You are very wise my friend . I took many years studying the academic background on these arts before starting the practice. Many gods go through changes over the centuries and knowing the beginnings of them is important. Like pazuzu the demon that attacked Linda blair's character in the exorcist. Highly unlikely pazuzu would attack little girls as it was pazuzu who protected children before hollywood got their hands on this entity. And also what started as people saying a few words to their daemons before leaving the house that changed to people praying to demons before leaving the house. Here people started to see this go from an internal to what was thought of as an external power . The understanding of how systems changed over history tells us much about the bare bones of the system at its core.

In Sydney we refer to Ibises as 'bin chickens', because they have a reputation as urban scavengers. Sadly this is because of the destruction of their natural habitat, but I am very fond of them nonetheless - not least because of their association with Thoth/Hermes. As an underpaid academic, they remind me that one can be both a scholar AND a bin chicken. Another fascinating video. Thank you Dr. Sledge.

Great summary! I would add a few observations based on my recent reading of this book. A huge part of the difficulty of the text is that it is fragmentary even by ancient manuscript standards (I sang "lacuna, lacuna" to the tune of "Corinna, Corinna" at certain points). There are numerous instances of reference to the opening of the mouth ritual, or the underlying method of "Telesmatics." (Not sure if I coined that) aside from describing the initiation of the scribe. It is also clear that the hieroglyphs themselves were viewed as spiritually alive, and that much of the education of the scribe required learning to listen to the voice of each of them. Lastly, I doubt we will get much further into the connections to the Hermetica without discovering more of the related texts. 42 sounds about right. I hope they do turn up, and that someone has the nerve to publish _The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Books of Thoth_.

I absolutely love your channel. Something that occurred to me while watching this was how interesting it would be to get your perspective on how a scholar in each of several periods would have viewed the pedigree of their literature. For example, would an early Hermetic scholar believe they could trace their wisdom to a literal Thoth? Did Medieval readers of the Zohar think of this wisdom as having come spontaneously from Rashbi, or perhaps as belonging to an older oral tradition? And did the movement of literary Humanism view themselves as unearthing ancient truths that would recycle some sort of golden age, or did they view their work more as literary archeology? I suppose you could call this a metaretrospective or something.
@attackofthewindmills
@attackofthewindmills Жыл бұрын
So very well done. You are able to understand perspectives of the human being through time as their consciousness of themselves were bound to their time period. It's more scientific than interpretation because essentially it's about unbiased observation. The way we are taught is that one can step into the past and become like them and rewrite things so that it conforms to truth. In other words, can we really write down things today and claim they will be truths 100 of years later? We cannot and if we understand we are attempting to look at it the same way in these hermetic text.

I was introduced to Hermeticism by a dear friend of mine who recently passed away. Although I have some knowledge of the Latin and Greek Classics, before meeting my friend, I wasn't entirely sure what the term "Hermetic" meant. (That's true, but also, I think, a good joke about the academic separation of a few ancient texts deemed "Classic" from all the rest.) I first came across your channel yesterday, and I've watched several of your videos on Hermeticism since then. Right at the very beginning of the first video I saw the volumes by Lynn Thorndike on the shelf behind you, which to me was a very hopeful sign of quality, and you haven't disappointed in the slightest. Then toward the end of that video I was thinking, Well, this guy's the bomb, but I still need some help sorting out the editions of the primary sources -- BUT YOU RECOMMEND EDITIONS OF THE PRIMARY SOURCES!!! On KZbin no less! So I'll be working my way through some of the primary texts, in order of their linguistic difficulty for me: Latin first, because it's the easiest for me, then Greek, then... well, I guess, for me personally it's a tie for 3rd place between Armenian and Coptic and Hebrew and Arabic and Aramaic, and did I forget any? But yeah, I'll definitely let you know how that goes! I'm stoked! Amazon has shipped Festugière's edition of Asclepius!

I love your channel…..but I just wanted to add; after minute 7:00 you suggest that we should take the meaning of the ‘animal languages’ as symbolic. (If I understand you correctly.) I would argue that we cannot assume this, as seeing the world as symbolic is a fairly new idea. They likely were speaking of a ‘language’ they heard in their meditations and mystical states of awareness, as they saw everything as living. I think that when we suggest that their practices are ‘symbolic’, that we are adding our modern psychological based conceptual ideation to the thinking life of ancient peoples. It seems to great of an assumption to make, at least in my estimation.
@TheBookofBeasts
@TheBookofBeasts 3 жыл бұрын
@TP Not sure how to explain this briefly….those who practice going into mystical states of consciousness often speak of encountering ‘the group-soul consciousness’ of varying animal species. When spiritual practices are speaking of this, they aren’t talking about symbolism. The animals aren’t representing just qualities for them, they perceive themselves to be actually learning from the animal group-souls through meditation. If one believes that is possible or not, is a whole other subject. If the Egyptians stated that they learned hieroglyphs from the animals, as he said in the video, I would not assume that they meant that symbolically; but instead that they are telling us, that for them, they were having esoteric experiences with the group-souls of the animals, and that the animals are who they believe transmitted the hieroglyphic language to them. In our modern thinking we jump to the idea that things were symbolic very fast, and we do this even when people are expressing that something isn’t symbolic for them. We just have to be careful assuming that anyone saw their own practice as symbolic, as opposed to perceiving it as actual dialogue with other beings, which is often the case.

@timothystamm3200
@timothystamm3200 14 күн бұрын
Well, the Greeco-Roman-Egyptian syncretismm held that Hermes and Thoth were one and the same. So perhaps Hermes the Thrice Great is referring to a God of Wisdom, specifically perhaps Thoth, rather than a person. In fact, they also believed the gods ruled Egypt as Pharoahs before the Old Kingdom, so it's possible any description of him speaking to people and just wandering about is referring to that belief in his rule at some time in the past.

The mystic books including the "original" bible were written in a manner to exclude the unworthy. This would include symbolism and allegory, for example the temple of darkness is the meditative state, the Baboon basks in the light of the sunrise, the Ibis inhabits the water (heaven) and the earth. The process is the evolution of the consciousness or enlightenment or the coming forth whilst incorporeal from the slumber, the academic mind would struggle to decipher this context.
@ungodly-podcast42

The association of the ibis with Thoth actually has more to do with papyri, as they would scour the marshes for food, themselves being rather obvious sights, and those who followed the ibis would find both food and more material for writing. Reducing water to an analogy for "heaven" loses much of the vital nuance.

It cannot be understood but through experience. The road to infinity is the road of stillness. It is the road of non-attachment, bondage. That being said, it cannot be spoken of with a result of understanding. The words are only pointers. One must walk the road themselves. Egyptian literature of basically any kind is a deepdive. You can't just read a bit and walk away with any kind of understanding of their culture or theology. This is the whole problem with any western esoteric material written of the topic from 18xx-1990ish. They were really more of an Eastern non-dual non-discursive bunch that had a real taste for compounding metaphors. IMHO, once you've spent enough *years* reading proper translations (or learning hieroglyph, ideally), it kind of rewires your brain so that the stuff that at 1st seemed positively and completely obscure kind of forms an associative watercolor word-painting that, while not easy to understand, is sure pretty to look at and contemplate. Their employment of puns and metaphor is like acquiring a taste for challenging liquors. At 1st you want to spit it out but give it time and you savor every drop. It's true that we don't understand much of it in a discursive sense, however I personally maintain that the poetry and spirit of the texts, once you acquire the taste, is worth the leap from the diving board.

Yeah, I don't think this is true. I read some Egyptian and teach Egyptian literature which, for the most part, is rather clear even in translation. This text is just especially difficult given it's technical language, ancient audience and fragmentary nature. You can pick up the three volume Lichtheim and it reads as clearly as anything else in ancient literature. The Egyptians were anything but "non-dual non-discursive" - they had a strong conception of sin and provided hundreds of spells and incantations for providing a positive afterlife. What Egyptian literature are you talking about here?

The “House of Life” aka “Chamber of Darkness” sounds to me VERY much like an allegorical way of referring to the material world. Through the lens of many different esoteric traditions this would make sense; thinking Platonically/neo-Platonically/Gnostically, our realm, our “chamber” or “house,” is the most distant from the The One/The All. It is the transient, imperfect world of concrete manifestation, descended though multiple degrees of emanation. Whether this is interpreted as a bad thing, as in Gnosticism (where it’s seen as a prison) or a good, natural aspect of the nature of God, as in Hermeticism or Neo-Platonism, it is still qualitatively (or at least quantitatively) different from the realm of boundless absolute light/energy of The One/The All which light esotericist typically desire to be more like. In Kabbalah it’s even more explicit. Spacetime, the “womb of creation” is literally a vacuum/void/“Vessel” contracted to create a background as a “canvas,” which appears as the blackness of empty space, upon which the whole of creation can be created from the divine substance of Ein Sof Ohr (Ain Sof Aur), the Light of the Boundless/Limitless/Infinite. So the physical plane of causality & time & physical process is literally a bubble-like vacuum of darkness within an infinite sea of “Light” or energy . And why does it exist? Well, so that there can be conscious experience of growth & change & connectedness & narrative- so the cosmos (or God) can experience itself through interaction with an “other” &, in the Kabbalistic view, fill its creation with delight & fulfillment. A “House of Life,” which is also a “Chamber of Darkness,” in contrast to the pure infinite energy & boundlessness of a transcendent power such as would be very well symbolized by a Solar &/or divine ruler deity like Ra or Osiris. I’ve heard strong arguments from Egyptologists that, counter to the claims of some esotericists & the theories of some archaeologists, Egyptian religion (at least the vast, vast majority of tendencies within it) actually did not conceive of the gods as aspects of one transcendent panentheistic being the way we do in Hermeticism & the like- that actually they were pure polytheists who may have chosen to elevate their preferred/patron deity above the others in their own practice, but who conceived of the gods as distinct, disconnected conscious entities. So perhaps I’m super-imposing my own syncretic panentheistic, nondualistic worldview onto my analysis here… But it really reads that way to me. Who knows; perhaps in the highest levels of initiation in as esoteric of a tradition as the cult of Thoth, a god of magick, wisdom/knowledge, & writing (naturally attractive to some heterodox, mystically-inclined thinkers) there was consideration of this alternate framing of the metaphysical nature of the cosmos & the pantheon. Certainly the intellectual curiosity & rigor of many philosophers of the era is not to be underestimated, & similar ideas date back to like 5,000 years ago with the rise of Advaita Vedanta/Brahmanism in India… So there’s no reason some Egyptians couldn’t have been exposed to or come up with these concepts independently, regardless of the prevailing religious dogma of their society.

Let me simplify this for you. The temple has four sides, thought memory feeling and emotion. They are both positive and negative and they work consciously but more importantly subconsciously. This is about Prayer or Meditation as a calm training place to understand how good and evil work within yourself. Buddha figured it out, so did so many others including Odin, Enoch Jesus etc. The lion of judah within the Star of David, is symbolism. The lion is you, the star is the temple consciously and subconsciously. Knowing how to tame your emotions. Knowing how to do this will help you keep God Commandments. This short story is at the bottom of all the Great History. The sad part is this knowledge can be used for great evil as well, when people use it to manipulate and control others for their own power.

I totally agree. Although how can we really agree. But the initial teaching is brought upon us by beings attempting to salvage our legacy. So that in itself means the lesson is that. they probably knew of the connection between words, language, and thought, and the effects of words that can have multiple meanings and how they can effect the sub-conscience mind, the "2 worlds", hence the word play, this stuff is all collected and stored in the un-conscience mind in abstract manner, it's how subliminal messages and stuff work, and symbolism etc..., it's really good for "inside" jokes, especially when you hide things inside of other things, you should really look into some words and see this in action sometime, i think crowley also understood this, and is why he talked of seeing all the words within words, backwards, forwards, etc....

@@truefreedom3600 just some deductive reasoning really, they may have believed in the spirit realms and stuff, and made connections via that belief, but the episodes of darkness, sleep, is actually good for thinking and learning also, it's why you have the old saying to "sleep on it", and when you sleep your sub-conscience brain works out information and whatnot, and sometimes you have more ideas and thoughts the next morning, to them it would be as if they were getting information from the gods as they slept, which was their own minds, words within words, reading other messages, hiding messages, this is ancient stuff, used by religious elites, secret societies, and other groups, no different than gangs hiding their secret codes to hide their crimes, same purpose, to exchange information to others easily without anyone else understanding it, also used by spies and criminals, kings and priests, which, of course, were the only group that had education and knew how to read and write in the old days, if you crack open a book of legal definition, you can find many words that have different meanings in a legal sense, which is always a bit odd, almost as if they are trying to scam you on contracts or something, but that would be paranoid

What an absolute pleasure listening to a person with so much knowledge. I love to observe lectures presented by people who exist several (or several dozen..) levels above me in regard to any formal education on a subject. Usually, I have to replay every sentence, or every few sentences, to gain a full (fuller, yet sadly, eternally incomplete, if I'm honest) understanding of the material. I can't even imagine the myriad hours you must have spent just absorbed in these ancient, ethereal and magical worlds through your research, literally discovering the lost secrets of mankind and those of our universe. It's quite evident that one thing which makes your content so attractive to viewers is how passionate you are about the subject. It's always refreshing to see proof that people are capable of creating their livelihood from something they truly enjoy. Thank you Doctor J!!
