -So say it!/Go ahead, speak! Говори же! Gavari zhe! ★ When we want to force someone to do something, we can add Же[zhe] after the verb. Говори + же! Here we don’t have a subject. Therefore Же[zhe] is placed after the verb. -Finally do it! Наконец делай же! Nakanyets delay zhe! Наконец [nakanyets]= finally. -Do it finally[ get it done once and for all] Perfective verb is used here.[one time action] Сделай же это наконец! Sdelay zhe eta nakanyets! ★ We can add after “же[zhe]” наконец”[nakanyets] which means “finally”. 3. POPULAR PHRASES 3.1 Wow! Надо же ! Nada zhe! For example: -I found a new job! Я нашла новую работу! YA nashla novuyu rabotu! -Wow! You did it! [I am proud of you!} Надо же ! Nada zhe! 3.2 No way!/ I don’t believe you! Как же! Kak zhe! For example: -In a month I am flying to Mars[planet Mars] Через месяц я лечу на Марс . Cherez mesyats YA lechu na Mars. -No way!/ I don’t believe you! Как же! Kak zhe! -Can you imagine, I won one million dollars in the lottery! Представляешь, я выиграл миллион долларов в лотерею! Predstavlayesh', YA vygral million dollarav v loteriyu! -No way!/ I don’t believe you! Как же! Kak zhe!

1.7 Why not? Почему же? Pacheemu zhe? For example: -I don’t want to go to the beach. Я не хочу идти на пляж. YA ni khachu idti na plash. -Why not? Почему же? Pacheemu zhe?  You are surprised. So you add some emotion to your question. “After all, it is sunny and nice, so why don’t you want to go?” You may answer: -Because I am tired.[fem. Adjective] Потому что я устала. Patamu shto YA ustala. Устала[ustala]= tired[adjective. Fem] Устал [ustal]= tired[adj. masc] -Because I am filming a video for you guys. Потому что я снимаю для вас видео, ребята. Patamu chto ya snimayu dlya vas video, rebyata. 2. Же [zhe] AFTER THE SUBJECT It is very important, because as I mentioned before a lot of foreigners who learn Russian tend to put the particle: Же [zhe] in the wrong/bizarre place or everywhere in the sentence. 2.1 Talking about contrasts The first usage after the subject is when you are talking about contrasts. -I love tea, but he loves coffee. Я люблю чай, он же любит кофе. YA lublu chay, on zhe lubit kofe.  In this case we use “же”[zhe] instead of {a= but}. It is possible in contrast. We could say: -I love tea, but he loves coffee. Я люблю чай, а он любит кофе. YA lublu chay, a on lubit kofe. OR: -I love tea, but he practically hates it. Я люблю чай, он же просто его ненавидит. YA lublu chay, on zhe prosta yevo ninavidit.

2.2 CONFIRMATION OF AN OBVIOUS FACT Же [zhe], in this case, adds emotional aspect to what we say. It is like saying: “Of course”!! For example: ★ One person says: -He doesn’t understand Russian. Он не понимает по-русски. On ni panimayet pa-ruski. ★ Another person says: -Of course, he is French. Правильно, он же француз. Pravil'na, on zhe frantsus.  What do you expect? He is not Russian; therefore why would he understand it? Another similar example: -Masha is obviously a girl! Маша же девочка! Masha zhe devochka! ★ Let’s say, that the boys are playing “boys games”, such as war games, but Masha doesn’t want to play with them. -Masha doesn’t want to play with them war games. Маша не хочет с нами играть в войну. Masha ni khochet s nami igrat' v vaynu. -Of course, Masha is a girl.[not a boy] Конечно, Маша же девочка. Kanyeshna, Masha zhe devochka. ★ Маша [Masha] the girl= the subject. Then we put “Же “[zhe] If we say: “Маша девочка же” it would be really strange and would sound unusual as well as being devoid of emotion and emphasis. ★ Let’s look at this popular sentence: -I told you so! Я же говорила! YA zhe gavarila! For example, you fall from the bike, and I am saying: “I told you that it was going to happen, because you can’t ride it !!” -I fell of my bicycle. Я упал с велосипеда. YA upal s velasipeda. -I told you so!/Of course I told you! Я же говорила! YA zhe gavarila!

1.4 When exactly? Когда же? Kagda zhe? For example: -Soon I will go to Russia. Скоро я поеду в россию. Skora YA payedu v rassiyu. -When exactly? Когда же? Kagda zhe?  You add some emotion by using the particle Же [zhe], maybe because you want to emphasize that you wanted and planed to do something with me here, and now you found out that I am leaving soon. If you said just: Когда [kagda]=when, it would be less strong emotionally. 1.5 What exactly is? Кем же? Kyem zhe? For example: -My sister works in the police. Моя сестра работает в полиции. Maya sistra rabotayet f palitsii. -What is her profession/occupation? Кем же? Kyem zhe?  You are surprised because you don’t believe that police is an appropriate place for women to work in. However not now days, since there are women working in the police force now days. 1.6 With whom exactly? С кем же? S kyem zhe? For example : -Today I am going to the cinema. Сегодня я иду в кино. Seevodnya YA idu f kino. -With whom exactly? С кем же ? S kyem zhe?  You are surprised because you know that my husband works, so how can I go to the cinema, and with whom exactly? By myself??

Most days I practice with a set of "whole sentence" flash cards and here's one that I thought about in a new way since your video: Я хочу, чтобы ты сейчас же вернулся домой. The же really adds emphasis that you should be at home, *right now!* Right?

Exactly! Wow, you're starting to feel the language, Mark! I didn't give other places of ЖЕ in my video to not make beginners lost, but you manage to use the information about emphasis in your exploration! Bravo!! Молодец! Другие примеры: Ты должен сегодня же это сделать! Я завтра же тебе напишу! Сейчас же перестань! Or Перестань сейчас же!

ТЕБЕ is normally used when a person is a recipient of something: Я ДАЮ ТЕБЕ / I give you, Я ГОВОРЮ ТЕБЕ / I'm saying to you (you're a recipient of my words). ТЕБЯ is used when a person is our direct object: Я ВИЖУ ТЕБЯ / I see you, Я ЛЮБЛЮ ТЕБЯ / I love you (you're the object of my love)
