Your first option isn't great depending on the situation and your second is terrible but there are other options. You tell them it's wrong and help them learn if you can, duh. Teach them how to learn and continue their education. Help them get out into the world and make friends. I tend to have less sympathy when you're an adult saying crazy/biggoted things. Especially if you're older and aren't actively being brainwashed or whatever lol. You've had enough time to figure out the basics, it's really not that hard. It's not like your brain shuts off and you're unable to have empathy anymore. We all are human beings, we're from the same model, we all have the capability to be better or worse. They can get themselves together and learn. Don't rule out incredibly important stuff because they have been on Earth for a bit longer... that's making an excuse so you feel better. If anything it makes it worse. Plenty of very old people are great and/or do the bare minimum every day. Some people are really hateful and if it comes to it you should prioritize your own health over someone who wants to hurt people and is unwilling to change for you/the greater good. Try your best and always push back on that stuff when you see it. They should get some time but you can't let crazy stuff like that slide. Being a child can take blame away, but not being old. Your brain is developed by that point. If you really can't get it then you're probably not worth being around... If you're actually a good human being then you prioritize human happiness and learning/changing when you're brought new information, especially when you see your choices are actively/directly hurting others. If someone as close as a family member comes to you and explains that what you did is hurtful/harmful to people/an entire type of person then you should want to listen. You shouldn't want to hurt your family like that for no good reason. If you don't then you don't really value that person and you don't value being a good healthy person, is that good family? Think if it's worth it to have in your life, if it's too harmful. Weight the pros and cons and see what you can do. At least once they have been told they don't have a real excuse anymore. They have to put in effort too. Often if one family member is like that there will the more than one with similar behavior. There's is a good chance you'll be attacked in some way by all of them no matter what you did or how slight it was and if others were involved. With a lot of passionate bigots they can be very aggressive with it to. If you ever think it could get as extreme as violence then prioritize safety first if you can. Don't let yourself be bullied for standing up and doing the right thing. Family is made up of people (that you probably didn't pick) and your relationship to them isn't magically above the normal important rules for those. You shouldn't let it cross healthy boundries. You can find a new found family if needed/you want to. That's often an option forced on people when that bigotry is turned on them, when they happen to be a minority they don't like. You're lucky if you're not in that scenario. You're not required to put up with stuff like that (or anything actually) or put your mental health in danger for anyone, even if they are family (biologically or otherwise) to you. Remember that. Some people might shame you no matter the situation but they truly don't get it and/or are working on their own (usually related or similar) problems, don't worry about them. Remember that if you aren't effected it's nice that you can let racism and horrible mentalities like that slide, but other people can't. Other people get the full impact of it, it may be an abstract idea to you that you can put to the side but to others it is a painful lived reality every day. It's nice that you might be able to brush it off but think of a friend in that group sitting in that scenario, it should be sickening. Maybe that can help you sympathize and think of the impact on an individual scale. It's a privilege to have the idea to ignore hateful things targeted twords groups of people when you aren't the one sitting there being targeted. Feeling that pain and the effects it has on your brain/health to even hear 'mildly' bigoted ideas about you/people like you is a lot. These people vote too, you know that? Letting it fester has wider consequences and they aren't good... Worried about ostracizing people if you have to leave them? They are doing it to themselves and others. It's a choice they actively make to hurt others and ostracize them based on inherent features they have/what category of person we put them into. You'd be choosing that bigotry over the people effected by it. It's the normal reaction to pull away and push back when you hear bigoted stuff if you aren't bigoted, they chose to get that reaction by making it known in a disgusting way that they think disgusting things about people in categories we made up. It's beyond silly. People doing that shouldn't be normalized and normalizing the idea of giving them excuses instead of teaching them is very harmful. If people weren't so cowardly (that's probably the issue most of the time here. People like to avoid conflict. They make silly nonsense excuses to feel better about themselves.) or cared a bit more we would live in a much better place. They should be able to learn and change and if they really can't then you should probably prioritize and leave. But your first ideas seem bizarre in the way you laid them out. You probably have some control over your immediate life/circle, you should take advantage of that and doing so leads to even bigger changes. We've seen what happens when people not affected are too afraid to tell their buddies or family to knock it off. Consider yourself lucky that you're the one correcting and defending instead of the one being directly targeted time and time again.That's life and you have to learn if you're going to be around people. And we are talking about bigotry here, if they can't do that with something that important or intense I'm sure they won't for less serious things. Anyone worth keeping will be able to respect you, respect others, learn, grow, and have conversations about it. They shouldn't be putting their bigotry out there if they don't want feedback and if they didn't want it to spread so they have chosen those consequences. Do what you can and keep yourself healthy.
