I have been struggling with my Mexican students to get them to do their writings! I usually tell them to do those exercises for homework because I think that way they'll have more time but they don't seem to be committed at all. 😵 I wonder if, by telling them that no homework done means fewer points in their score , they will actually start practising..

Telling them it's for grades is one way. But when it comes to writing homework you need to make it easy and interesting, otherwise the majority won't do it. Get them to start with some easy writing about their lives. Perhaps include their family members or friends ~ for example, in stead of writing about their own hobbies, they should interview their parents. Hope this helps. Also, don't make it too long or difficult. Start with the homework in class and let them finish later.

As a Mexican myself, they probably aren’t committed because they don’t feel passionate or simply don’t find interest in that subject. And it’s not just us Mexicans (not sure why you brought that up) it could be anyone.

Such a great question Sayma! It's important to let your students know what you want them to focus on for each assignment. So if you focus on content and organization, let them know. Other things to look out for ar conventions (spelling, syntax, grammar), vocabulary, clarity, fluency and logical structure. If you want to practice something else, let them know.
