The latest development, the Fed clearing Ohtani, only confirms Tisha Thompson’s incompetence. She was “this close to” publishing the bogus story Ippei concocted without directly vetting Ohtani. For the story of this magnitude, her action would have been completely unacceptable. She was only saved by Ohtani’s lawyers and LA Times.

Katsunori Kojima, one of the translators of a Japanese MLB player revealed what his job as a translator entailed: He had to help open the bank accounts of the Japanese players in the USA and make all of their tax payments (meaning Ippei most likely had access to Ohtani’s accounts). Kojima was also in charge of bringing their wives and children to the doctor when they became sick, showing that the job as a translator was much more than just on the field. Some players also asked him to go to a dinner alone with their sponsors when they’re tired giving him a bank card to pay. With all of this it is likely that Ippei had access to multiple of Shohei’s accounts and Shohei trusted him with it because it was in his job description. Take this with a grain of salt, but it gives a good example of how Ippei had access to Shohei’s money.

And do any of them speak Japanese, or did EVERYTHING go through Ippei? Unless there are Japanese speakers available to all his reps, it seems, for better or worse, everyone really trusted Ippei.

The logic that 'how can Ohtani not know 4.5 million is missing therefore he's guilty' makes sense to most people who are not making Ohtani's money. Ohtani made $30 million last year with the Angels and around $60 million in endorsements. Almost all people with that kind of money have multiple bank accounts. Banks are insured up to $250,000. If you have $90 million in the bank and you only bank with 1 bank, that means only $250K of your $90 million is insured. Money managers will tell you to open multiple accounts whether in savings, checking, certificate of deposit, or with joint owners to have as much as possible insured. Another way is to start a business or non profit organization to protect their money (most would choose non profit for more favorable tax). It's not surprising at all that Ohtani would have multiple accounts and Ohtani would allow Ippei to have access to manage the account. Ippei was his gatekeeper as well as personal assistant. Ohtani still have to pay his bills, taxes, and various other expenses that normal people have. I don't think any baseball player wants to be worrying about their bills especially if you're a busy two-way player with so many on and off field obligations. It wasn't a lump sum of $4.5 million that was missing but smaller increments adding up to that amount over a couple of years. Also, don't forget that Ohtani probably also has bills to pay in Japan. Ippei and Ohtani had been friends for years and it's not surprising at all if Ippei has access to one or more of his accounts. His banking is much different than people with less than $250k in the bank account.
@jdeljones
@jdeljones Ай бұрын
You Ohtani stans need to stop with the mental gymnastics. Shannon Sharpe on ESPN said on air that he can't even wire 50k to someone without someone at his bank calling for confirmation. Rich people are very rich, Giannis Antetokounmp has 40+ bank accounts. But what does FDIC limits have to do with this when these payments were for more than $250k anyway? It doesn't add up. How long have you been an Ohtani fan? Bc back in Japan he was living on a $1000/mo allowance from his parents and saving all his earnings. He didn't even buy his own house and was living in the dorms of his baseball club. So for someone to now be so hands-off with their money doesn't really square with his past behaviors.

If you claim to take pride in being a journalist, then it's imperative to delve deeper into major investigations regarding bookies. This would be significant news, shedding light on the issue of gambling crimes. I have doubts about your credibility because your initial news piece was published without Shohei’s input. Did your sources for the news come from individuals involved in the investigation? You solely interviewed Ippei without presenting any evidence. How did you verify the accuracy of the information? Dumb comment by loyal Japanese fan. If you listened, she has been investigating the story for MONTHS. Much of what Ippei said matched her interviews with the bookie and the IRS people. Ippei was the voice for Ohtani - so you asked why she didn't talk to Ohtani. Ippei was the voice for Ohtani.HAHAHAHA Ohtani NEVER does interviews. He not only has a language barrier, but also has a cultural barrier. I lived in Japan for five years and was criticized for not adapting to all of your subtle office cultural nuances. ALSO, if an American ball player's bank account was linked to transfers to an illegal Yakuza drug dealer - the Japan police would put the American in jail for three weeks without a hearing. Personally, I think if Ohtani isn't willing to be more transparent, then his fans should stop complaining about how he is being treated unfairly. And if Ohtani doesn't like it, he can take his often injured arm back to Hokkaido.

So who was the PR person listening into the first interview? Assume that person arranged the initial interview, key question should be, was Ohtani aware of that arrangement? Based on his statement, he wasn't aware of this until that team meeting after first game in Korea. This should straight out so we know why two versions came out. Was Ippei blocking communication within Ohtani's camp or Ippei is being used as a fall guy? I suspect PR person or whoever was involved with that first interview did not vet with Ohtani and legal team as no way you can flip the story like that in one day as this kindof matter will be vetted multiple times before go public. If they can't get any info from PR side, at least should poke into the Dodgers as no way they can arrangement an interview like this without consulting the team. Someone from Dodgers should be able to clarify whether Ohtani was informed of this initial interview or not. People keep talking about wiring transfer but even this reporter did say, wealthy people do differently so wire transfer aspect does require the formal investigation to see whether Ohtani did it or Ippei had an access to the account.

I think Shohei must be very lost in translation on the whole thing... Ippei being all fresh and cool at the game with Ohtani at the side, after giving that interview is psycho, sociopath behaviour (not good note on ippeis's charachter). According to the facts given, after the game he came out to the team and then alone to Shohei, where (in my opinion) found out he had been paying ippei's gambling debts wether by being theft or scammed into the situation. In my opinion again, I think he tried to make it pass as Ohtani helping him rather than he, apart of the illegal gambling also be convicted by theft and fraud (a way bigger problem for him than just gambling). we have Ohtani public accusation of Ippei and a very important thing imo, No one on Ippei's side coming to the media, either Japanese or in the US, to defend his character or say Ohtani is lying.

Dumbest comment yet. How was she supposed to interview Ohtani who is NEVER available to the media? She relied on HIS hand-picked translator before the scandal. And as she mentioned several times, Ohtani's representatives now won't answer any of her questions. In fact, now Ohtani is not talking to ANYONE. I like Ohtani, but he and his representatives would help themselves if they could explain exactly HOW Ippei stole the money. And why won't they tell us which "authorities" were informed of the 'theft.' By not pressing charges, it seems that maybe Ohtani authorized these payments and that the money was not "stolen." The more Ohtani hides the more suspicious it looks.

I get that Tisha Thompson tries to cash in her 15 minutes of fame by going around these talk shows. But, and this is a big BUT, at the end, she didn't come up with any scoop. Instead, she was saved by Ohtani's lawyers and LA Times from not becoming another John Morosi reporting Ohtani flying to Toronto. Whether Ippei lied to her or he sabotaged the communication between the crisis manager and Ohtani (both are likely true, btw) is actually secondary. The important thing here is that Thompson was about to publish a story involving Ohtani without directly reaching Ohtani. For the story with this magnitude, her behavior violates Journalism 101 to me. The least thing she could do is to admit she has been duped and then stop giving any legitimacy to her "scoop".

Sure, there are still some questions needing to be answered. But I feel respect and trust in Ohtani, while I have none for Ippei at this point. If Ohtani has not bet on baseball or placed bets of any kind illegally, then the story is not any wrongdoing on his part. Instead, the focus should be on Ippei and his wrongdoing, legally or not. We know his bio contains massive falsehoods in it. I believe Ohtani was betrayed by a guy he trusted, given authority beyond what he should have had, and left Ohtani with a tainted reputation. When was the first payment made to a bookie from Ohtani’s account? If this has been going on for months or years there is absolutely no way Ohtani did not know about this.. When did the transfer that got them in trouble happen? The more evidence that comes out I have a very hard time believing that Ohtani did not know about this. Ohtani would have been made aware of Ippei’s gambling almost as soon as it started most likely.. There is a very small chance that Ohtani just found out this was happening.. Ippei is an interpreter not a member of Ohtani’s financial team.. Ippei would not have access to Ohtani’s bank accounts.. Ohtani would have to be the one to send the money transfers from his own account… There’s no way Ohtani would not have noticed money being stolen from his account, especially if it’s millions of dollars.. And, one or both avoided the conflict of “betting on baseball,” even though they knew ERA and batting averages and injury reports and every team and player statistic. Instead, they chose to bet on LaCrosse and Cricket matches (and, lost money Big Time) BTW, if someone held a gun to our head and gave me 15 minutes to figure out how to lose $4.5 million, could we do it?

Kudos to Tisha for not getting pulled into what Rich was trying to speculate. That’s not her job. She’s confirming the story as she and her team wrote it. There’s no way she would have been about to publish if she didn’t KNOW that Ohtani sent that money. The focus was never if he gambled. It’s that he’s sending money to a bookie that’s getting busted by the feds.

Whats the big deal! OHTANI has never had any rumors of gambling issues. His mom took care of his finances. If your worth a billion dollars $4.5 million is like us giving $100 to a friend. Ippei and ohtani knows betting in baseball is ILLEGAL! Might not be worth it to sue Ippei. Ippei did ROB the trust of ohtani friendship through his gambling issues.

I want to point out that the absolute lack of both this program, which I generally love, and American media, in general, of discussing issues WITH multi-lingual and multicultural journalists, area specialists, etc., is a profound weakness rooted in either benign, but ignorant, disinterest, or a pure cultural-superiority complex. As an American emigrant, this has been sad to watch. If you're determined to tread this same path, invite David Fletcher to call in to the program to talk about inviting Mizuhara to the card game with Bowyer. Was Ohtani, that gambling degenerate, just not interested that day? Secondly, the English spelling of 大谷' s name in romaji as a gotcha is moronic. If you spoke to anyone who understands the Japanese language, you'd understand in under 10 seconds. Overall, really disappointing coverage, Rich.

They mean his "last" or "family" name, which is usually spelled as "Otani" when translated into English. Some Japanese names can be spelled in more than one way in English. For example, "Inoue" can also be rendered as "Inouye."

The biggest difference is that there was no betting on baseball involved... Especially on a game you're involved in. That is what the black Sox and Pete Rose did, not Ippea.

Because he owed the bookie money, did Ippei provide information to the bookie about injuries or anything else he knew about baseball or games being played? Did he place bets on behalf of any MLB players? What steps does the bank have to make a wire transfer of $500K to verify it is not fraudulent? Did they tip off the feds? Ask any gambling addict what they are going to bet on, and it will be on the sport they know best. It's why Rose bet on baseball.
