Blackie, there are LOTS of teachers out there but the good ones are hard to find and a rare treat when we do. YOU, sir, are one of the best. Somehow, you come up with the best stories that vividly demonstrate your points. This particular tale had tears filling up the corners of my eyes as I laughed (I can relate). Yes, Murphy and I are OLD COMPANIONS. I'd kinda like to meet "Tom and Jerry" sometime - I think we'd be instant friends!

Great point about having a good pantry system that can hang in a tree away from camp. I just finished James' course at Way Point. While attending the course I (the uneducated foreign visitor) learned the ways of the wily American racoon. The little thief got into my knapsack and stole my fresh block of cheese and my beef, right out of my shelter while I was sleeping. 1: I didn't have the food in sealed containers that help reduce their odor and protect the food. 2: If we were in an area with bear or mountain lion, the buggers might have settled on me as their meal, drawn into camp because of the odor from the food. 3: Stay in New Zealand because we don't have things like that living out here lol.

I remember taking a customer's boat out for a test run and forgetting the drain plug. I was sure happy I left the trailer in the water because I slid that boat right on the trailer and by the time I got back to she shop it wasn't draining water. The point is you never know when you or someone else will have a brain hiccup so don't take things for granted.

Mr. Blackie, Yep, luv that pantry idea. Compact & watertight... A bit off topic-when I saw your D21 vids, I was WOW! I have a '97 D21 that I am looking at converting to a camper, initially for day trips. Cap is fiberglass. It was my daily driver when I lived in Atlanta, & with my move out of GA, I kept it. ALL the YT vids I've seen are for larger trucks. NO one had setup ideas for a smaller truck! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Thank you, sir!

Blackie, you’re right - ziplock bags do not handle rough handling. However, I place them into a Lock & Lock airtight plastic box, which goes into one of my Alice pack’s front pockets. I use the same idea with fishing tackle when fishing the surf or off rocks in my area of Australia (I use ziplocks and old plastic film tubes - the tubes camera film used to come in) and the contents have never gotten wet in the 30 years I’ve used this idea.

They still sell film and they still come in those plastic containers. Lomography has started making those little containers in metal. I bought a few for film but they would work for other things too without the plastic smell.

Blackie i considered that a food bag not a pantry to me the pantry is the herbs spices and oils not the main food stuffs!! my pantry is actually the small pot in a 3 piece pot set i keep that stuff in it and i can just sit it out when i make a meal and if i do need an extra pot for some reason it's there!

Hi Blackie, Those look very viable as waterproofing goes, but what about volume? It looks like they take up about 2-3 times the volume of their contents, as shown. These days, here in our kitchen, we tend to use twin-zip Zip-loc bags for similar circumstances. We press out as much excess air as possible then seal the twin-zip seals. This forms an air-tight seal, not only water-tight. The result is a package of roughly the same volume as the contents. If one packs carefully these will keep pretty well in the rough-and-tumble of putting in and taking out of the pack. Sometimes we put 3-4 small packets inside a larger Zip-loc bag just to be safe. It works particularly well with things like trail mix (traditional GORP), and they sit very easily in one's pockets when moving around. Incidentally, the larger bags are just great for storing/packing tinder and some kindling for that important "first-fire" under adverse conditions. Thereafter one dries replacements next to the "first-fire" for the following fire, so one always has some available. [The Boer trekkers in South Africa used a similar system, but obviously using more primitive waterproofing methods, like leather etc. Together with their tonteldoos (tinder box) they therefore always had means for making fires in the field (veld). ] Small Zip-locs are also ideal for storing your Bic lighter, as, apparently, they are extremely prone to falling into rivers and streams (according to the experts). I suppose I must be a freak, as this has NEVER happened to me! Just thought I'd share some thoughts about your topic. Cheers mate!
