There has been a little commotion surrounding the relatively popular KZbin creator sponsor, Established Titles. People have started to think they might be a scam. My only problem is that it took people this long to figure it out!

I was wondering if anyone here would be old enough to remember that...except they weren't even promising you would own the star. They'd just write down in a document that it was named after you (or your sweetheart) and then file it with _the United States Copyright Office!_ Totally legitimate...they could copyright what they pleased, pretty much.

My problem is that we know people are dumb enough to fall for this cause they fall for those Indian gift card scams all the time. Pushing this on people feels akin to pushing people towards a scam artist who knows they're taking advantage of people. Everyone is in one the scam except the people being scammed. That's why laws exist to protect dumb people from intelligent fraudsters who would scam them out of money. This is no different from stealing from old people who don't understand you don't need to go out and buy gift cards for Microsoft.

@@MrHawksrule95 Apparently so. All the people that are upset are just outing themselves as being on the wrong side of the bell curve. I use Jeremy's code to get it as a last minute gag gift for my parents for Christmas. I literally told my wife I was doing it because they sponsor my favorite KZbin channels and it was a funny joke. With their Christmas sale last year, a discount code, and I printed out the certificates myself, I paid way less than $200. It was like 50 or 60 bucks or something, for two "titles". I've spent more time, money, and effort than that making D&D handouts for my players.

When I was little I was really into wolves; not like...sexually...I just thought they were cool-- and I hate that I just felt the need to clarify that. ANYWAY, I liked wolves, and for many years of birthday and Christmas presents, I would get a piece of paper with a picture of and information about a wolf that a family member had "adopted" on my behalf. Even in my r3tard3d 8 year-old brain, I never once thought that I had actually adopted said wolf, and could show up to whichever wildlife conservation that held it and say "hello, I've come to collect my son": even at that age, I had the understanding that it was simply a ploy to get people to donate to the wildlife conservative, and the "adoption" papers were a cute gimmick to give as a gift. So, the entire outrage around Established Titles is just so manufactured and performative: I refuse to believe that the average person is this dumb.

Just because some people are smart enough to realize it's a scam, doesn't mean there aren't a bunch of people dumb and/or old enough to fall for it. If you thought this was actually making you a laird you need to sue the school district you attended. The last point seemed substantial though - they seem to share AH's confusion regarding the word 'donate.' One might easily realize that the 'Laird' talk was puffery or novelty value only while still believing a portion of the proceeds was going to a good cause, rather than straight into a Hong Kong bank account.

I think the best comparison is when Penny Arcade did a Kickstarter a decade or more ago. Their lowest tier was "we'll shout your name while we chase a duck" - obviously it was their whimsical way of saying that you wouldn't get anything for your donation. That is until Kickstarter told them that they'd promised it, so they had to deliver on that promise - which is why there's a 2-hour video of one of them walking slowly after some confused ducks for 2hours reading pages and pages of random usernames. IMO, that's why people feel "scammed" about the titles, they always knew it was BS, however they expected the company to at least just do the token gesture effort of upholding their end of the BS/fun-silliness. The whole thing just comes off as just a step too cynical.

Nope. Does that mean my parents were scammed because the shirt promised them I’d be President when I clearly won’t be? Nope, because everyone recognized it was a joke. Of course, that does come down to how much Established Titles made it clear it was a gag and how much was them making it genuine. And the other thing is whether they made it look semi-genuine just to keep up appearances for the fun (like people pretending you’re an actual superhero or Jedi at a theme park) vs. maliciously trying to mislead people. Obfuscation to confuse people definitely is a genuine problem.

To be fair, the UK has a metric ton of weird archaic laws that are technically still on the books but overlooked or overruled in practice. The scam works because it's not out of the realm of possibility that owning a foot of land would entitle you to some completely meaningless title. And I suppose the other reason it works is people's misguided faith in official-looking forms and documents. Even if it were true that owning a foot of land made you a Scottish Laird, unless you live in Scotland you'd still be paying for a fancy piece of paper. You can call yourself a lord, with or without an official deed; people will just consider you a weirdo for it.

Adam Crigler was correct that the UK actually changed the law, to say that estates couldn't sell ACTUAL titles to square foot parcels of their land - one estate actually tried that, to try and stay afloat financially - and thus let people LEGALLY claim the title of Lord or Lady - but that they could sell SOUVENIR titles - ie, tourist novelty gifts - that didn't have any legal standing. And from what I've heard, it actually says on the ET website, that their certificate is a souvenir title, a novelty gift, and doesn't have any legal standing. It's not any different than walking into a Spencer's novelty gift store, and buying a spray can of "Professor Hale's BS Repellent", which was nothing more than a spray can of pressurized water.

The problem with this Established Titles BS is that everything up-front makes the paying sucke...err..."customer" believe that not only are they buying a bit of land in Scotland, but it allows them to be called, "Lord" or whatnot. You have to dig DEEP into the fine print to learn that, not only can you NOT call yourself a "Lord" as Scottish law specifically prohibits this when purchasing such small amounts of land (which you have to learn by cross-referencing actual Scottish law), but you're not even buying land in the first place. *You're spending $50 - $200+ for them to **_MAYBE_** plant a tree on a plot of land they allegedly own.* Oh, and for the piece of paper. From my understanding it's not a scam, there was a possible argument to make about being mislead, but none of the info was hidden, all available on website, plus the company has acted w the utmost integrity allowing contracts to be ended premature and for anyone uncomfortable to get refunds. Seems like a case where they were potentially defamed and everyone dog-piled. Scam/gag, like pledge and donating. Edit: was a legendary Rekieta rant.

yes, the KZbinr plagurised the hit piece from a blog, then name dropped a load of big KZbinrs to gain traction. They couldn't even "find evidence" about the trees, even though all that would have taken was a two second Google search for the charity lol.
