Expletive constructions are phrases or sentences that begin with “There are,” “There is,” “It is,” “It was, ""Here comes," etc. The verb “to be” is also part of many of these uninspired sentences. In this lesson, Mr. P. will give an easy explanation of how to build an expletive sentence. He will further delve into how to use there, it, and here in a sentence. This lesson is designed for intermediate students who wish to improve their English and those above levels who wish to clarify doubts about this topic.
Watch, Listen & Speak English!
Mr. P. is a Canadian English Teacher/Coach from Toronto, in Canada.
He has been an English Teacher since 1997, teaching adults and adolescents in Toronto and Rome.
He graduated from Queens University and was an Honorary Fellow in the English Language at UNITELMA La Sapienza University in Rome. In the past, he was also a Language Monitor at the University of Toronto. He has also taught English to many important politicians and celebrities in Italy. He is a certified English Teacher specializing in TEFL, TESL, TESOL (Arizona State University) & TOEFL.

Excellent explanation, but I have a question, what happen If in an sentence beginning with here or there? We need to invert the subject and verb o auxiliary if the subject is a noun? I'm confused about that, thanks!

You never discussed expletive there sentences with a compound subject, such as "There is/are my mom and dad." Many people, including me, argue the verb should be "is" to agree with the first noun of the compound subject. Saying there are my mom ... just sounds wrong regardless of of what comes next.
