I've noticed that the heat from the processor and the USB controller mess with the temp sensor on the hat. I had to get a ribbon cable to put some distance with the heat I'm order to get some accurate temp readings.

Yeah typically temp sensors are kind of considered pointless on SBC's and MCU's unless you actually try to use it to determine the temp inside the case to turn on a fan or just monitor everything is running okay.

@@shorttimer874 I'm late to the show... The best solution I found if you want to keep it as one compact unit is getting the dual fan hat from52pi. The fan hat allows you to install a second hat on top of it. Helps keep the pi cool while also giving you accurate temperature data.

There is a hardware bug with the sense hat. The temperature sensor on the sense hat is directly above the R-Pi's CPU, thus it is reading the temp of the heated air from the CPU. Mind you, when the sense hat made, it was made for the R-Pi Model B+ and the Astro Pi project. The Model B+'s CPU does not heat up even if it is moderately over-clocked and the temperature sensor works fine with it. But using the Model 2B, 3B and 4, those CPUs run at a higher speed and generate heat because of it. Thus the sensor picks up that heat.

I have the sense hat too the best tip I can give you is use a cable on the gpio, because I found on my rp3 it was picking up heat from the cpu, but a bit of clearance and it works a treat.

The temp sensor might have been sensing the board temperature rather than ambient temp. Great videos btw im new to rpi and the content on your channel is great!
@Aerobat1191
@Aerobat1191 4 жыл бұрын
Damon, I agree. The temp sensor must be on the Sense Hat board which sits above the cpu. The Sense hat should be isolated away from the Pi4 board via a ribbon cable or it will always be influenced by the Pi4 component temperatures. Having said that, Barometric readings are usually compensated for temperature so the barometer will probably be inaccurate due to a non-ambient temperature compensation. Depending on how the humidity sensor operates, it might also read improperly due to non-ambient compensation. In short, the Sense hat has to be located somewhere that provides true ambient atmosphere of the environment you are trying to measure.

Dennis Logue A ribbon cable would solve the problem. But if you look at the sense hat board, they left openings for camera ribbons in the middle, and at the edge there's a notch for display ribbon cable. Clearly they want to make it mounted on top of raspi... Design failure I guess

I have the sense that for a while now and the issue with the temperature is that the sensor is too close to the CPU so you get the wrong temp for the CPU being hot. So FYI if you want accurate temperature readings, you'll have to use an external temp sensor.

I have the same issue, I wanted to use the sense hat to measure ambient temp and humidity in my home server room, would it help to distance the sense hat with a gpio ribbon cable, or will the temp sensors be affected by anything else on the sense hat card itself?

@williamedds1 2 жыл бұрын
@@zangetsu2k8 I think that would help out a lot. Alternatively, you could concern yourself with relative temp. Just put it in the server room and don't worry about what it says. Get a baseline and only if the temp goes above that baseline should you worry.

That, plus a suite of additional sensors to measure things like air quality/atmospheric composition, light levels, record sound and video, etc. I have wanted to create an affordable, open-source, broad spectrum life logging device like that for some time. With the Pi and Sense Hat, that dream is that much closer. I envision a wearable Pi setup with the sensors and a battery, giving the wearer real-time data on their immediate environment as well as the ability to catalog said data. Similarly, units could be deployed in various locations as a sort of hybrid weather/seismograph/radiation detection platform; publishing its output as metadata for people to use as early warning systems and such. The myriad possibilities that SBCs like the Raspberry Pi create are so exciting. We have only scratched the surface at this point.

The problem with all such RPI Hats is that it blocks regular airflow from/to CPU and memory. Also, these guys think that their hat is the only thing you need that's why they are not designing hats properly with pass-through connectors, so one will be able to stack multiple extension boards. These guys potentially use only I2C and SPI, maybe few regular pins for buttons input, and they leave you no options to use other RPI pins or I2C for another extensions, sensors, hats, etc.

I am wondering if they make a module for this (rather than a hat) ... It seems like a wireless module, which could be polled and programmed remotely would allow my Pi to do more things, and still function as a basic and open development platform (for coding and breadboarding, etc.) ... I do not need or want to dedicate my compute resources to a subordinate app and it would be great if a weather app could just store readings, in a table array, to be polled at my leisure.

@@userou-ig1ze There are various weather resistant/proof cases for the pi, making it ideally suited for using outside. Another use for this could be a wireless temperature sensor in another room, feeding into your smart thermostat and/or smart radiator valves. Or to control an air humidifier / dehumidifier. Perhaps even using the accelerometer as an earthquake detector, and the pressure sensor could detect height on a drone or balloon. Get creative or use ideas from other people, there are many things you can do with this.

is... "sudo" not pronounced the same as "pseudo" or "judo" or the "sudo" in "sudoku"? I recognize the clarity gains of disambiguating "sudo" from "sudu" are marginal and it creates a new collision with the actual word "pseudo", but that's how I've always read it. (I recognize that it's just a shortening of Super User DO, but if that had be shortened to SUD instead I'm certain we would say that the same as "suds" or "SCSI", so I don't think the component words should have much bearing in this case).

With the CPU/Pi temps changing base on usage and load, and the fluid dynamics of how that effects the temperature probe constantly changing depending if there's a breeze or not?
