Everyone pays rates and tax. That’s a common misconception. Every plot on every site you see pays rates and tax. Therefore the local councils would be better off building proper sites and providing the proper facilities for them. Better for the community, better for them, better for the coffers. Areas local to traveller sites nearly all enjoy lower crime rates than other places in the UK. That’s a fact, surprisingly enough.

My experience with travellers: 1. 3 years ago they smashed the fence to private land (green field) at opposite side of the street, parked there 11 caravans, doing parties till early hours in the morning (involving alcohol, teenagers and even littlem kids). Council managed to get ride of them after about 3 weeks, they left majority of that area covered in all sort of rubbish (dirrty nappies, broken glass, cans, food waste). 2. Few months ago 3 caravans parked at car park belonging to local train station just behind my child's nursery, when I was walking through car park I was attacked by 2 aggressive dogs "protecting" them. My feelings to travellers are obvious.

Irish travellers are genetically distinct from the settled Irish. They are in fact a protected indigenous minority, having diverged from the regular Irish population in the 1600s, so whether you like it or not, they are not just "tinkers". Which is just a socially accepted racist slur. Many theories suggest they were made homeless due to of one of the many atrocities committed against the Irish people by the English govt. The behaviour of these specific Travellers may be anti-social, but that is not an excuse to speak about all of them in such a derogatory way. FFS the homeowner said he'd be fine with traveller children dying in a burning house.... Innocent kids - over rubbish in his garden? Yet everyone is on his side? That's insane. If you were hated by everyone just because of your mere existence, you'd probably act the fool too. Besides, there are many, many thugs and criminals in the settled population, and they get away with it all of the time. Again, this lot are just dumping rubbish. Reality check, because you're clearly sheltered - there are FAR worse people out there. Bear in mind, less than 0.1% of the UK population are Irish Travellers - so you can't have that many issues with the, compared to the average population. Let face it, you're all just racist and finally have people to direct your hatred towards in a socially acceptable way. Also, how tf are travellers going to become contributing members of society when they are constantly discriminated against? And before anyone says anything, I already have several traveller settlements near where I live. I've only ever had 1 issue, and it was minor. Meanwhile, many people in my life have been robbed, attacked & beaten and more by 'settled' people. So who are the real criminals? And finally... culturally, these travellers are more English than they will ever be Irish, because I very much doubt they have ever stepped foot in Ireland.

A number of years ago now , a local garage not far from me had major problems with travellers invading their land . The garage was based down a country lane , with fields attached to it . The travellers had been asked to stay out of there fields which the garage had use of , but of course , they refused to listen ,& pretty much told the owner and his dad's to f&ck off . However the owners dad was a man who had gone through world wars , hard times of struggling to build a business , and numerous family problems to overcome . He strolled back into his house , came back out a short while later armed with an old shotgun that he legally held , and blew the ariel and other bits off the roof of the main culprits caravan . The result was , the travellers , who had illegally invaded his land , called the police . They turned up very quickly , and said to the garage owners dad , this is a serious allegation ..To which he replied , I'm an old man who hasn't got time for playing . If I get put in prison I won't last long , so what would you have done . I believe at that point the police cautioned him , took away the old shotgun . And left it at that .the travellers never returned to the field . Sadly , the garage has been closed down now , due to corrupt project known as HS2. And much off the area , inc lovely field and farmlands , have been swallowed up by this carbuncle in the UK countryside, But it took billions and billions off pounds of investment , and lots of corrupt politicians to finally take over the garage . Certainly not some parasite in a caravan , who had no respect for a hard working man who fought for his country .

I’ve lived in the area all my life. There are 2 camps 1 illegal & one legal provided by the council. The legal one i’ve never heard anyone say a word about. The ilegal one has got progressively worse over the last 30-40yrs. What have i seen with my own eyes? Kids used for any type of crime mainly theft. Animal abuse & rubbish dumped in the countryside, including human waste. Threats, intimidation & jus downright horrible behaviour in general. I’ve watched them go into restaurants & order & eat their meal. Then when the bill arrives claim they had nothing on it. Stealing industrial equipment from building sites. Conning old folks out of their savings, through various means for non existant gardening work. The only way to decribe them is an Irish Mafia. There’s good & bad in all communities, but as the travellers go these ain’t their best.

The trouble with "travelers" is they don't so much travel as settle and too often they they settle where it isn't allowed. Travelers try to have it both ways they want the freedom from responsibility of a free wheeling traveling lifestyle but also enjoy the benefits of a more settled lifestyle . They need to make their minds up because they can't have both.

its illegal to travel in England and yet to be classed as a gypsy or traveller in the UK you have to spend some of the year travelling,it seems its the law thats trying to have it both ways,human rights for ALL of us mean we have a right to water,healthcare and education, gypsies aren't asking for anything different from what you have,you have a right to live in a home as your ethnic heritage as part of the settled community,they have a right to live in caravans as their ethnic heritage,its as simple as that.

When i lived in Derby in the late 90s, travellers set up camp in a disused petrol station. I used to have tk walk past it lost days for my commute to and from work. Crime increased in the area. (I was in a relationship with a special constable at the time and he was aware of their shenanigans. They stole a care and dumped itnon the pavement. They entered out garden and stole one of his motobikes. One was a Ducati that was cery wrll secured but they managed to rake the other one. All this occured while we were in the home watching tv. We both went outside for a ciggy and noticed his bike was gone. He knew the areas to look. We took a walk and found his bike dumped in a a secluded are off road. Travellers stuck together therebis no reasoning with them. They caused havoc locally. Funny how things settled down when they left the area. The state they left that disused garage was disgusting. Dirty nappies strewn, gas cylinders (not sure if they were full or not) bags of rubbish and damage done to th3 fencing. Dirty filthy scum. I was glad when the effed off and i k ow may of the locals were too. They lived worse than pigs so why do theu expect respect to live like that and make decent people's lives a misery. Funny how less crime occured and there were less car frome and garden break ins when the scum effed off. Good riddance to the theiving gits. Another example of travellers' disgusting behaviour is when i worked at at a product supplier company not long ago. I won't name the company or product. The wiole street was full of travellers and on multiple occasions drovers were threstened with physical abuse and were swore at. Due to keeping the drivers safez this particular road was banned from having any of the company's product delivered. Some residents phoned and complained. Some were actually apologetic and were diagusted by those who abused the drivers. Them others called and were also verybabusive over the phone. Travellers who are ok are affected by those who are violent gobby idiots. That's why I am not keen on travellers. I experienced a pattern of behaviour and I do not like them. Their own fault. They are abusive and defensive.

Clearly, Kathleen, AND her lovely wig, is in no mood to compromise, or admit that there are problems, primarily caused by the traveller site. Len is just one man, fighting against a thousand strong traveller community. So of course Len is going to be extremely defensive. But as far as the travellers are concerned, THEY are the newcomers, encroaching on an established, cohesive community, some of them living there illegally. So of course the locals feel justified in their criticism. Not least because of the extra pressure on the local infrastructure, sewerage etc, that had still not been addressed. So it is clear that the measures in place to deal with the sewerage, amount of people on the traveller site is not adequate. If they need another septic tank then the travellers need to address it, or have the current septic tank emptied more often, to prevent the problems of sewage overflowing onto the land, because that is disgusting and uncivilised, and it is no wonder that the locals are so peed off about it, as it IS a preventable problem. Add to that the attitude of the travellers towards THEIR waste, junk, and rubbish blighting the area, that was probably unaffected before the travellers arrived. It just shows a distinct lack of consideration towards the local community. It is a similar story wherever travellers settle. Add the increase in crime in areas where there are traveller settlements, and obviously, locals are going to point the finger, especially when a rise in criminal activity, coincides with the establishment of settlements. The unsocial noise,rubbish, sewerage, and criminality sways me in favour of the locals.

@hermanmunster3358 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely, because what will happen, is that they will consider that 'no man's land' to belong to nobody, and they will just fill it with their sh!te. What Len should do, is raise the height of his EXISTING boundary, with an electric fence, topped with Razor wire, to a height of say, 20 feet, so they can't throw mattresses and old kids bikes over the top. Of course, he will need to place warning signs on THEIR side, so they know it's electrified. Then the travellers can build their own cordon, within THEIR site, to stop their little cherubs being frazzled to death, because that could be rather unsightly in itself.
@hermanmunster3358 Жыл бұрын
@@dyanstoutenburg9974 You're right, of course. But my concern would be that the travellers will see this 'no man's land' as a strip of land where they CAN just dump their crap, and because it is still within Len's boundary, he will still remain responsible for clearing it up. It's all well and good telling Len not to be "so fixated" on the issue, but when the mattresses, old sofas, and spent gas canisters begin to build up, then it is just compounding the already existing issue. I guess we will see how things work out in time. I hope they can live harmoniously, with mutual respect. But I fear this "ceasefire" will be short lived. The way that guy was driving slowly in his van next to the fence was meant to intimidate, even though Len was on his own land. So we shall see how long this 'Entante Cordiale' lasts I suppose.

As the last generation of Scot travelers, I can't even describe the peace of being settled for my children. I'm not saying I'm not proud of those who came before me, but that life was hell as a kid. The saddest part, not one person could get past the stereotype and prejudice to help us break the cycle. We never stole from anyone ever. Just needed some peace and the freedom to stay put.

Problem (for you) is you are naturally associated with the legions of 'travellers' who are a massive problem wherever they go, the exception are not the rule, we all have to compromise, I am almost 60 and have never lived where and how I want to.

The problem is why the council don't use their powers to get rid of those who are in the area illegally. Why doesn't the council deal with the fly tipping issues and rubbish left and degradation caused!! If the law is not adequate then the law needs to be changed. Things need to be dealt with legally.

Why doesn't the colonel live there for a few months, or even better next door to them and see how he likes the value depreciation of his property. The dumping of human waste. The theft and anti social behaviour. Kathleen will never admit any faults. She thunks they are perfect, unfortunately the majority of them are very far from perfect. Why arent these people in jail ???? And take stupid bob with them

With no respect for their neighbours or the law I understand the frustation. The gypsies I have met in my neighbourhood was harrassing my ten and twelve year old daughters. Thankfully they drove off in their massive RV's and mercedeses. The law must be upgraded to current problems. People need to feel safe in their own homes.

What a hoot if Colonel Bob returned home to whatever leafy lane he lives in to find twenty caravans bunging up his road with all the crap that goes with them.

I can understand both sides, however a few years ago I was desperately looking for a place to live, because I had two dogs I found it very difficult to find a place to rent that would accept my dogs. Every agents I applied with came back with no pets. It was a gypsy lady that let me rent a house of hers in the end with my two dogs. Yes she had family living on the land that the house was situated in caravans and mobile homes, but they really helped me and were very generous. I stayed with them for over a year and am thankful to them at the end of the day.

Last summer we had travellers right up against our fence in the field next to us, I went round and said hello, got invited in for a brew and had a good old chat for an hour theory being I'd rather be on side than against them, they were there for 4 weeks,couldnt be moved for a health issue, when they left they walked the field with bags and cleaned up all their shite,. Still felt a bit on edge but they were a decent mob of 9 caravans.

@littleowldme oh don't get me wrong, we have had our fair share of bad ones over the years but last lot and ones before them were in complete contrast to the norm, this year we have had no travellers on the field but it has been made more secure (it was already secure but they broke the locked gate).
