BLUE II has a canoe stern and will handle well in following heavy seas because waves can’t grab her. SKAT also means TAX in Danish I saw her many times in Copenhagen over several summers.

It doesn´t only mean "treasure", but also "tax" in Scandinavian languages. Kjell Inge the owner, fled the Norwegian tax authorities just a few years ago so in a sense, they paid for this boat (with what he saved per year in taxes).

Silly me, but I would be quite happy the Vanguard tender with the what, twin 150 hp or 250 hp Merc's. That would be great for an aging surfer to get out quickly to the reefs of Bali or the other islands, leave a member of the Balinese Crew on to watch and just toss the boards into the water and take a few. If it gets crowded, just weigh anchor and head to the next reef. That island has some pretty variant tides so it's shallow draft and space on deck would make it a perfect day coastal cruiser for the Salt Lifers.

I know the owners have plenty of money but they still worry about costs. 10 kts is slow but increasing the speed by 2 kts doubles the fuel consumption, another 2 kts and another x 2 in costs. A 50m yacht sailing at 12-13 kns uses approx 6000li per day, plus generators at 250-500li per day depending on load. Ultralow sulphur MGO is currently 62c/li, so $4000/day and owners dont want to spend nearly $8000 for the sake of 2 kts. A busy yacht might spend 180 days at sea which means an extra $1.4M/year.

My sweet spot is around 8 to 15 litres per hour - 6 to 8 knots - 49 to 67 foot loa. Preferably Gardner powered. I choke at triple digit fuel (even anything above 50 LPH) consumption, the cost is ridiculous over a decent voyage.

Not really as range is also limited by hull shape, stability and how much fuel you can physically carry. In addition if you go really slowly and with low consumption you get long range, but there isnt sufficient storage for food. Most yachts carry enough for 2-3 weeks, but if you're only doing 6-8 kts you dont get far. Fuel is generally 5,000 NM at cruising speed.

Skat and Norn are two of the coolest yachts on the water. I like to see unique ideas used in yacht construction. I think these two boats incorporate some very interesting ideas into their design. Glad to see Microsoft money go to good use.

Between the yachts today, I'd pick Blue II. I'd no doubt have the support vessel look more like Amadea and similar "sleek" yachts, and have the helicopter and modern things there. Also a swim platform stern 'just in case' I wanted to lounge and swim in turquoise waters. Even though I love the ice hull and the possibilities it allows for. Great Video, some of my favourite type of looking and explanations.

Love that Blue 2 boat. It looks so benign, especially compared to aggressive designs like Skat. I would definitely rename Skat, I wouldn't be able to look past the meaning of the word in English (with an alternate spelling). I would be tempted to rename it to "Schat" which means both treasure and darling in Dutch.

Not sure if this has been said already, but the word "skat" in danish and norwegian, as well as "skatt" in swedish literally means "treasure". In both danish and norwegian it's also used much like the word "love" is used in UK english when speaking to another person in a loving/warm manner.

Blue II is one of my favorite yachts. If you would have put that on your thumbnail photo, i would have clicked on this video a few days ago. The 2 styles of yachts I dislike the most are military looking and any yacht named after a James Bond Movie.

As a Danish guy, I would keep the name, BUT in reallity I would be on Blue II, and that nice oldstyle look. There is just something about it. The Hungarian Microsoft guy had an office in Copenhagen( København), that is how he found the Danish name.

Perhaps the older looking yacht is slow because it is a full displacement hull? If it is ice rated perhaps that would make sense to have a FDH for long range and stability in harsh weather. You've missed a beat here. Forget Skat, the original "Military looking" yacht was Izanami which then changed to Ronin and it is parked on the starboard side of Blue in your video. If you google profile images of Izanami you will see she was the first to opt for a grey colour and looks more military. The main reason people would say Skat looked military was her numbers "9906" on the hull, other than that she always looked to me like a showroom for a double glazing company with her upper deck windows.

Yachts was originally warships. Yacht is a Dutch word for hunter and was smaller and faster war ships that was designed to hunt pirates in the 17th century. They could carry around 10 to 16 guns.

Hi, not sure if all the parts of the story are completely correct, but that is the issue with seamen stories - half is a lie and the rest is doubtful. However, the SKAT used to be visiting Copenhagen frequently in the early years. At that time I was a mate on the DFDS Copenhagen - Oslo service and had a good friend in the Harbour Office. He told me that the Hungarian guy had left Hungary and arrived in Copenhagen, where he he was accepted at the Danish Technical University. During the time in Copenhagen he had a Danish girlfriend and the "nickname" in Danish for a loved one is "Skat" or Darling as it would be in English. That should according to my source be the reason for naming his yacht SKAT - in memory of her and maybe to show her, that she should have sticked with him 🙂. Adding to that and what only could be seen from the bridge, when you passed the vessel was that it was furnished with expensive Danish designer furniture. However, there is another twist to the name and that is SKAT is also the official name for the Danish Taxman (Skatt - in Norwegian) and the berth that the vessel always used in Copenhagen was right outside the Tax HQ. So it may be coincidental, but could also be a slight sign of payback from the time he was paying 65% in tax on a student salary.

Years ago we had a Russian Arms dealer vacationing here in Greece. His yacht was elegant however it was armed to the teeth. They had hid anti attack weaponry ingeniously hidden within its design. Now if you or I entered some other countries ports they would haul us into prison for keeping arms on board but are needed with todays issues. Old mariners had a tradition of not renaming a ship since it would bring bad luck to the ship. Very superstitious.
