I love the intro where you mention different aesthetics that fit the quadrant. It'd be really interesting if you do a video where you sort popular aesthetics into the quadrants. Meanwhile, what quadrant do you think dark academia is in? I can't seem to pinpoint its quadrant, so I'd love to here your take!
@StyleThoughtsbyRita3 жыл бұрын
Omg that's such a good question. I've been thinking about it too. I think its left+up when it's extravagant and as a persona but in the more casual iterations left+down where it's about ease and freedom Ultimately it's meant to be very intriguing, mysterious, magnetic etc. The ultimate college lost girl 😂 I love the idea of placing different aesthetics and have been thinking about a video on that! So thanks for the encouragement

I think I’ve had a revelation. I’m a Right Up woman trying to dress in a Right Down way. All of the styles I’ve been interested in or attempted in the last year or so- Light Academia, soft retro (not quite soft girl), preppy, Parisian, etc.- are very Right Down. At the same time, I know I’ve been trying to cultivate a “soft, approachable” image. After a while, though I enjoy these styles, I find myself rebelling against the softness and craving something powerful and dramatic. I’ve been telling myself, “People don’t care how strong you are. They just want someone relatable and non-threatening.” I’ve often felt like my personality is too intense and that I should tone it down, and tread lightly to avoid causing problems. There is also a bit of “I am a woman, and this is how women should dress.” Funnily enough, based on how people respond to me and comments they’ve made about me, some of that Right Up demeanor must be leaking through even when I wear sweatpants. I guess I can’t hide. And maybe I should stop trying.

Yes! This is the first time I've instantly been able to say "this is me" in a style system. 100% right-down here. I'm something of a Soft Classic in Kibbe, or a Classic/Romantic, and I think it's easy to make that work within this quadrant. I relate especially to when you say it's hard for RDs to be "edgy". No matter how much I've tried over the years to pull off edgier looks, I always look awkward in them. Understated, approachable, radiant - all of those. I don't wear light or pale colours very well, but I agree that it's possible to be RD even when you suit darker colours better.

Rita, I suspect you have many mature/middle-aged women as clients and fans. It would be awesome if you could incorporate some older celebrities into your examples too. I know they are probably not as frequently photographed or stars of street style so it is likely much more difficult. You could certainly do features on what you would suggest or buy for them given their place in the system and their visible/known essence. Loving your videos, your enthusiasm and Meradj is adorable!

I was having such a hard time placing my color season. So i just decided until i could get draped i would just wear colors i enjoy, bright pinks!! And as soon as i allowed myself that, i have been having a huge style revolution and realized i have been trying to hide myself in clothing by wearing black and baggy clothes and i have completely lost myself. I was inspired to watch your videos again and this feels so accurate for me. Most of my wardrobe is made up of outfits that kate middleton would wear but i never wear them because most people around me are not wearing them. I realize now its because this is my style and thats okay!! I still don't know what quadrant I fall into but I'm giving myself permission to just wear what I want from now on

Ever since your system came out I knew I was Down, but couldn't tell if I was Right or Left. I watched the Left/Down videos and felt like "okay, this could be me", but with this video I kept pointing at the screen saying "Yes! That's me!". I'm a Kibbe SC, not sure if there's some correlation there. I understood that there's a spectrum within each quadrant that I didn't get before; I feel more drawn to Sofia Coppola and she's quite near the Left and Up limits, so maybe that's why it wasn't so evident for me.

the "signs" section really feels right to me! I think one of my friends is right + up and she hates feeling like she's dressed up, and she loves showing skin but not feeling sexy, and when she wants to go to a formal event she can spend a lot of time trying to look casual. on the other hand, for me and my more up friends, the goal is to look like we put a lot of effort in even if we actually just threw things! we've had excited discussions about how great a few dresses and a good red lipstick are for appearing more formal in a few minutes when we wake up late and don't have time to do up all our buttons and put on a full face, and the blank looks from the down people in the room finally make sense. of course right + down people can look great and comfortable in a dress and red lipstick, and be very intentional, but the goal isn't putting on this mask or armor or (true-to-self) costume like it is for some of us who are more up

Yes I LOVE my outfits that are effortless to put on but look so fancy/polished/thoughtful. What a game changer. I used to think that looking fancy == tons of effort to get dressed and fussy to wear, it was great to release that concept. As you say, a great dress and lipstick (and in my case shoes and earrings!) are amazing!

I also think the right+down people can sometimes be insecure about their downness and so then you feel like YOU'RE "trying so hard" and "not being chill", because they kind of imply everyone should just be easy breezy It's been helpful for me to realize that it's just their own (very valid 💖) style struggles and that it doesn't mean I have to try and fit in with the super easy styles

Thank you for this! At 66, it actually made me cry with relief: that’s why I’ve never wanted to carry a bag, that’s why I often have had to add something silly to my outfits (radish earrings 🤣), that’s why Ive always gone to my closet and wondered what I wanted to express to the world that day, and that’s why my poor mom and ex-husband got so frustrated with me and tried to make me wear things I’d actually, just like your video says, would claw at and try to remove as the night/day went on!! I'll wait for the left+down video but I think this is my spot! All the keywords you mentioned align really well with my preferred style and I think a combination like Refined+Approachable best describes how I want to come off. One of the outfits I feel most like myself is slim fit jeans, a bright colored sweater and an oversized men's short poking underneath. It's put together but it's also fun and a little unexpected. I'd say I'm something like a third to the right and half way down, but the comparison of The Sweethearts to flowers makes me think I could be more extreme (a close friend once vividly described me as three different flowers!)

@@StyleThoughtsbyRita Dear Rita, my thoughts on the music addition≥........ YOU DON"T NEED IT! 🤗 You are both so well thought out and intuitively expressive that the music just can't add anything else. Watching your other videos on your system I got so carried away listening; I was having so many connective associative thoughts as you both spoke that you took me on a real journey of realising so many insightful things myself while watching and then and so sadly I couldn't get into that place again with this video; I feel the music addition is repetitive and on the same frequency continually so your mind can't dance away and absorb the deeper parts of your system because you keep getting pulled back by the sound. Well I'm a HSP and I have real trouble zoning that kind of sensory stimulations out and truely your wisdom and insights don't need the gimmick that background music can often be. But you are the creative geniuses so you do what you feel. I just wanted to vouch for your more than enoughness.

I suspected I belong to this quadrant, but I was watching the outfits and thinking 'i wouldn't really wear this...' But then you get to the 7 signs and I'm like 'yap, yap, yap....' And then you give the keywords and I'm like 'exactly!'. So I guess I like it a bit more casual than those ladies, but with even more interesting accessories, like I have a necklace that is a sword and I love it because it 'cuts' all that softness in an unexpected way! Also, couldn't help but notice both Dakota and Saoirse are Soft Classics, like me. Maybe this quadrant is our home, but I kinda wish I belonged to the left+down quadrant.

Love seeing Issa Rae and Sofia Coppola here. I resonate with the playfulness - sometimes I reject tons of clothing options because they aren't "funny" enough. I examined why that unusual word kept coming up for me and I think there's a playfulness when designers reference vintage clothing or make some unusual choice in the cut or pattern. I call it "funny" because it makes me laugh with surprise or interest when I see it. Dressing perfectly for an occasion, or dressing to be purely sexy or pretty seems too dull and not a good expression of my personality.

What a great system! Thank you for these videos. I am also thankful I have kept my old selfies and outfit photos from as far as 2013 so when I now look back, I can see the clear Down essence I have. I just cannot pinpoint if I am more to the Left or Right: due to insecurities it seems I might have been more Left for "natural styling", but I do look quite natural essence-wise in the Right leaning styles. And, consequently, I have wished for this R+D looking style for so many years! It's just that I feel that it doesn't fit the life I work in, where styles needed are very dark, conservative & maybe more L+U or somewhere in the middle. And again I come to this same dilemma; what essence is most insecure about doing their own thing, haha? The style things I do are never in align with what I wish for - for some odd reason that I still haven't cracked. Oh to forget all of my culture's scrutiny against feminine styles and I could be free...

I can relate a little bit to the right + down women but my outfits doesn't read right + Down. Do you know why that is? Does it make sense? I place myself on the Left + Up. To me, Alexa Chung is Right + Up. Her whole demeanor and outfits read Effort and a little bit mysterious. Women who are Right + Down gives off the impression that you can dress like them and look as good (of course reality says otherwise hahaha). Women who are Right + Up gives off the impression that thier outfits are not that easy to pull off. Just by looking at her and her outfits, I feel like I would have to work harder just to look as good as her. She also looks good in suits. Even when she's not wearing suits, the clothes she wear gives off suit vibes. Also, to me, whenever she does interviews and converate with people, it seems like she has a bit persona.

These designers use celebrities as a form of advertisement. They are being use as "hangers". The designers do not want viewers to see the celebrity but to see the clothes. The clothes are the main focal point and the celebrity is to be invisible. What do you think? Also what about Coconut Girl Style? I think it's Right - Down. What do you think?

Now my question is - is it me who chooses the quadrant or you? I naturally like understated but in the Kibbe groups, they want me to be SG or TR and I can't relate to all that detail/fuss, I like SC lol. So my aesthetic is understated but my body may look better in something completely different hence my question to you on how to select a quadrant. I don't get that. @StyleThoughtsbyRita3 жыл бұрын
I think its kind of individual, but I think that the right+down intuitive makeup for me is "gentle". If you are like Geraldine and are a SD with a deeper complexion, I think a black smokey gentle eyeliner can be "gentle" but on someone with very soft and pale features like Saiorse I would go for very simple. I think left down often looks good with a bit more expressive makeup that highlights their facial features and structure (whether that's minimal or a bit more "edgy"). Whereas for left and right up I think it's all about completing the look with the makeup!

To be fair I think a lot of the "French minimalism" "London girl" type outfits are very elegant and not too feminine (if you exclude floral ditsy dresses) But in general we all have bodies and all want some sensual enjoyment with the clothes I would ask which right+down keywords work for you and see how to create that. For example, "inspiring and approachable" or "luminous and personable" -- what does it look like when your outfit ISN'T setting that mood?

Would a sharp but minimalist aesthetic fit here, or right up? I'm thinking Carolyn Bessette Kennedy.

Hi Rita Love your work.❤ Someone mentioned in the comments the left down videos they watched. Have you already done them? If so I cant find them. 😥. I'm quite certain that's where I fit and would love to see them. Thank you both for the dedication and thought you've put into your system.

I didn't get the questions right, but I'm dressing right down right now .. what does it mean, do I underdress? 😃🤣 PS you two are just so adorable together, the love you have for each other shines through every move and every word. Love it! 💖💜

Hi, Rita! I'm a Right +Down. Thank you both for this advice! And you're right about the struggle with bags. 🤭 I'm also a romantic in the Kibbe system, and sometimes I feel like there's something missing in my simple outfits. Do you have any recommendations?

So, I am willing to bet the farm that Kibbe would see me as FN but I feel that I am erased by too much size, weight or drama I am a right+ down and while I do like to carry a medium-large bag because I like to carry lots of stuff (books, notebooks, glasses, medications, lip balm and hand cream) it has to be a cross body or back-pack style because I must have free hands and I have to admit that the cross body can quickly look too big on me. I have found that a rounded shape is better than the sharp corners of a rectangle.

I may be wrong about right down....my challenge is that I feel like that right down person inside but they may not be what others are seeing first. I keep getting told I am refined and regal looking so I am working on adding tiaras and sceptres to my wardrobe.

I think I am between Kibbe SD and FN but I am not sure. I am really drawn to 80-90s styles, and love FN looks but I feel like I looke to busty and misshaped in FN. I think maybe if I lost weight it would change how I feel.

Of the women I work with, 50% know their quadrant (even if they are unsure) and 50% are very confused but really get excited when I explain where they fit in. It's hard to see ourselves!

@@StyleThoughtsbyRita The last person in my family to speak Swedish was my great grandmother, so I don't have to listen to you! LOL. Just kidding. I figured it'd be that way. Always is. Although I think I could be this one too after watching. And actually I know guys said it's more important that you're right or left, but for me I think it's up and down. I'm def down.
@aoifecalderon3833 жыл бұрын
@@fifimsp maybe it’s more important for up people to be in the correct right or left category and for down people it’s more important to be down instead of right or left? because when you’re look is extra it’s more obvious when you’re in the wrong side (r or l) and when you’re a casual person it’s more awkward when you’re trying too hard in any category? Just guesses :) they’re still trying to work out / explore their system right?

Alexa Chung is up. I would feel so conspicuous and overdressed in her looks. It only looks effortless because its an up woman dressing casually.
